by Eibhlin Eilis Morey MacIntosh
Many of the LDS ("Mormon") recordswhich cover most of the world's population, not just Mormons are now online at their FamilySearch website. However, to get a better sense of their records, for more comprehensive searching, and more complete results, you should visit an LDS Family History Library once anyway. Go to the white pages of the phone book, and look under "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints - family history center" or something like that. Call them for hours and directions. Then go there. If you're nervous about giving them your name and address when you sign their guest book, either provide a fake name, or ask if you can note yourself as "visitor." (But I've never heard of them using their guest books as a missionary resource.) The Mormons ("latter-day saints" or "LDS") believe that, to achieve Salvation, they must research and document their ancestry, andby proxyintroduce their ancestors to the LDS Church. This means that they do proxy baptisms and marriages in their Temples, which are not open to the public.

Users and Uses of Local history libraries and Archives. Anne Hiller Clark. LocalHistory Collections in Libraries. Englewood , CO Libraries Unlimited, Inc.
http://www.pages.drexel.edu/~avh23/rol.html
Users and Uses of Local History Libraries and Archives Anne Hiller Clark Introduction Phillips (1995, p. 2) defines local history as, “history from the perspective of a community, state or region.” Local history collections usually include many types of materials, such as photographs, scrap books and personal papers which may not be found in other types of collections. Local history collections are housed in a variety of settings, including public libraries, academic libraries, special libraries, public and private archives, local history societies and centers and museums. These different settings lend themselves to varying user groups and uses. Searching the literature for information about users and uses of these types of collections involved search terms such as historical libraries (LCSH term), and local history, local studies, regional history, and family history (keywords and descriptors). One important note: the terminology used by researchers for “local history” varies depending on whether the researcher is working in the US , the UK or Australia Recent literature (1995-present) from the US , the UK and Australia presents a picture of the current state of local history librarianship in English-speaking parts of the world.

36. REGIONAL RECORDS
REGIONAL RECORDS. LOCAL history libraries. Most town libraries containa local history section which may contain books, family papers
http://www.kirstie.holt.dial.pipex.com/regions.htm
REGIONAL RECORDS
LOCAL HISTORY LIBRARIES
Most town libraries contain a local history section which may contain books, family papers and local publications not available anywhere else. The local publications often contain pictures and oral testimony gleaned from local families. These will enhance your knowledge of the traditions of the area and may even have specific information relating to your family.
COUNTY ARCHIVES
Each county has it's own council run archives. Many Kirk Sessions records and other papers have been returned from the Scottish Record Office to these centres. Landed family papers, poor relief applications and militia lists are just some of the treasures that are available. Each county is different however; what is available in Angus may not be available in West Lothian.
FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETIES
I can visit those Family History Societies which have premises, on your behalf, however, I recommend you join the Family History Society pertinent to your ancestral area. They generally have a newsletter which comes out a few times a year. You may find family members and helpful area specific information. A quick question in their queries page may solve a puzzle that has kept you up nights. Q:Where did that farm disappear to?A: the name changed to...
Additional Costs
Once you have fixed your family in time and place from previous research, I can visit all these repositories on your behalf. Some have a small search fee which would be payable along with my own search fee.You may wish me to visit a repository that is some distance away, and for this I charge a travelling fee. If the travelling time to and from the repository is an hour or less, then there will be no travel fee. Every half hour thereafter is charged at 3.50 pounds/approx 6 US Dollars. There may also be a petrol fee of between £5.00 and £30.00 depending on the distance travelled. Should the round trip be over four hours travel time, I would generally take the train and provide a receipt. Some detinations in the Highlands and Islands can only be reached by car and ferry in which case I would provide a ferry receipt.
