March 1999
Pediatric Migraine
How to detect and treat this "hidden" disorder IRENE WORTHINGTON, B.Sc.(Pharm.) About 200,000 to 300,000 children in Canada, some as young as 12 months of age, suffer from migraine. The presence of migraine is often not recognized in children; in fact, a surprising number of physicians do not know that migraine can occur in children. Although Canadian guidelines have recently been published for the management of migraine in adults, there are no Canadian guidelines for managing pediatric patients, and few clinical trials dealing with the treatment of pediatric migraine. (Guidelines for the treatment of migraine in pediatric and adolescent patients have been published recently by the Italian Society for the Study of Headache.) Internet sites for pediatric headaches Pediatric headaches are becoming a hot topic on most of the headache sites online. Most give parents some information on the different types of headaches as well as some treatment recommendations. National Headache Foundation: Headaches and Children

A migraine headache is a special kind of headache that can last for several days and cause intense pain. Migraines may be accompanied or preceded by other symptoms, such as nausea and visual disturbances. Some people start having migraine headaches as children. Others may not have them until later in life. The headaches may recur from time to time throughout life. The condition tends to run in families. It affects women three times more often than men. How does it occur? For years migraine headaches were thought to be caused when blood vessels in the head contract and then swell, producing pain. Recent research suggests that certain substances or events trigger an imbalance of brain chemicals (neurotransmitters). Common migraine triggers include: stress
fatigue
changes in the weather
certain foods
bright lights
loud noises
strong smells.

This Web site presents the author's view that caffeine withdrawal is the sole cause of not just some but all primary headache, including all migraine headache.

by Barry Spencer Welcome to Caffeine and Migraine
This website presents the author's view that caffeine withdrawal is the sole and indispensible cause of not just some but ALL primary headache including all migraine headache. The goal of the author is to perform or provoke a trial designed to determine whether primary headache can happen absent caffeine withdrawal. The author: crank ...or crackpot? You make the call!
The theory presented here may turn out to be wrong, but it readily explains several important symptoms and aspects of primary headache, and is not excluded by existing scientific evidence. How does this help you with YOUR headaches?
If all primary headache is caused by caffeine withdrawal, you should be able to eliminate your primary headaches by avoiding caffeine withdrawal. This can be done either by successfully abstaining from caffeine or by dosing yourself at regular intervals with caffeine in order to perpetually forestall the onset of withdrawal symptoms. Instructions and recommendations for treating migraine using these safe and inexpensive approaches are available on this website. http://www.nwinet.com/crysss/
INFORMATION ABOUT
the use of
PULSING ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD THERAPY
for prevention of Migraine Headaches What "pulsing electromagnetic field generators are and do:
Pulsing electromagnetic field (PEMF) generators of the type used for prevention of migraine headaches provide high frequency electromagnetic energy fields so powerful they can light a 40 Watt bulb, but pulse so quickly they do not heat the body very much. These devices are not similar to magnets or battery powered stimulators which are far less powerful and work on very different principles. The machines have been in use for over thirty years and are normally used to decrease swelling (usually for sprained ankles), speed wound healing, and to heal broken bones which will not knit on their own. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given them marketing labels for these purposes. They have been shown to be safe and without any known negative side effects. Diapulse generators (Diapulse INC. of New York) produce pulsed high-frequency, high peak power electromagnetic energy at a frequency of 27.12 MHZ in 65 microsecond bursts occurring in 600 pulse per second sequences at 975 peak watts. A typical pulsing electromagnetic field generator: How the treatment may work: When PEMFs are used to prevent migraine headaches, the device is pointed at the inner thighs. We think that the device works because it increases blood flow to the legs. This causes a known reflex which decreases blood flow in the brain's "central cerebral" arteries. Most people with simple migraine headaches have too much blood flow in these cerebral arteries. When the amount of blood flow is reduced to normal, migraines do not occur as often. Thus, the device probably works by decreasing blood flow in these brain arteries.

Question Posted By: BLHARRIS60 on Friday, December 28, 2001
Environment: My friend has attempted reconciling marriage as spouse does not want to continue. Not a bad atmosphere but not a marriage either, as it caused tension in her life. In addition, she had been trying to get a job for several months but can't get a foot in any door.
Symptoms: depression-like symptoms which included melancholy, not wanting to get motivated in the morning throughout the day and headaches (that started roughly 20 months ago when the marital problems began) between the eyes above the nose that caused her to go face down into the couch and sleep for 2-3 hours(by choice, because of the headache, she just couldn't do anything but sleep) anytime during the day. When she woke up from her nap, her headache would be almost gone but she was extremely disoriented, not knowing what time it was or sometimes even the day. Alot of times, a stressful moment happened prior to the headaches.
She went to her doctor, who prescribed 20 mgs. of Paxil per day, for her anxiety attacks/depressive state. The BOOMING headaches have stopped. She is a lot calmer now than prior to taking Paxil and more rational, too. However, my concerns are these:

A True Help for Migraine Headaches associated with Menstrual Cycles
Migraine Headaches Associated with the Menstrual Cycle usually Preceeding Menstruation Now, Time magazine has cited the landmark study of 17,000 girls aged 8. 15% of these girls are going through early puberty and sprouting breast buds and pubic hair. The Time magazine cover story, October 30, 2000, cites that some chemicals mimic estrogen and blames these chemicals for the early growth spurt of girls and early puberty. Ranchers also give estrogen to cattle and farmers give estrogen to chicken with the full knowledge that the estrogen will cause the animal to grow and mature faster. The chemical manufacturers and ranchers claim that the estrogen will wash out of the animals system in 3 days. However, estrogen is fat soluble and some scientists feel that it may take as long as a year for the synthetic estrogen to wash out of the animal's system. The European Union claims that giving estrogen to animals and then eating the meat may increase the breast cancer rate and refuses to buy Canadian and United States meat. Critics of the European Union say that this is merely protectionist. Or is it? Migraine headahes associated with the menstural cycle is also associated with Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS).

Question Posted By: Maurice Cuijpers on Monday, November 16, 1998
Hi, Since four weeks I have strange sensations in my head. Not really painful,
and it certainly feels other than headache. In the beginning of October I bumped my head near my temple to a sharp edge/corner of a cupboard.
The feelings started as a minor tingling feeling near my left temple and slowly increased to a pulsating (on my heart beat) sensation. Since a week or two I feel a constant pressure mainly on the left temple, but also extending to other parts of my head. It doesn't feel like a headache. Right now I feel this sensation mirrored on the other side of my head and I feel someting on top of my head, also pressing. I do not have had any problems on the back of my head or neck. First I could get it away by pulling my fingers through my hair, but that seems not to work anymore, or certainly not as long as before.
