Heat Waves
This is a variation on Fire - 76 by Mahjqa. I highly recommend reading it and playing with it. Not only is it a fun technique, but it will help you understand the ground work that goes into Heat Waves. Thank you, Mahlqa. This is about simulating heat wave distortion. Sounds like fun, doesn't it? Heat wave distortion is the waviness you see just over the top of a hot object, like a car engine that has been running for hours on a hot summer day. The hot air rises and causes the light to be distorted as it passes through. The lower air pressure in the hot air has an index of refraction (IOR). Hence, photons get moved around while passing through. Unfortunately, I don't know what the IOR is for various conditions. Fortunately, this can be faked anyways with Mahlqa fire technique to build an animated D-Map. I think I'm getting goose bumps.

... Disaster Preparedness Know What These Terms Mean: Heat wave: Prolonged period of excessive heat and humidity. The National Weather Service steps up its procedures to alert the public during these periods of excessive heat and humidity. Heat index: A number in degrees Fahrenheit (F) that tells how hot it really feels when relative humidity is added to the actual air temperature. Exposure to full sunshine can increase the heat index by 15 degrees F. Heat cramps: Heat cramps are muscular pains and spasms due to heavy exertion. Although heat cramps are the least severe, they are an early signal that the body is having trouble with the heat. Heat exhaustion: Heat exhaustion typically occurs when people exercise heavily or work in a hot, humid place where body fluids are lost through heavy sweating. Blood flow to the skin increases, causing blood flow to decrease to the vital organs. This results in a form of mild shock. If not treated, the victim may suffer heat stroke. Heat stroke: Heat stroke is life-threatening. The victim's temperature control system, which produces sweating to cool the body, stops working. The body temperature can rise so high that brain damage and death may result if the body is not cooled quickly.

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE - "Heat Waves"
A National Problem
Heat kills by taxing the human body beyond its abilities. In a normal year, about 175 Americans succumb to the demands of summer heat. Among the large continental family of natural hazards, only the cold of winter not lightning, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, or earthquakes takes a greater toll. In the 40-year period from 1936 through 1975, nearly 20,000 people were killed in the United States by the effects of heat and solar radiation. In the disastrous heat wave of 1980, more than 1,250 people died. And those are the direct causalities. No one can know how many more deaths are advanced by heat wave weather how many diseased or aging hearts surrender, that under better conditions would have continued functioning. North American summers are hot; most summers see heat waves in one section or another of the United States. East of the Rockies, they tend to combine both high temperatures and high humidity although some of the worst have been catastrophically dry.
NOAA's National Weather Service Heat Index Program
Considering this tragic death toll, the National Weather Service has stepped up its efforts to alert more effectively the general public and appropriate authorities to the hazards of heat waves those prolonged excessive heat/humidity episodes.

Public Discussion Area SEARCH TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF USE In "Why Global Warming Would be Good for You," Thomas Gale Moore, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution (Stanford, California), said that "[s]ince the time of the industrial revolution, climate has basically been confined to a minor role in human affairs." In the Winter 1995 issue of The Public Interest , he wrote that "warmer is better," and that "a rise in world-wide temperatures will go virtually unnoticed by inhabitants of the industrial countries." After enduring this summer's heat waves, some inhabitants of the Northern Hemisphere's industrial countries might draw a different conclusion. Officials of the Cook County, Illinois, Medical Examiner office spent part of their summer handling corpses of those felled by the heat. As of early September 1995, nearly 600 deaths in the county (which includes Chicago) had been attributed at least in part to the 1995 summer heat waves. Even Chicago's legendary Great Fire of 1871 did not kill that many people. Cook County was not alone in experiencing a surge in heat-related fatalities. Elsewhere in the US and other industrial countries (especially France and Spain), many endured severe heat during the summer of 1995. While fatality rates in Chicago were particularly high, other cities also recorded unusually high numbers of deaths and illnesses from the heat.

