FOSSIL HOMINIDS - AN EMPIRICAL PREMISE OF THE DESCRIPTIVE DEFINITION OF HOMO SAPIENS

Geographical and temporal dimension in the history of man
The timescale of the remains referred to in this paper comprises the period of the last 5 million years (myr). The historical times can, roughly, be identified with the holocene period, i.e. the present, post(inter)glacial stage. The end of the last glaciation occurred some 10-15 thousand years (kyr) ago. The previous stage, called quartenary, Pleistocene or glacial stage, lasted about 2.5 myr. The beginning of the preglacial, Pliocene or tertiary period is adopted as 15 myr ago (see fig. 1). In paleoanthropology there is a consensus to accept all the holocene hominid remains as the remains of Homo sapiens , no matter how different are the details of their anatomy (AAPA statement, 1996). The earlier remains, however, depending on their cranial morphology or brain capacity are commonly argued to represent different biological species

Journal of Paleontology
This journal is published bimonthly to promote the study of paleontology . Each issue measures 9.5x7", with about 200 pages, 10-15 feature articles and some shorter pieces like announcements, notes, and society reports. There was a size change to 11x8.5" starting with volume 62. The feature articles have references and are nicely illustrated with plates. Issue number 6 of each volume has a subject index and an author index for the volume. The subjects listed for each issue represent just a few of the topics. Common subjects like foraminifera, conodonts, mollusks, and trace fossils are present in nearly every issue. The best way to find the issues you seek is to consult a bibliography for your topic or a multi-decade index for this journal. Published by the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists and the Paleontological Society, with generous support and cooperation of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Condition: The individual journals are clean and in very good condition with some lightly soiled and lightly rubbed covers and some lightly bumped corners. Spines are often darkened or faded with minor color chips, most issues have a small name printed on the front. Volumes 44 and 45 have a faint smell of damp which should fade with storage in an open area. Please ask if you want more a detailed description for any given issue. I have mentioned any specific problems, if any, in the individual listing.

"We were able to document one of the earliest benign bone tumors ever found, one individual may have had a surgical amputation of his hand, and several individuals had examples of osteoarthritis which may have made them a little stiff in the morning," said Dr. Monge. SUMMER 1999-When researchers from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology were given the first-ever opportunity to study the radiographic images of the famous Krapina Neandertal fossil bone collection, they were looking for signs of pathology, disease, and weakness in a group of hominids long thought by many to have "died out" in classic Darwinian survival-of-the-fittest style. Their ultimate diagnosis, however: these Neandertals were in large part a robust, healthy people. "This is exciting new data, and the first time researchers have had an opportunity to view, in total, so many radiographic images of fossils from an entire group of Neandertals, as found together in one site," noted Dr. Alan Mann

(pronounced nah-ah-sho-ee-BEE-to-SAWR-us) Naashoibitosaurus ( meaning "Naashoibito lizard") was a plant-eating dinosaur that lived during the late Cretaceous period . This hadrosaur (duck-billed dinosaur) was about 30 ft (10 m) long. A fossil (only a skull) has been found in New Mexico, USA. Naashoibitosaurus was named by Hunt and Lucas in 1993. The type species is N. ostromi . Naashoibitosaurus may be a variant of Kritosaurus navajovius. NANOFOSSIL Nanofossils are microscopic fossils that are very abundant, widely distributed, and time-specific (because of their high evolutionary rates). They are very useful index fossils. NANOSAURUS (pronounced NAN-oh-SAWR-us) Nanosaurus ( meaning "dwarf lizard") was a small bipedal plant-eater from the Jurassic Period (156-145 million years ago). It was about 4 feet long (120 cm) and 1.5 feet tall (46 cm). Nanosaurus is known from a jawbone found in western

PLACERIAS

(pronounced pluh-SEHR-ree-us) Placerias was a herding dicynodont (a so-called "mammal-like reptile") that lived during the late Triassic period , roughly 222 to 215 million years ago. This thick-set, hippo-like herbivore (plant-eater) ate low-lying plants, like ferns, club mosses, roots, etc. It had sturdy tusks and a beak that it may have used to root in the soil and obtain food on desert-like plains. Placerias was up to 12.5 ft (3.5 m) long and weighed about 1 ton. Fossils have been found in the USA, including over 40 P. gigas fossils found at the Petrified Forest National Park, near St Johns, Arizona [the site was first excavated in the 1920's by Charles Lewis Camp (1893-1975)].

The Latest Leakey searches for Our Earliest Ancestors
A Conversation with Meave Leakey
N ot long after Louis and Mary Leakey unearthed "Zinjanthropus" in 1959 and reignited excitement about the human lineage, their son, Richard, recruited a young zoology student from the University of North Wales at Bangor to join the archeological team. Meave Epps married her mentor and collaborated on many discoveries and reconstructions, including "Nariokotome Boy," the most complete skeleton of Homo erectus found to date. Richard later turned his attention toward bolstering a desperately needed conservation movement in Kenya. After he lost his lower legs in an airplane crash in 1993 and could no longer work in the field, Meave turned her attention from fossil mammals to take charge of the family paleoanthropological tradition. Meave Leakey now heads the paleontology division at the National Museums of Kenya, and in 1994 she led a team which discovered the earliest known hominid species, Australopithecus anamensis . She was interviewed from her home in Nairobi by California Wild editor Keith Howell.
