Faculty Biographies Helen Binkerd Young (1877 - 1959) graduated from Cornell University's architecture program in 1900. As a student, she won an architectural medal and wrote and published The Lincoln Hall Cookbook. Unable to get a job teaching architecture, Young returned to Cornell in 1910 to teach household arts in the Department of Home Economics. The lack of teaching jobs available to women in architecture, coupled with the need for qualified faculty in a young department without much money for faculty salaries, explains in part why Young offered to teach in the Department of Home Economics for free. In her teaching, Young drew heavily on her training as an architect, encouraged the application of design principles to home planning and furnishing, and thus made a lasting impact on contemporary interior design. Welcome to my Gallery of Home Economics Textbooks. I will be adding new books as I get them, provided they're as gorgeous as the ones pictured here, of course. I really hated home ec when I had to take it in junior high school. Dress by Bess V. Oerke (Peoria, Illinois: Chas A. Bennett Co., Inc., 1956; Ninth Large Printing, 1960) - I got this one at a St. Vincent de Paul in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. What's particularly pleasing about it, besides the beautiful color cover, is the fact that someone's sewing assignment - a small square of white cotton with some large and wobbly stitches in red - was left between the covers. Even better, there was also a copy of The Mercedian , school newspaper of Mercy High, dated Feb. 17, 1967, announcing that Mary Clare Fabishak finished first among Mercy seniors in the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow contest. I was at a particularly self-conscious and uncomfortable stage of adolescence, and I hated "girly" stuff with a passion. I already knew how to cook, so that was no big deal, although eating during class was definitely a benefit.

"This initiative will help better define current irrigation practices in the Rio Grande Basin and generate new information to improve efficiency. We will disseminate all our findings to the public in practical ways that directly impact water use in the region." Runyan said the initiative will focus on five areas: water reuse, water conservation practices, water quality, ecological water uses that impact irrigation and use of satellite imagery and remote sensing technologies. The U.S. Department of Agriculture approved a three-year, $2.6 million grant to finance projects under the initiative in New Mexico and Texas, with about $800,000 earmarked for New Mexico.