Public Discussion Area SEARCH TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF USE
On 20 June 1995, the tabloid Weekly World News warned "Nostradamus Predicts Hottest Summer in History!" Referring to the US, the paper said it would "be like living in a blast furnace." Despite the dire warning, the summer of 1995 was not the nation's warmest summer ever. Ranking the last 101 summers by average temperature (with the warmest ranked 101 and the coldest, 1), summer 1995 in the US would fall in 69th place. But for the US and many other Northern hemisphere countries, the summer of 1995 nevertheless will be remembered for its intense heat waves. States from North Dakota to Maine experienced one of the hottest Junes on record. In mid-July a much publicized heat wave struck Midwestern, mid-Atlantic and New England states. While few temperature records fell, temperatures in many instances were the hottest in years and accompanied by extremely high humidity. This combination of heat and humidity pushed maximum daily effective temperatures into the 105-120° F (42-49° C) range over much of the eastern US. In Chicago alone, nearly 700 deaths were partially attributed to the summer's heat, and most were felled by July heat wave.

    Forecasting The Heat
While not as dramatic as other kinds of severe weather, extreme heat can be a life threatening condition. Because heat waves can often affect large numbers of people and wide geographical areas, special assistance is often needed. Factors that contribute to heat waves are just as complex as those that contribute to severe thunderstorms tornadoes or snowstorms . Like these phenomena, extreme heat is caused by different conditions in different parts of the country at different times of the year.
Forecasters often look for higher than average pressures in upper levels of the atmosphere. This often corresponds with a warm mass of air associated with an upper-level ridge ? where winds aloft flow in an anticyclonic (clockwise) direction When such a pattern becomes very pronounced, or "amplified," and continues for several days in the same general region, surface temperatures will likely rise to above average levels underneath the upper-level ridge.

Soaring temperatures and high humidity have killed more people in the last decade than other weather phenomenon, including destructive storms, according to National Weather Service data. One reason for the fatalities may be that prolonged periods of excessive heat have become more common.
Analyzing the temperatures from 172 U.S. weather stations over roughly the last 50 years, from 1948-1999, the study found a threefold increase in the number of heat waves across the country. A heat wave is defined as a four-day period when average temperatures are above the 85th percentile for summer temperatures in the area. That means the threshold for a heat wave in Seattle would be lower than the temperature level of a Louisiana heat wave.

Summer Heat Waves Can Cause Risk for Dehydration
Whether you are lounging poolside, playing tennis or simply watching T.V. at home, it is essential to consume plenty of fluids during summer heat waves. On average, an adult's body weight is made up of about 10 to 12 gallons of water (about 55 to 75 percent of body weight). An elderly person's body weight is only about half water. But, when exposed to extremely high temperatures, your body requires even more water to maintain its normal temperature. Extreme weakness and potential heatstroke may result if more than 10 percent of body weight is lost from dehydration or water loss. And the average adult loses about 2 1/2 quarts (about 10 cups) of water daily through perspiration, breathing and other body functions.
What are the signs of dehydration?
The effects of the body's loss of water are progressive: thirst, then fatigue, next weakness, followed by delirium and, finally, death. Though dehydration typically won't happen over the course of a single day, it is important to pay attention to signals of water loss and minimize risk of dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids throughout the daybefore thirst sets in.

What's to drink and how much?

