Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) Education and Occupations: Education: He attended the Friends Pacific Academy in Newburg, Oregon and a business school in Salem from 1885-1887. He took college preparatory instruction at Palo Alto, California in 1891. At 17, Hoover was the youngest member in the first class to come through the newly established Stanford University in 1891. He graduated from Stanford in 1895 with an A.B. in geology, having decided to become a mining engineer. Occupations: Hoover worked, in various capacities, as a mining engineer from 1896-1914. He gained international recognition during World War I for his efficient distribution of food and supplies to war-ravaged Europe. He headed the Commission for Relief in Belgium, the American Relief Administration, the Sugar Equalization Board, the Supreme Economic Council, the European Coal Council, and he served as a member of the War Trade Council. He was also a U.S. Food Administrator and he was the economic advisor to Woodrow Wilson at the Versailles Peace Conference. Whew! In 1919 he created the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace at Stanford University as a repository for Records on World War I.

I want all of you to go hear our President. And I want you to write an essay about the experience and about what you think of President Hoover's speech." Saturday? There was no way I could go. I had to mow the lawn. I had to get out all the hair-grass. (I could never get all the hairs.) Almost every Saturday I got a beating with the razor strop because my father found a hair. (I also got stropped during the week, once or twice, for other things I failed to do or didn't do right.) There was no way I could tell my father that I had to go see President Hoover. So, I didn't go. That Sunday I took some paper and sat down to write about how I had seen the President. His open car, trailing flowing streamers, had entered the football stadium. One car, full of secret service agents went ahead and two cars followed close behind. The agents were brave men with guns to protect our President. The crowd rose as the President's car entered the arena. There had never been anything like it before. It was the President. It was him. He waved. We cheered. A band played. SeagulIs circled overhead as if they too knew it was the President. And there were skywriting airplanes too. They wrote words in the sky like Prosperity is just around the corner.

He gained prominence in four major careers: engineering, international relief work, government and politics, and reform of governmental bureaucracy. Although Hoover spent 30 years in public service, the highest point of his public career, his presidency, was dominated by the Depression and proved a bitter disappointment. Herbert Clark Hoover was born in West Branch, Iowa, on Aug. 10, 1874. He was the second of three children in a family descended from a long line of Quakers. His father, Jesse Clark Hoover, a village blacksmith, died of typhoid fever when Herbert was six years old. Less than three years later, his mother, Huldah Minthorn Hoover, died of pneumonia. In 1884 he went to Newberg, Oreg., to live with an uncle, Henry John Minthorn, a country doctor interested in education. There Herbert attended a Quaker academy his uncle helped direct. In 1888, Dr. Minthorn moved to Salem, Oreg., where Hoover worked in his land settlement business as an office boy and attended night school. Then, at 17, Hoover entered Stanford University as a special student. He showed a marked aptitude for mathematics and geology, graduating with a degree in engineering in May 1895. Engineering Career After graduation, Hoover worked at odd jobs in California gold mines and as a mining engineer in Colorado; he later joined the staff of a leading mining engineer in San Francisco. In 1897, at 23, he went to work for the British mining firm of Bewick, Moreing and Company as chief of its gold-mining operations in Western Australia. A year later the Chinese government offered him a position as chief engineer of the Chinese Engineering and Mining Company.

Hoover was appointed U.S. Food Administrator. America had to provide food for her own armies and the other Allies, for the Allied peoples and for the American people at home. Herbert Hoover saw the effort as a willingness of the people to serve the nation voluntarily. He called his program food conservation, but many Americans called it "Hooverizing." There were wheatless Wednesdays and meatless Mondays, as examples. Hoover had faith that the American people would exhibit voluntary cooperation in the matter for food conservation. He didn't want laws to regulate food in America. Hoover's plan was that American homes would have to eat in such a way as to leave more food to be shipped abroad. He appealed to housewives to conserve food and eliminate waste. Signs and posters proclaimed, "Food Will Win the War."
