Occupational Therapy is the health and human service profession that focuses on human
occupation: it offers vital insight that can help people live more productively. The term
"occupation" often suggests the use of work or vocational activities as treatment, but in
fact human occupation includes a broader spectrum of daily life activities including self
care, work, and play/leisure. An occupational therapist uses a rich array of meaningful
daily activities of self-care, work, and play/leisure to adapt, maintain, or improve an individual's ability to achieve self-fulfillment. Occupational therapy practitioners study how people occupy their time at various ages and developmental stages of their lives. The occupational therapist considers the individual as a whole-the integration of mind, body and spirit. Occupational therapy focuses on the achievement of complete physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being through engagement in motivationally meaningful and personally relevant activity or occupation.

Myotherapy
What Is It?
Myotherapy ("myo" is from the Latin for muscle) is a specialized form of muscle massage and stretching that uses deep manual pressure on specific spots on the body to release trigger points. Knots of tension, trigger points usually occur within a taut band of skeletal muscle or in the muscle's fascia (connective tissue). Because they are painful upon compression, they can "trigger," or cause, pain in other parts of the body. Myotherapy aims to relax these muscle knots and quickly relieve muscle-related pain. Myotherapy grew out of myofascial trigger point therapy, which was pioneered in the early 1940s by Janet Travell, M.D., the White House physician to John F. Kennedy, and Dr. David G. Simons. Dr. Travell's therapy (which she used to treat Kennedy's back pain) involved injecting saline and a local anaesthetic (procaine), directly into the painful trigger points. She would follow the injections with a series of gentle stretches and a coolant spray. In 1976, Bonnie Prudden, a leading authority on exercise and health, came upon what she later called myotherapy rather serendipitously. While assisting a Massachusetts doctor in preparing a patient for injection therapy, she unintentionally pressed too hard on one of the patient's trigger points. Almost immediately the patient felt much better. Prudden began to theorize that trigger points could be released simply by applying manual pressure. She was soon on the phone to her friend Travell, who encouraged her to experiment further with her theory. Prudden's efforts were met with great success as many patients reported dramatic improvements in a shorter time than with the invasive injections.

How is training a service dog different than training any other dog? Why can't any dog trainer train a service dog?
One difference between training a service dog and any other dog is the consideration required for the dog's handler. Trainers who are great at teaching dogs may need to further develop their people-oriented skills. This need becomes even more pronounced when the people they are serving have varying requirements associated with varying abilities. Few dog trainers are familiar with the wide variety of disabilities and how those disabilities impact a person's activities of daily living. Most dog trainers are also unfamiliar with the legal aspects of service dogs. It is important to give the handler of the service dog the skills to fully benefit from the dog, and this is mostly people training, not dog training. Beyond disability-related knowledge and skills, many dog trainers are unfamiliar with the best methods to train dogs to perform specific tasks. SDES will teach trainers specific steps involved with training assistance-type tasks.

"How many pharmacists are members?" queried one of the students. About 120 (0.4 percent) of a total membership of 30,000 was the response. Following the seminar, the questioner wondered aloud why so few pharmacists belonged. "Well," said another student, "There aren’t any public health pharmacists are there?" Of course the student was right; there is no group of persons known as public health pharmacists as there are public health physicians and public health nurses, who with PhDs form the bulk of membership in the APHA. Nevertheless, there may be pharmacists engaged in public health activities who, for one reason or another, have not joined the APHA, or who perhaps do not recognize they are doing public health. Moreover, it may be reasonable to shrug one’s shoulders and say. "So what? Who needs public health pharmacists anyway?" It will be argued here that some, but not nearly enough, pharmacists are now engaged in public health activities. Furthermore, both the public and the profession of pharmacy benefit from public health pharmacists, but pharmacy education has failed to recognize the potential for pharmacists in public health as well as to acquaint pharmacy students and practitioners with role models in public health.

