Researching and Reporting on Current Events Using News and Sports? Please feel free to print any or all of this Guide for your own use, or for distribution to other interested teachers! Curriculum Areas:
Social Studies/Current Events Grade Level: 6, 7 or 8 (suggested) Learning Outcomes: This activity will provide students with the opportunity to:
  • Use the Internet to research information for the whole class (augment technological skills)
  • Research and retrieve a specific story of the day
  • Deliver an oral report on the story and its significance in modern Canadian History
The Social Studies curriculum for your senior elementary students likely includes outcomes related to Canadian History and Current Events. Many teachers start the day or their History class with brief reports on Current Events. Sometimes these include the weather, sports and news. In this case you could direct students to a particular story in the news - for example, the death of Dr. Camille Laurin, father of Quebec's controversial language law, Bill 101. This suggested lesson plan can serve several purposes, depending on how much time you devote to it. You can simply use this as a short, regular activity based on the day's news stories. Or you could incorporate it into a lesson on the history of Canadian bilingualism, for example, or on the topic of the emergence and history of the Parti Quebecois.

The Best of History Web Sites

History portal for teachers and students
Grade Level: 9-12, Advanced, Professional http://www.besthistorysites.net/ CONTENT: The Best of History Web Sites portal was developed teacher Thomas Daccord, at the Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Massachusetts, for history teachers and students. It provides links to some of the best history resources on the Internet, rated and categorized. AESTHETICS: The pages are attractive and easily read. Text and background colors work well together. The muted color scheme creates a “grown-up” look that should appeal to high school students. ORGANIZATION: The left-side menu list the ten history categories, as well as lesson plans, multimedia, and research. Clicking on a category name displays a sub-menu for quickly finding information. There is also a drop-down menu at the top of each page. REVIEW: Resources at this site are well organized into ten categories, including: Prehistory, Ancient/Biblical, Medieval, U.S. History, Early Modern European, 20th Century, World War II, Art History, General Resources, and Maps. All categories are further divided into sub-groups. Each of the annotated Web links is rated for quality using a five star system, five for outstanding. Included are sections for the best lesson plans/activities, multimedia, and research, as well as a free monthly newsletter. There is also a special section on

LESSON PLANS
Lesson Plans: Strong, concise statements of objectives are always an essential component of any lesson plan. Once the objectives have been determined, the lesson and unit plan design follows. New teachers should develop thorough lesson plans, in part to ensure that important details and concerns have not been over looked, but also because it provides a disciplined and structured way to think about the art of teaching.
...In general, a good lesson plan will contain variations of the following items: *Title and brief introduction of the concepts to be addressed. *Goal(s) or the relationship of the lesson to the purposes of the curricular goals. *Rationale… why are the students learning this. *Instructional Objectives, and *Resources… all relevant vocabulary and definitions, books, audio visual aids, articles.
