Henry Hudson and His Crew Sailed into the River that Would Bear His Name
September 3, 1609

Hudson was not the first European explorer to discover this river. The Florentine navigator Giovanni da Verrazano discovered the Hudson in 1524. But Henry Hudson traveled the river much farther than its previous explorer. After 150 miles, the Half Moon did not reach the Pacific, but it did reach what would later become Albany, New York. There, they turned around. But as a result of Hudson's exploration, the river bears his name today. Hudson was a headstrong but courageous commander. Though he often mismanaged his crews by playing favorites or letting morale suffer, he was a competent navigator. He undertook four dangerous voyages, and made huge contributions to geographical knowledge. His exploration of the Hudson River led to Dutch colonization of the area.

Henry Hudson and His Crew Sailed into the River that Would Bear His Name
September 3, 1609

How did the Hudson River in New York and New Jersey get its name? On the misty morning of September 3, 1609, explorer Henry Hudson and his crew aboard the Half Moon sailed into the majestic river off the Atlantic coast by chance. Strong head winds and storms forced them to abandon the northeast voyage they had been assigned. Rather than return to Holland with nothing to report, the crew voted to look for the Northwest Passage, a legendary waterway that would carry a ship all the way from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. They passed by the island we know today as Manhattan and sailed up the river.

Henry Hudson Libby A, Sarah B. Maris F., Jennifer H. Portrait by Libby A., Map by Meghan G. Henry Hudson was born in the early 1570s in London, England. His first voyage was in 1607. He was an explorer for four years. In the spring of 1611, Henry Hudson died on one of his ships, the Half Moon. Henry Hudson had two main influences. His grandfather, who started the Moscovy Trading Company, was probably a great influence and inspiration to him. But the most inspiring of all was his son who joined him in all his wonderful journeys. Henry had a dream to try and find a sea route to China and Japan going through the North Pole. Before they left, they gathered food, fresh water, sleeping gear, clothes, navigation supplies, and an extra side boat. Henry Hudson voyaged around New York harbor. His crew thought he was insane for not turning back in deadly, icy waters. He navigated by compass mostly. He traveled by land, and has used several different ships. Henry Hudson was a smart and daring explorer, Coming across the Atlantic Ocean and up into the Arctic Ocean, Henry Hudson faced many perils. As the first person to explore so far north he had no maps to follow On his first voyage, he sailed northeast and followed the coast of Greenland and reach Spitsbergan. Unfortunately, huge ice floes sent him back to England. After the Moscovy Company lost interest, Henry Hudson joined up with the Dutch East Indian Company. On his last voyage, his crew put him, his son and seven crew members in a boat to starve.

    Introduction
Henry Hudson was an English explorer known for exploring the three large bodies of water named after him.
Early Life Hudson was possibly born on September 11, 1570. As a young boy he worked for the Muscovy Company, because his family owned shares in that company. When he was a young boy he started sailing with his father. His father was a sailor, his grandfather was a sailor, and his great- grandfather was a sailor. Henry had three sons Richard, John, and Oliver Hudson. Voyages/Expeditions Discoveries and Claims Henry discovered the Hudson River, Hudson Strait, and Hudson Bay. Hudson would be known as the father of the English Whaling Industry. He discovered that there was no Northwest Passageway. Then Hudson went farther than any other before him. Conclusion Hudson died in 1611 on his fourth voyage after discovering the Hudson Bay. Robert Juet and Henry Greene forced him, his son, and seven other crew members onto a small rowboat and cut them loose in the Hudson Bay. No one has heard from him since. Hudson is known for the three bodies of water named after him. Bibliography Chadwick, Ian. Ian Chadwick's Biography of Henry Hudson, 17th Century Explorer.

    Henry Hudson
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Henry Hudson (place and date of birth are unknown, but September 12, 1570 seems likely) was an English sea explorer and navigator. In , Hudson set sail on the Hopewell to find a northeast passage to Asia through the Arctic Ocean via the North Pole . The voyage was paid for by the Moscovy Company , one of a small number of corporations given Royal Charters . In June he reached the eastern shore of Greenland and started northward, mapping as they went. On the 20th they started out for Svalbard , eventually reaching an island on the northern end of the group on the 17th of July. At this point the ship was only 577 nautical miles from the pole, but it was clear there is no way to go further due to the ice and he decided to return to England on the 31st. On the return voyage Hudson discovered what is now known as Jan Mayen Island before reaching home in September.
