Vitorino Paiva Castro Neto and Marcos Antonio Campacci
Vitorino Paiva Working together or alone, they have been studying Brazilian species since 20 years ago, always concerned about the correct identification and occurrence of our orchids. The genera Bifrenaria, Pabstia and Encyclia have deserved a special attention although other genera such as Oncidium, Promenaea and Pleurothallis are also object of their work.
Recently, they have described, together, more than 25 new Brazilian species.
In this interview they clarify some doubts about synonyms, talk about the way they do their researches and about the most recent works they have published, Icones Orchidacearum Brasiliensis I and Brazilian Flora, Orchids (1) (CD Room).
Marcos Campacci
Orchid News: How did you start to be concerned about the study of orchids? First as orchidists and then as orchidologists?
Marcos A. Campacci:
Our companion Eduardo L. M. Catharino, who was a member of this staff and frequently came with us (Him, my self, Vitorino, Pedro Vedovello, Artur N. Heger, among others) to the journeys into the woods, introduced me to Guido Pabst. After that I consulted Pabst very often and we became good friends.
In this way, I plunged deeply in this mad world of orchids...

  • Quick Tip: Terrarium A terrarium is a collection of live plants, usually in a glass or plastic container. To make your own terrarium, you will need a large jar or a small aquarium or other clear container that has a lid. The lid keeps water vapor from escaping so that the terrarium stays moist. You will need a vent (poke small holes, if your lid does not have one) to allow some air into the terrarium. Cover the bottom of the jar with about an inch of dirt. You might also want to add some pebbles to the bottom, or some decorative rocks on the top layer. If available, put some moss in your terrarium; moss grows well in damp conditions. Small shade and water-loving plants also do well in terrariumscheck with a garden shop or an online gardening site if you need help finding some. Keep your terrarium where it will receive partial sunlight. After the first time, you will only need to water your plants occasionally. The water vapor from the plants will stay in the terrarium and be continually "recycled," so there should be water vapor on the sides of the container.

In Search of Asplenium pinnatifidum In Eastern Oklahoma McLoud High School Mcloud, Oklahoma Brad Story March 11, 2002 Introduction Asplenium pinnatifidum , commonly known as the Blunt Lobed Spleenwort, belongs to the family Aspleniaceae. These ferns are evergreen with monomorphic fronds. The fronds are simple, deeply lobed, and narrowly deltoid in outline with long-attenuate apices. A. pinnatifidum is a hybrid between Asplenium rhizophyllum and Asplenium montanum. A. pinnatifidum is currently reported to occur in only one location in Oklahoma, Robbers Cave State Park. The two objectives for this project are to find out if A. pinnatifidum grows in any other location, within Oklahoma, outside of Robbers Cave State Park, and to discover why it is isolated to Robbers Cave State Park, if not found elsewhere.
    Methods and Materials
The initial research for this project consisted of studying 19 herbarium sheets of three different herbariums. Five sheets were studied from the BRIT Herbarium in Fort Worth, Texas, 11 sheets from the Arkansas State University Herbariun, and three sheets from the Oklahoma State University Herbarium. When available, I recorded the collectors name, collection number, collection date, and any pertinent habitat information.

    Mining and Monitoring Databases
For each of these ideas I will supply the starting pointers to the relevant reading.
    • World-Wide Herbarium: An herbarium is a collection of plant specimens. Much like the effort to put book libraries' card catalogs on-line and then on the net, herbariums are starting to on-line catalogs. However, a critical difference among herbariums and book libraries is that there is substantial information on the "card" for a plant specimen. In particular where and when the specimen was collected, who collected it and field notes. Thus, the integration of on-line herbariums into a single virtual database promises to be a tool of extraordinary value for botanists. Last year, in CS386 Database Management, 30 students successfully queried and integrated results from multiple herbarium sites. This year the "default project" will be a refinement of last year's effort.

    Abstract
We implement MPH (My Private Herbarium) for the project "World Wide Herbarium" of CS386, Database Management, course. The idea is to create a federated database made up of heterogeneous component databases. The component databases are various herbaria set up at academic institutions across the world. We use the world wide web to take advantage of these on-line herbaria and create a "virtual" database containing all the information of the component systems. MPH enable users to search all or any combination of the included eight data sources, and obtain an unified outputs including plants classification table, US and Texas distribution maps, and hierarchy. We implement "parallel query" on basis of "sequential query" using "multiple processes" to improve the search efficiency. The two methods are compared, and future improvements are discussed.
