The Hawaii Poison Center has served Hawaii residents as a valuable, and oftentimes life-saving, health resource. Its mission is to serve as the state's central facility to aid with the management of individuals who have been poisoned, to institute poison prevention measures, to provide treatment recommendations to health professionals, and to educate the public about the effects of poisons and poison prevention. A comprehensive poison reference software system lists and identifies over 1 million toxic and non-toxic substances, allowing Center personnel to quickly and accurately assess and recommend treatment. The Poison Center Hotline receives over 12,000 calls from the general public and medical professionals each year. For more information, please call us. Free Hotline: 941-4411

he University of Hawaii Surgical Residency Program seeks to prepare residents to become surgeons of the highest caliber. This program strives to accomplish this by providing each resident with a rich educational experience in a variety of clinical settings. The three main program components - curriculum, research, and service - are structured to enable the resident to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and clinical judgment needed for the practice of general surgery. The many graduates of the program that have become successful surgeons locally and in mainland communities benefited greatly from the wealth of teaching expertise and clinical experience afforded by their residency training in Hawaii. Program Organization
The University of Hawaii Surgical Residency Program (the Program) is an approved five-year general surgery training program. The Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The design of the Program provides accommodation for those planning on subspecialization after one or two years of general surgery. Acceptance at the first year level is made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Eleven positions are available at this level. Eight are preliminary (P-18) and three are categorical (C-19). NRMP identification numbers are 299618 and 299619 respectively. The Program operates in a community hospital system in which patients are admitted and treated by private surgical attending physicians. The program director is responsible for program management, and delegates educational and administrative responsibilities to the Director of Surgical Education (DSE) at each participating hospital.

Hawaii State Government Home Page Who are Missing Children?
    • "Missing Children" are those who for whatever reason are not in their usual abode and whose parents or caretakers are unaware of the whereabouts. They include children who:
      • are abducted by a stranger or acquaintance
      • are abducted by a parent or relative due to custody disputes
      • run away
      • become lost
      • have been discarded by their lawful custodian or parent
While the majority of children who become "missing" are eventually recovered or return home, they may be gone for significant periods of time. Some children are found dead, and some are never recovered at all. Coordination and cooperation between law enforcement, the missing children's clearinghouse, and all involved agencies can shorten the time a child is away from his/her proper custodian or family, thereby lessening chances of exposure to dangerous situations.

U.S. Military Consumer Services Programs U.S. Military Family Centers Family Centers, located on most military installations, provide information, life skills education, and support services to military members and their families. One of the primary functions of the Family Center is to like customers with appropriate services available in the local community or through state and federal assistance programs. In this role, the Family Center director develops working parterships with organizations such as local health and human services, churches, school systems, employment assistance, law enforcement, recreation, and other service providers.
"Family Centers" is a generic term that includes all Military Departments. Each Service refers to the "Family Center" by a different name. If you cannot locate a Family Center, please contact your respective military branch's headquarters office listed below. The designation "DSN" preceeding some of the phone numbers, refers to the military phone system and does not apply to the civilian sector.
Access to a directory of Family Centers by Service and by State is available through the Military Family Resource Center (MFRC) web site at http://mfrc.calib.com

Contact: Michael Kharfen, (202) 401-9215 Y2K READINESS OF STATE CHILDREN AND FAMILY PROGRAMS The five programs are operated directly by the states with oversight from ACF. State computers are used to determine the eligibility of beneficiaries and the disbursement of payments. In addition to supporting the administration and oversight of these programs, computers help make sure that eligible beneficiaries get the services they need and pay providers of these services such as foster care and child care. State computers are used to identify and locate delinquent non-custodial parents and collect child support payments. The five programs, operated by the States and territories, receive over $30 billion in federal funds to promote the economic and social well-being of families, children, individuals, and communities. ACF has conducted on-site assessments in fifty-five jurisdictions to evaluate the Y2K compliance of the operations of the five high impact programs. ACF visited the 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and the Virgin Islands to assess information systems. As of mid-November 1999, 26 jurisdictions are at low risk for possible problems in all five program areas, 23 are at medium risk in one or more areas, while 6 jurisdictions are currently at high risk in one or more programs. ACF continues to work with states to assume readiness.
