  • Heat wave: Prolonged period of excessive heat and humidity. The National Weather Service steps up its procedures to alert the public during these periods of excessive heat and humidity.
  • Heat index: A number in degrees Fahrenheit (F) that tells how hot it really feels when relative humidity is added to the actual air temperature. Exposure to full sunshine can increase the heat index by 15 degrees F.
  • Heat cramps: Heat cramps are muscular pains and spasms due to heavy exertion. Although heat cramps are the least severe, they are an early signal that the body is having trouble with the heat.
  • Heat exhaustion: Heat exhaustion typically occurs when people exercise heavily or work in a hot, humid place where body fluids are lost through heavy sweating. Blood flow to the skin increases, causing blood flow to decrease to the vital organs. This results in a form of mild shock. If not treated, the victim may suffer heat stroke.

A National Problem Heat kills by taxing the human body beyond its abilities. In a normal year, about 175 Americans succumb to the demands of summer heat. Among the large continental family of natural hazards, only the cold of winter not lightning, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, or earthquakes takes a greater toll. In the 40-year period from 1936 through 1975, nearly 20,000 people were killed in the United States by the effects of heat and solar radiation. In the disastrous heat wave of 1980, more than 1,250 people died. And those are the direct causalities. No one can know how many more deaths are advanced by heat wave weather how many diseased or aging hearts surrender, that under better conditions would have continued functioning. North American summers are hot; most summers see heat waves in one section or another of the United States. East of the Rockies, they tend to combine both high temperatures and high humidity although some of the worst have been catastrophically dry.
NOAA's National Weather Service Heat Index Program
Considering this tragic death toll, the National Weather Service has stepped up its efforts to alert more effectively the general public and appropriate authorities to the hazards of heat waves those prolonged excessive heat/humidity episodes.

ARE YOU READY FOR KILLER HEAT WAVES?
Did you know that heat waves are a major weather killer during Wisconsin's summers? Did you know that the combined effects of high temperatures and high relative humidities in Wisconsin can be worse than those experienced in some of the Southern States around the Gulf of Mexico? Did you know that 150 people died in Wisconsin due to the effects of two heat waves that occurred during the hot summer of 1995? Did you know that the National Weather Service provides the public "heads up" information on heat waves in the form of watches, advisories, or warnings? Here s a brief rundown on terminology used by the NWS meteorologists to define and forecast heat wave conditions in Wisconsin....... HEAT INDEX ... An arbitrary number that reflects the combined effects of temperature and humidity on the human body. Although not strictly correct, the Heat Index (HI) can be thought of as an "apparent temperature" ....how warm it feels due to the heat and humidity.

What to Do During Extreme Heat

Why Talk About Extreme Heat?
Heat can kill by pushing the human body beyond its limits. Under normal conditions, the body's internal thermostat produces perspiration that evaporates and cools the body. However, in extreme heat and high humidity, evaporation is slowed and the body must work extra hard to maintain a normal temperature. Elderly people, young children, and those who are sick or overweight are more likely to become victims of extreme heat. Because men sweat more than women, they are more susceptible to heat illness because they become more quickly dehydrated. The duration of excessive heat plays an important role in how people are affected by a heat wave. Studies have shown that a significant rise in heat-related illnesses happens when excessive heat lasts more than two days. Spending at least two hours per day in air conditioning significantly cuts down on the number of heat-related illnesses. Studies have shown that a significant rise in heat-related illnesses happens when excessive heat lasts more than two days.

Blood flow to the skin increases, causing blood flow to decrease to the vital organs. This results in a form of mild shock. If not treated, the victim may suffer heat stroke.
