TRA is an incorporated, non-profit and volunteer-based organization that was started in 1999 to provide therapeutic and recreational horseback riding for children and adults with disabilities in Sault Ste Marie and surroundings. What do we offer? TRA is a member of the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association and the Ontario Therapeutic Riding Association . We offer a safe and professional program to enable children and adults with special needs to participate in recreational and therapeutic horseback riding activities. With the help of certified instructors and trained volunteers, participants are taught horsemanship skills appropriate for their age, needs and level of ability. The instructor works with caregivers and occupational therapists from the Children's Rehabilitation Centre Algoma and Community Living Algoma to develop individualized riding plans with educational, recreational and therapeutic goals. We use carefully selected horses to meet our riders' needs. Special equipment is used to ensure our riders' saftey. We provide ASTM-SEI approved riding helmets.

What are the benefits? Jamestown New Horizons is a program of equine-assisted therapy that takes disabled riders through a complex series of movements which consciously and unconsciously use all of the body's muscles. It is a program that exercises and strengthens weak muscles, relaxes and stretches spastic ones, assists in the development of coordination and balance, calms emotions and tremendously boosts the morale of children and adults. How? The horse rhythmically and naturally moves the rider's body in a manner similar to the human gait, improving posture, balance and muscle control. To a person who can't walk, riding feels like walking. Joints are exercised, stiffness is decreased and coordination improves gradually as the rider progresses in skill. Exercising the spirit is as important as exercising the body, and riding provides an enormous boost for people with physical and/or mental disabilities. Riding enables students to improve their self-esteem and motivation as they experience a sense of independence and freedom in the fresh air and sunshine.

Located at The National Ability Center’s Bronfman Family Recreational Center and Ranch, outside of Park City, Utah, horseback riding is one of the Center's fastest growing and most successful programs. The National Ability Center's therapeutic riding program offers group and private lessons with specially trained and nationally recognized instructors as well as scenic trail rides. Individuals of all ages with a variety of disabilities take part in this program. Adaptive equipment and side walkers are provided.
