Goal One states that "By the year 2000, all children in America will start school ready to learn." One of the objectives formulated to meet this goal asserts that "Children will receive the nutrition and health care needed to arrive at school with healthy minds and bodies." Problems which can affect children's later development and school readiness include lack of prenatal care, low birth weight, maternal substance abuse, malnutrition, vaccine-preventable diseases, sensory impairments, high blood lead levels, and anemia. Efforts to promote children's health and nutrition, and to prevent children's illness, include federal and state programs, and initiatives to serve preschool children in health care settings, in preschool programs, and in community settings. These efforts address prenatal care, health and nutrition of the developing child, parent education, preschool teacher education, and health and nutrition instruction for preschool children.

The series is copublished by the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) in Mumbai and the East-West Center. The NFHS collected information from nearly 90,000 Indian women on a range of demographic and health topics. Conducted under the auspices of the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the survey provides national and state-level estimates of fertility, infant and child mortality, family planning practice, maternal and child health, and the utilization of services available to mothers and children. IIPS conducted the survey in cooperation with consulting organizations and 18 population research centers throughout India. The East-West Center and a U.S.-based consulting firm, Macro International, provided technical assistance, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) provided financial support. The Role of Home-Visitation Programs in Improving Health Outcomes for Children and Families (RE9734)
    AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS
Council on Child and Adolescent Health ABSTRACT. Traditional pediatric care is often based on the assumption that parents have the basic knowledge and resources to provide a nurturing, safe environment and to provide for the emotional, physical, developmental, and health care needs of their infants and young children. Unfortunately, many families have insufficient knowledge of parenting skills and an inadequate support system of friends, extended family, or professionals to help with these vital tasks. Home-visitation programs offer an effective mechanism to ensure ongoing parental education, social support, and linkage with public and private community services. This statement reviews the history and current research on home-visitation programs and provides recommendations about the pediatrician's role in supporting and using home visitation. HISTORY OF HOME-VISITATION PROGRAMS Home visitation for parents is a widespread early-intervention strategy in most industrialized nations other than the United States. In most countries, home health visiting is free, voluntary, not income-related, and embedded in comprehensive maternal and child health systems. Although a causative link has not been demonstrated conclusively, countries with extensive home visitor programs generally have lower infant mortality than does the United States. This is despite per capita health spending in the United States that far exceeds expenditures in other industrialized countries.
