From the time he was in his teens, DIY's Weekend Handyman and Home Energy and Savings host Paul Ryan knew he wanted to fix things. After graduating from the University of Minnesota with a degree in speech communications, he began his fix-it-up career at the Valleyfair Amusement Park in Shakopee, Minnesota, where he worked for 12 years as a carpenter-inspector. His duties included structural repairs, ride maintenance, plumbing and general troubleshooting. "It was basically like running a small city," he says.

But with the arrival of winter and their first child, the Robertsons could no longer overlook the hidden air leaks and uninsulated walls, ceilings and floors in their home. Portable space heaters, thermal undershirts and wrapping up in blankets were part of everyday life. Help for Oil-Heated Homes Their first step was a free energy audit from the State Home Oil Weatherization (SHOW) program. The Robertsons got bids from three insulation and heating contractors and got a 6.5 percent SHOW loan to finance the improvements: insulation blown into the attic and walls, blanket insulation and ground cover installed under the floors, and a high-efficiency oil burner. The Robertsons paid $2,000 for the insulation work and $700 for the oil burner. They got a $400 SHOW rebate to defray part of the cost. Estimated energy savings of $250 a year will pay back the balance of their investment.

There are many ways to reduce your energy costs at home. Here are some simple ways to improve your savings.
  • Use insulated thermal backed draperies for your windows. This will reduce the amount of heat entering your house when you close the drapes on a hot day.
  • Increase the amount of insulation in your attic. The higher the "R" value of insulation, the less energy it will take to heat or cool.
  • Insulate your foundation walls. If your basement or crawl space is unheated, insulate your floor joists.
  • Make sure your windows have good seals and the window jams are tight. This will reduce air infiltration.
  • Consider installation of roof vents and air inlets to provide better roof ventilation reducing the heat in the attic.
  • Inspect, repair or replace weather seal on doors to reduce air infiltration.

No sweat, winter home improvement projects save energy, money
Let's start from the top with ceiling insulation. Florida homes built before 1982 may very well have inadequate ceiling insulation. Ceiling insulation is one of the single best investments a homeowner can make to improve the overall comfort of the home, save energy and keep electric bills down. You might also consider installing ceiling fans as a low cost, energy-saving investment, too. They help save energy dollars because you can raise the air conditioner's thermostat to an energy-conserving setting and still be cool in the room you're occupying. Ceiling fans can be used year-round, too. In winter, use the reverse mode to help bring warm air that tends to rise, down to the living space. Don't waste energy by leaving the fan on when you leave the room. Turn it off for additional savings. Install a programmable thermostat on the heating and air conditioning system to automate the task of raising and lowering the thermostat. Program it once and no one need remember (or forget) to adjust it. The cost of a programmable thermostat is around $50 at a home improvement store. This low-cost item can save you hundreds over the year.

FPL offers home improvement ideas to save energy, money
JUNO BEACH, Fla. Florida Power & Light Company says homeowners can improve the overall comfort of their homes as well as take control of electric bills by including energy-saving features into their home improvement plans. "There are many things homeowners can either do themselves or hire a contractor to do that will make their homes more comfortable and energy efficient. Many of these home improvement ideas are low cost, too," said Bill Hamilton, vice president of customer service for FPL. The company offers the following energy saving ideas for incorporation into a residential home improvement project:
  • Programmable thermostat. Installing a programmable thermostat on the heating and air conditioning system saves time and money. For example, raising and lowering the home's thermostat as residents come and go during the workweek can save money. The programmable thermostat saves time because once programmed it raises and lowers the temperature setting, automatically, so no one needs to remember to do it. Ceiling fans.

Summary: This fact sheet will provide you with an overview on residential, energy-efficient financing programs, including energy-efficient mortgages. To view illustrations, you can download the PDF version ( PDF 163 KB ) of this fact sheet ( Download Acrobat Reader ). See Related Links below for more publications on related topics, which aren't included in the PDF version. It's easier than you may think to enjoy the savings and comfort of an energy-efficient home. Since an energy-efficient home is cost-effective, there are financing programs available from mortgages to home improvement loans, which allow more people the opportunity to live in such a home. You can benefit from energy-efficient financing whether you're buying, selling, refinancing, or remodeling a home. If you're looking to buy an energy-efficient home, you can qualify for a better, more comfortable home because with lower utility costs, you can afford a slightly larger mortgage payment. You can also obtain financing to make energy-efficient improvements to an older home before moving in or to your existing home. And if you put your home on the market, you can use its energy efficiency as an attractive selling point. Home Energy Rating Most energy-efficient financing programs will encourage you to have an energy rating for your new or existing home, which will tell you and the lender how energy efficient it is. A rating typically involves an inspection by a professional energy rater who is certified under a nationally or state accredited home energy rating system (HERS). There are several options regarding HERS, so the type of HERS used will depend on where you live. Some states even have more than one HERS. Some of the organizations listed at the end of this fact sheet may be able to provide you with more information regarding HERS in your state. Here's an example of a
