U of Hawaii commits funds to provide access for Native Hawaiians
University of Hawaii President Evan Dobelle said that he has committed $1.5 million to fund initiatives supporting access and academic excellence for Native Hawaiians at UH. Dobelle said the decision stemmed from the state Supreme Court ruling that invalidated a state law that calculated how much the state must pay the Office of Hawaiian Affairs in ceded-land revenues. He also announced the university will discuss with OHA and other organizations, such as Kamehameha Schools, how UH can best achieve its goal of creating an "environment of access'' for its Native Hawaiian students. Dobelle added that among the issues to be addressed as the university develops a five- to seven-year plan is the status of Native Hawaiian students, faculty and curriculum within the university system. "As the state's public system of higher education, our comprehensive mission is to serve all the citizens of Hawaii in their efforts to create a better life and secure future for their children,'' Dobelle said. "Our obligation grows with the diminishment of fortunes of any particular population within our community.'' (AP)

Founded in 1949, Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) is one of the premier independent college preparatory boarding and day schools in the Pacific Region, offering a full range of academic and extracurricular opportunities for more than 600 students in grades K-12. The school is located on two campuses in the heart of the world-famous Parker Ranch on the Big Island of Hawaii. The Upper Campus is located on about 120 acres at the foot of the Kohala Mountains. The Lower and Middle Schools are housed on a six-acre campus in the nearby town of Waimea, which recently was recognized as on eof the top 10 best places to live in the United States.
HPA offers a boarding option for students in grades 9-12, and draws its diverse student body from the Hawaiian Islands, 11 other states, American Samoa, Palau, the Marshall Islands, and 11 other countries.
Small classes are taught by a dedicated, highly professional faculty using the latest in educational technology. The school also has developed partnerships with its "high tech" neighbors such as the Mauna Loa Observatory, which allow students to participate in cutting edge projects that have received local, national, and international acclaim. The challenging academic curriculum is complemented by strong programs in the visual and performing arts, as well as a comprehensive athletic program that stresses participation and sportsmanship.
Summer Session offers new and prospective HPA students an excellent introduction to the school's program and instructors. Many students return every summer to take advantage of the outstanding program and staff, and to meet students from around the world. The 2003 Summer Session will run from June 25, 2003-July 25, 2003.

RESUME'

I was born in Rosebush, West Germany. It was a very little town, with a population of around 50. I stayed there until I was 4, then my mother took me to America. As a child in America, I spent most of my time in private boarding schools. The remaining time I lived with my mother in New York City.
When I was 12 years of age, my mother took me back to Germany to meet my father for the very first time. He didn't speak English and I didn't speak German, but my mother had left me with him anyway, and she flew back to America.
I lived with my father maybe 6 months then he passed me on to my grandmother. I lived back and forth for a while, then I was placed back into boarding schools.
When I was only 14, I started looking for work to support myself. My first job was working in a laundry, then I moved to another job working for a hotel (I ended up living there too.) At this time, I began to pursue a modeling career. I soon became very successful as a model in Europe and was beginning to create an image for myself.
When I was 21 I moved back to America to further my career in modeling. Believe it or not, I had no idea I was a Marilyn Monroe look-a-like. Until my trip to the United States, I'd never even seen one Marilyn Monroe film let alone know who she was! I found that modeling in the United States was a lot harder than in Europe. I was often told that most of my photos were, "too Marilyn Monroe." I still didn't see this similarity. I'd always seen myself as myself.

Schools for the Gifted
The question is often asked, Are there special schools for gifted children? For highly gifted children? But there are few answers. This list attempts to be an answer, but comes with many caveats. First and foremost, schools are listed here by either their own or parent recommendations - this listing is in no way a recommendation for any specific school for a specific student. Some of these schools are public, some are private. Some test very strictly for gifted or highly gifted students; others are very specialized in their academics, and therefore draw such students without testing explicitly for the gifted. That said, at least this list is a beginning, a list of a few schools where at least some of our children can find a stimulating education, among other children like themselves. Also see our list of Early Entrance College Programs , programs specifically designed for the younger student ready for college level course work. And, don't miss this list of U.S. schools that specialize in LD students, often working well with gifted / LD students... LD Resources K-12 Schools with LD Programs, USA

55. Milton Hershey School Spending Per Student

Hershey sets gold standard At $96,000 a student, it eclipses spending at similar schools By Ford Turner
For The Patriot-News At the heart of the controversy over selling Hershey Foods Corp. has been one simple question: Will the school founded by chocolate magnate Milton S. Hershey have enough money to educate kids? But even in the rarefied world of private boarding schools, Milton Hershey School has used its $5.4 billion trust to climb to the top of the financial mountain. The institution spends more than $96,000 a year on each student, twice what the nation's most elite prep schools and far more than other private schools for disadvantaged children spend. When they embarked on their recent $228 million building program, Milton Hershey officials paid for the mammoth project using money from a rainy day fund. Yet the price tag surpassed the amount of money raised by a Massachusetts prep school billed as "the largest fund-raising campaign in independent school history." That campaign netted $209 million in donations for Phillips "Andover" Academy, a school whose 17,000 high-powered alumni and friends include President George W. Bush and his father. Hershey Trust managers say they must safeguard the future of Milton Hershey School by selling their controlling interest in Hershey Foods and diversifying their assets. Hershey stock makes up about half of the trust's assets, and managers argue that a downturn in the stock could affect their ability to fund the school.

can be. "Subject Trees" maintained at several sites can help, but
my recent experience with these collections of gopher "pointers" has
