Africa Activity Guide This book of activities is designed to help students in grades 3-8 to develop an appreciation and respect for Africaits diversity, its wealth in people and cultures and its rich history. It was developed in 1993 by the Field Museum of Natural History as a companion guide for their permanent exhibit on Africa. Some activities ask students to observe portions of the exhibit. Others ask students to apply themes from Africa to their own lives by mapping their community, designing their own Royal Palace, or drawing their own memorial tusk. California History Guide This guide is designed to assist the educator in preparing students for a visit to the Natural History Museum as well as to support the instruction of California history in the classroom. The guide provides general background information on California history, from the days of the first Californians through the Age of Railroads, and activities that can be used in the classroom. The California History Hall is located on the Lower Level, or Ground Floor, of the Natural History Museum. Much of the information and events discussed in this guide relate to objects and artifacts within this Hall. Should you be unable to visit the museum with your class, we hope you will take advantage of the activities and available resources to enhance your classroom curriculum.

All of these lessons have been tested and proven successful in the classroom. Let me know if they work for you. Have a great lesson plan you'd like to share? Send it to me! I'll try it out and post it here. I'm hoping eventually to have a large library of proven lesson plans here.

To help you find just what you need, I've sorted these lessons in a few different ways: By AGE LEVEL By LESSON TYPE By cross-curricular CONTENT Lesson Plans Sorted by Age Level Most of these lesson plans work with a large age range (with appropriate adjustments in level of sophistication), but I've listed them here in approximate order, from youngest to oldest. These lessons are presented with fairly specific instructions, for the most part, but should not be understood as carved-in-stone methods. Every teacher will have her or his individual slant on these activities.

Understanding Weather and Climate
"Students will understand infrared rays from the sun enter Earth’s atmosphere, the gas carbon dioxide (CO2), which is given off by green plants, traps the sun’s warmth within Earth’s atmosphere, the greenhouse effect is important to life on Earth because it provides our planet with the warmth it needs for animal and plant life to thrive, and the burning of certain fuels creates excess CO2, which traps even more heat within Earth’s atmosphere, possibly creating a phenomenon known as global warming, which may be harmful to life on Earth."
