Home Articles 4-H Hedgies Have Teeth Too!
By Marian Brown According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, eighty percent of dogs and seventy percent of cats have periodontal disease by the age of three! Alarming statistics? Yes, and it is known that proper dental care could increase their life by two to five years. Although statistics are not available for hedgehogs, veterinarians agree that hedgehogs do need regular dental care. They have found that by the age of 6, almost all ferrets are suffering from gingivitis, the early stage of periodontal disease. Unlike humans, animals rarely get cavities. This is because cavities are primarily caused by the high sugar content of the human diet. Periodontal disease affects both human and mammals (including hedgehogs) alike. Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria and plaque which attach the soft gum tissue of the mouth. The first stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis. This is very common. In this stage, the bacteria have mixed with saliva and formed plaque. The plaque adheres to the teeth and hardens, forming tarter and calculus. These tarter deposits irritate the gum tissue and cause inflammation, swelling and infection. It is this stage that gingivitis is most notable. Early warning signs of gingivitis are sensitive gum tissue, redness or bleeding gums, trouble eating/chewing and bad breath. The breath may take on a sulfur (rotting eggs) odor from the by-products of the bacteria in the mouth. This is often the first sign.

hedgehogs have becomea popular pet in the last couple of years. Copyright 2001 by PageWise, Inc....... Title How to care for your new pet hedgehog
http://vt.essortment.com/howtocarepet_rkbz.htm
How to care for your new pet hedgehog
The experience that most people have with hedgehogs is through the character of Miss Tiggywinkle, a popular character featured in the Beatrix Potter stories. Hedgehogs in the last couple of years have become some of the most desired pets in the exotic animal trade. But what exactly is a hedgehog? Hedgehogs are about the size of a large hamster, although some species can get a bit larger. All hedgehogs are covered on the back with spines. They have sharp narrow faces with small eyes. Their faces and their underbellies are covered in fur. The spines are for their protection. When another animal or human being poses a threat, they roll up into a ball of spines which deters most animals from bothering them. bodyOffer(31391) There are no hedgehogs native to North America. While there is a European hedgehog, the African Pygmy Hedgehog is the type you will find as a pet. Hedgehogs can sometimes be found in a pet store or through a local breeder. They range in price from about $60 and up depending on the color of the hedgehog. There is the most common color, which is salt and pepper. The salt and pepper hedgehog has brown spines with white tips. Hedgehogs have many more colors though including an albino variety, and rare colors such as snowflake and apricot. If you want a rare color be prepared to end up going to a breeder and paying a minimum of $100, if not more. Now that you have your hedgehog, how do you care for it? The first thing you need to be concerned with it is taming your hedgehog. Hedgehogs are not a domesticated animal and therefore need to be tamed so that you can handle them. The best way to do this is to spend some quality time with your pet hedgehog. Hold the hedgehog and even if it rolls itself into a ball, continue to hold it. The hedgehog will soon adjust and realize that you are not a threat and will slowly begin to unroll itself. You will need to do this everyday. If you get out of the habit of repeating this ritual your hedgehog will go back to being unhandleable. In your first attempts at handling your hedgehog it is recommended that you invest in a pair of gloves so the spines don’t hurt your hands. These animals are nocturnal, so you will be doing the majority of your bonding in the evening hours.

CARE OF THE PET HEDGEHOG Dawn Wrobel Ain't No Creek Ranch 2553 W. Offner Road Beecher, IL 60401-3347 INTRODUCTION The African hedgehog has become increasingly popular as a pet during this decade. Unfortunately, their popularity has increased ahead of our knowledge of their proper needs in a captive environment. As you begin to see these pets in your practice, keep in mind that many of their problems may be related to diet and environment. To understand how captivity affects hedgehogs, it is helpful to know a little about their natural environment. Atelerix albiventris is a member of the order Insectivora, and is known alternately as the African hedgehog, African pygmy hedgehog, four-toed hedgehog and white bellied hedgehog. It is found throughout Central Africa and is not currently an endangered animal. The hedgehogs seen in captivity are almost entirely domestically bred. There are other genus of hedgehogs found in Europe and Asia, but they are not readily imported and thus are not seen in the US pet trade. African hedgehogs are small, primitive mammals varying in weight from 250 to 600 grams. Although their bellies are covered with soft, usually white, fur, their entire dorsal surface is covered with short spines. These are not barbed as in the unrelated porcupine. Typically, the spines or quills are white or ivory with a center band of dark brown, dark gray or black. One of the unique features of the animal is it's ability to roll up tightly into a ball, entirely covering its face and feet. In this position, few predators, and few veterinarians, are able to successfully unroll the animal. The spines feel quite sharp when crisscrossed and upright in this defensive posture. When the animal relaxes, the quills lie flat on the body and feel like bristles rather than needles.

February Ezine from Practical Pet Care IN THIS ISSUE: EDITOR'S CORNER
Steph Bairey, Editor/Webmaster
Practical Pet Care Greetings, Well, it's been quite a while since I last wrote to you all. Our last ezine was in October, in fact. Why the lapse? A number of big things have occurred lately: in October, we had our server crash. In November, a family emergency took me out of state for three weeks. In December and January, due to an upcoming move, I was working 100+ hours a week at three jobs. It is only now that life is starting to get back to normal, whatever 'normal' is. I do hope everyone can excuse the delay in receiving their ezines lately. I rather figured people would rather wait until we had enough time to put together a decent one, instead of being asked to read something that had been thrown together in my spare time. If you can't do it well, don't do it at all, right? The good news is that I can finally get back to the business of improving Practical Pet Care, not just maintaining it. There is a long list of neat features I'll be adding this month. Most are fun little things, like the ability to include a picture with your forum posts. Some are major ones, like adding eight new forums, covering guinea pigs, farm animals, betta fish, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, feeder animals, activism links, and a Help forum. I'll also be updating the look-and-feel of the site, to give our eyes something new and fresh to look at.

Familiar examples include salmonellosis, ringworm, rabies and plague. In the last decade, public attention has focused on the potential transmission of diseases such as salmonellosis from reptiles to their owners. Less attention and risk are associated with small animals compared to imported reptiles. However, sometimes pet owners wonder if they can catch a disease from a pet such as a hamster or rat. A host of potential pathogens including bacteria, internal parasites and fungi can be transmitted between animals and people, although no parasitic protozoan diseases are likely to be acquired by pet owners from small animals.

Family: Erinaceidae "Dizzy" is a one and a half year old female hedgehog. She is a very sweet, playful pet. She loves to give her owner kisses, especially when offered her favorite treats, bananas and cottage cheese! Her favorite evening activity is to waddle onto her exercise wheel and get her daily workout. These adorable little hedgehogs make the perfect apartment pet! They have cute little faces and you'll love their darling waddle. Touted as the "new pet of the 90's" , hedgehogs make a very quiet and small friend. They have virtually no odor and are not aggressive as long as you hold them regularly. They virtually fit in the palm of your hand! Being basically a solitary animal, they don't mind being left alone for long periods of time, especially during the day. They get active in the evening and that's when you are more likely to be home to enjoy them. Yes, they make the perfect apartment pet! Description:
The hedgehog is a small mammal about the size of a guinea pig. They have a long pointy snout, large eyes and ears, four digits on each foot and a short tail. Their coloring varies from black to white to grey. Soft white to dark brown or even black fur covers their face and underparts. They have white-tipped spines or quills covering the top of their head, their back and their sides. Though they are not related to porcupines, they also use their quills for defense. They live five to seven years.