Hot late July weather in each of these years caused high mortality. The 1915 heat wave was credited with 535 deaths from "heatstroke" as well as high general mortality for the summer. 1955 had the hottest July on record and accounted for a large number of deaths. In 1995, hot weather again claimed over 500 lives and was a contributing cause in more than 200 additional deaths. The 1995 deaths received dramatic media coverage because of the current requirement that deaths outside of hospitals be autopsied by the Cook County Medical Examiner. Below is a short exceprt from the Cook County Hospital Annual Report for 1916 p.15 showing the serious consequences of the weather that year:
Heat Prostrations Cared for Another test which strained the service of the institution to the utmost came during the extreme heat of last summer when our empoyes worked day and night almost without sleep trying to save the lives of over two hundred persons who were overcome by heat. The patients were not merely given a bath and put to bed. The had to be put in large bath tubs filled with ice water and rubbed for half an hour or more until their temperature were brought somewhere near normal. When they were broutht into the hospital their tempertures could not be registered, for they were highter thatn the thermometer would record, 110 depgrees. The clothes of practically all these pattients had to be destroyed. The employes had to work in obnoxious odors with the patients delirious and having convulsions, and it is surprising that they themselves were not overcome with heat while working so hard."

    Interpretive Summary:
Hot weather can markedly reduce growth and efficiency of feedlot cattle. When hot weather persists for several days (often referred to as a heat wave), death losses sometimes occur. Ambient conditions which adversely affect the animals can be profiled by evaluating past heat waves. Using that approach, characteristics were developed for 6 categories of heat waves, ranging from mild to extreme. The characteristics and frequency of occurrence of heat waves in each category serve as a guide to the selection and operation of heat relief measures (e.g., shades, fans, sprinkling) appropriate for specific locations. This should provide a basis for improved environmental management of feedlot cattle in hot weather.

    Interpretive Summary:
Heat waves reduce feed intake and performance of ad-lib-fed feedlot cattle, and sometimes cause death of vulnerable animals. Recent research results provide knowledge of shorter-term, dynamic responses of feeder cattle to the onset of heat. These results emphasize the importance of acute and adaptive phases of exposure, and the influence of prior conditioning to heat. Use of this knowledge to limit the impact of heat waves is dependent on the feedlot manager to recognize potential vulnerability of his animals in the context of forecast conditions, and to act accordingly. Forecasts are valuable only to the extent that they influence decisions.

Although mostly known for its cold and snowy winters the badger state of Wisconsin is not immune from the tragedies caused by heat waves. Probably the most memorable heat wave in recent history occurred in 1995 when two major heat waves affected most of Wisconsin. That summer 151 people died of heat and humidity along with approximately 400 heat-related illnesses. The 1995 summer heat waves hold the record as the No. 1 weather-related killer in Wisconsin since it became a state in 1848. Most deaths occurred in the major urban cities in southeast Wisconsin, as in every state hit by the heat wave that year the elderly and young age groups were hit the hardest. Again in 1999, three separate heat waves hit Wisconsin in July, claiming 20 lives. Twelve of these deaths were directly related to the extreme heat and humidity. For the other eight deaths, heat was found to be the secondary cause of death.

NOAA Unveils New Method To Warn of Heat Waves
The National Weather Service announced a new technique to warn citizens across the nation of advancing heat waves up to seven days before their onset. The Commerce Department’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) developed the Mean Heat Index, which became fully operational in May, to help save lives through better preparations. The Mean Heat Index is a measure of how hot the temperatures actually feel to a person over the course of the day. It differs from the traditional Heat Index in that it is an average of the Heat Index from the hottest and coldest times of each day. It combines factors such as surface and ambient heat with humidity and other environmental factors.

"The Mean Heat Index captures this potentially serious condition by including data from what should be a cooler portion of the day, and factoring that in to give a 'big picture' of the day's temperatures, not just the day's high."

    Chief WSI/INTELLICAST Meteorologist
Heat waves are a part of summer...some enjoy them, yet some long for the cool weather of fall. Regardless of your preference for heat or coolness, though, we must all recognize that extreme heat can be dangerous...as dangerous as major storms in fact! As with storms, there are deaths associated with extreme heat. Last year in the United States there were 34 documented deaths of children due to hyperthermia (heat stroke) after being left alone in vehicles. This is only slightly less than the annual average number of 39 persons killed by tornadoes each year! (Sources: Kids 'N Cars, 2002
