Los Angeles Lakers Announce Read to Achieve Challenge Winners In setting up this competition, Bob Marciel, The Honolulu Advertiser Circulation Sales Manager says, "We decided to reward the class with the highest (number of minutes reading) average because we wanted this reading challenge to be a cooperative effort. Even though reading is an individual effort, in this case, the class needed a team effort to win the prize. This way every student was encouraged to read 110% more than they normally would have." "We have always thought of Hawaii as a second home, so we are happy to be a part of such a wonderful community program," said Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak. "The people of Hawaii have always supported us so well, so it is very gratifying for us to be able to give back to the Hawaiian community and support its children." To promote the reading challenge in Honolulu, the Los Angeles Lakers will also be distributing 10,000 Read to Achieve bookmarkers to schools. Read to Achieve is a year-round program that will reach millions of children. All 29 NBA teams will create state-of-the-art Reading and Learning Centers that will provide the community with reading libraries, literacy programs, educational workshops and access to on-line learning programs and the Internet. The program will include the annual donation of more than 200,000 books through a variety of reading events and book fairs, as well as the development of essay contests and on-line programs. The NBA will also form national and local All-Star Reading Teams comprised of members of the NBA family to promote reading efforts through in-arena events, Public Service Announcements, and community appearances throughout the year. Hawaii State Government Home Page Who are Missing Children?
  • "Missing Children" are those who for whatever reason are not in their usual abode and whose parents or caretakers are unaware of the whereabouts. They include children who:
    • are abducted by a stranger or acquaintance
    • are abducted by a parent or relative due to custody disputes
    • run away
    • become lost
    • have been discarded by their lawful custodian or parent
While the majority of children who become "missing" are eventually recovered or return home, they may be gone for significant periods of time. Some children are found dead, and some are never recovered at all. Coordination and cooperation between law enforcement, the missing children's clearinghouse, and all involved agencies can shorten the time a child is away from his/her proper custodian or family, thereby lessening chances of exposure to dangerous situations.

Grocery stores leave rotting fruits and vegetables in with the fresh items.

Many locals speak a version of English called Pidgin which is takes a while to get used to and understand.

    Catalogs
The original curators of the Hawaii War Records Depository created two alphabetical indexes for the catalog system. Both lists were typed on three by five inch index cards. The one list indexes the manuscript materials with cards for some newspaper entries. The other list indexes photographs. The manuscript catalog includes names as well as subjects. While some cross reference cards do exist, no master list exists. Organization of the material consisted of placing materials from a common source together, almost as if the staff of HWRD were creating an archival catalog following the principle of provenance. It is not archival, however, in that the grouping of materials is not exclusively on the basis of the creation of the materials but also on the basis of the collection of the materials. Thus, for example, the different series of military orders are found in the files of the Chamber of Commerce and its committees which collected the military orders; they are not found under Army. A further weakness in the organization occurs in that not all the "headings" are organizations; some are concepts.
