** Description **
Teachers of political science, social studies, and economics, as well as school library media specialists, will find this resource invaluable for incorporating the Internet into their classroom lessons. Over 150 primary source web sites are referenced and paired with questions and activities designed to encourage critical thinking skills. Completing the activities for the lessons in this book will allow students to evaluate the source of information, the content presented, and it usefulness in the context of their assignments.
Along with each Web site, a summary of the site's contents identifies important primary source documents such as constitutions, treaties, speeches, court cases, statistics, and other official documents. The questions and activites invite the students to log on to the Web site, read the information presented, interact with the data, and analyze it critically to answer such questions as: Who created this document? Is the source reliable? How is the information useful and how does it relate to present-day circumstances? If I were in this situation, would I have responded the same way as the person in charge? Strengthening these critical thinking skills will help prepare students for both college and career in the 21st century.

Corporate History
The newest program at SolutionSkills is the Scholarship Club, which began in Fall 2000. This is a group of students that meet regularly to share the experiences they have had in their scholarship search. Recent activites have included College Fair night and a College Tour to UF and USF. The scholarship club program is free of charge. Demand for test preparation programs of all types has grown tremendously in recent years. SolutionSkills contracted with Riley Elementary School for a three year period to create and operate an after school test preparation center to help improve CAT-5 scores and remove it from the state's "Critically Low" list. A full program of prep classes for the SAT, ACT, FCAT, CLAST, GRE, and GMAT has continued to grow as the demand for such classes has greatly increased. SAT/ACT prep classes are currently taught at area high school campuses in the evening in cooperation with those schools' principals and P.T.O's. Parenting Programs have been a priority to reach our goal to find ways to assist parents in doing a better and more effective job of helping students learn. Speakers have been provided to area schools on a variety of education-related topics including homework assistance, teaching responsibility, study skills, and cooperatively working with teachers and schools. A three-part summer parenting series in 1999 provided information to parents dealing with the teen issues of stress, school, and family communication.

In 1925, Carter G. Woodson, an educator and historian began campaigning among schools, journals and black newspapers calling for a 'Negro History Week' to be celebrated. This would honor the importance of black achievement and contribution in the United States. He was able to institute this 'Negro History Week' in 1926 during the second week of February. This time was chosen because Abraham Lincoln's and Frederick Douglass' birthdays occurred then. Woodson was awarded the Springarn Medal from the NAACP for his accomplishment. In 1976, Negro History Week turned into Black History Month which we celebrate today. Read more about