Career Awareness: A New Fundamental for Elementary Education The value of teaching career awareness at the high school and middle school levels has long been known. Now, many school districts are beginning to realize the value of incorporating it into elementary curriculums as well. But with teachers' time already stretched to the limit, how can they possibly teach career awareness without sacrificing time spent on basic subjects? The answer: Incorporate a Career Trek kit into the curriculum. Career Trek is a multimedia career awareness program for grades four through six. It provides 190 occupation cards and 60 classroom activities that can be adapted to various teaching situations. The kit also comes with software that allows students to tour a 'neighborhood' and visit people in various occupations, or to solve 'Case Book' problems. Through their explorations of the cards and software, students not only learn about a multitude of occupations, they also learn self-awareness, problem solving, and listening and comprehension skills. Phyllis Nichols, who's been an elementary school counselor the past 14 years, has used Career Trek since its first version was introduced in 1992. OTA 101 - Fundamentals of Activity/Therapeutic Media - Through experimental learning, students will explore and develop skills in performing processes required in minor crafts, gross motor activities, games and simple work tasks. Emphasis is on activity analysis and adaption from the perspective of work and play/leisure tasks throughout the life span. Safety in the use of therapeutic activities is emphasized. A file will be created for each therapeutic media studied. Students will learn to teach techniques in applying therapeutic media to a group. OTA 110 - Interpersonal Relations in Occupational Therapy - Individual and group interactions related to occupational therapy intervention are examined. Theories of practice that explain interpersonal behavior from an occupational therapy perspective and psychiatric conditions treated by the occupational therapy assistant are reviewed. The therapeutic use of self and collaboration with the registered occupational therapist and other health care professionals with an emphasis on team work is investigated. Interviewing, observation, communication, and group process skills with an emphasis on cultural differences are simulated and observed in clinic settings. Group roles and stages are examined. Parish Nurse Barbara Parker A Parish Nurse has been engaged to provide church members with health education, health and spiritual counseling, and medical resources. Barbara Parker, who lives in Jacksboro with her husband (a minister at a Baptist church there), has assumed a half-time position as parish nurse at First Presbyterian. She is a registered nurse. Over the past 28 years, she has been employed by Superior Home Health, First American Home Health, Procare Home Health, Healthfirst, Alzheimer Support Group and Fort Sanders Regional Hospital. She is currently receiving training in providing grief and emotional counseling. "Barbara will focus initially on visiting our members in the hospital, answering medical questions, referring members to health professionals and other health resources, and providing emotional and spiritual support and health education," said Jim Wessel, head of the Caring Committee. This committee worked with the Methodist Medical Wellness Center to find a suitable parish nurse candidate. Parish nursing is an established occupation that has been successfully demonstrated in East Tennessee and other areas of the United States. Parish nurses may teach exercise, sex education, parenting, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and fall and accident prevention classes. Others may provide flu shots, blood pressure checks, and health and spiritual counseling.

Two week-long sessions are provided for children in specific age groups. Daily activities include games, music, sports, field trips and more. Hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, at Berta Weathersbee Elementary School on Forest Avenue in LaGrange. Fees are $75.00 per week, per child, which includes the direct costs of field trips. Registration is conducted during the month of May. Summer Playground Program (Ages 6 - 12)
This program is conducted throughout Troup County during the months of June and July. Locations include Calumet, Easy Street, Lindsey Street and West Side Parks; Long Cane, West Point and Hogansville Elementary Schools; William Griggs Recreation Center; Whitesville Road Housing Authority; Lucy Morgan and Benjamin Harvey Hill Homes; and Boys and Girls Clubs in LaGrange and West Point. Hours of operation are 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Participation is free of charge, and a sack lunch is provided to all children ages 18 and younger. Registration is conducted during the first week of the program at each site.

During the Soviet occupation, we were distributing anti-Soviet and anti-puppets leaflets, staging demonstrations and strikes in schools and universities, instigating the women to contribute in resistance war in any possible way despite the opposition from the fundamentalists, running schools, a hospital etc. for refugees, publishing and distributing "Payam-e-Zan" (Women's Message) and so on. After the fall of the puppet government and the invasion of the fundamentalists bands into Kabul, RAWA focused more and more on women's rights, human rights and exposition of the fundamentalists barbaric actions. Our activities: 1) In Pakistan: Due to RAWA's principled anti-fundamentalist stand, our social work amongst refugee Afghan women is an uphill struggle. Despite numerous difficulties we have regular contact with women in different camps of Pakistan. We happily note that the fundamentalists' endeavors in this regard have been vastly counter-productive as a great number of women from refugee camps in Quetta and Peshawar approach us for comfort, aid and support. However, the aid and support we can give them are mostly moral, as facing grave financial problems, little material help can be provided to them.

What is Occupational Therapy, anyway?
Occupational therapy is a health and rehabilitation profession. Its practitioners provide services to individuals of all ages who have physical, developmental, emotional, and social deficits and who, because of these conditions, need specialized assistance in learning skills to enable them to lead independent, productive, and satisfying lives. When a patient is referred for treatment, the occupational therapist assesses that individual's ability to carry out necessary developmental, physical, social and emotional functions in relation to his or her prognosis. The assessment and an analysis of the individual's personal goals and the demands of his or her environment are reviewed and become the basis of an individualized treatment program. During the course of treatment, the occupational therapist frequently reassesses the patient's status and coordinates the occupational therapy program with that of the other members of the health care team. In addition, treatment objectives are identified and coordinated with the patient, family members, and appropriate community resources to assure maximum independence, productivity and satisfaction. Occupational therapists are health professionals who use occupation, meaning activities with specific goals, in helping people of all ages prevent, lessen, or overcome disabilities. The activities may be as basic as bathing, dressing, or as complex as operating a computer with modified control switches. Today's occupational therapists are working in clinical practice, administration, education, research, private practice, and many other areas.
