Coure Description: We will provide an overview of the body and discuss various problems that can occur during and after development. We will explore the body when everything works as it should (the ins) and when things do not work (the outs). We will begin with development and work our way through various systems of the body and end with death. During the semester, we will explore the effects of drugs and alcohol on the developing fetus, growth, addictions, mental health topics, cancer, heart problems, blood pressure changes, clues related to death, and many other topics. We will introduce the students to current biological topics and provide some background information on the science related to the topics presented. Our intent is to help the students understand how various treatments and cures bring about a change in the body. In addition, groups will be assigned a topic to research and write a detailed report which will be presented in small group sections.
If you would like more details concerning the course, please contact Dr. Zenephia E. Evans

The Axial Skeleton 5. The Appendicular Skeleton ... 6. Summary The main functions of the skeleton Our body would be a blob of jelly that has no shape if we did not have some kind of framework. The skeleton made up of many different bones covered by muscles and other tissue forms a rigid frame giving the body shape and support. The skeletal system has five main functions they are protection, support, locomotion, storage and manufacturing. Protection Bones are very hard and form bony protective cages around delicate inner structures and vital organs e.g. brain, spinal cord, lungs and heart. The skull encloses the fragile brain protecting it from any injury while the heart and lungs found in the thoracic cavity are protected by the sternum and ribcage. Bony cavities in long bones provide a protective home for the red bone marrow that is responsible for making erythrocytes. Support It forms a framework that gives the body shape, support and rigidity. All softer tissues and voluntary muscles are attached to the bones forming structural components e.g. arm or leg that combine to form a human body. The skeleton also helps keep the soft parts e.g. organs of thoracic and abdominal cavities in position by forming hard boxes around them.

The information is quite advanced but some pages will be quite useful to level 3 students. For example the pages concerning blood include very high quality photomicrographs. The mnemonic I learned was "C. Hopkin's Cafe", which noteably doesn't include Salt or several important metal ions, but I got this long ago from medical doctor rather than a biochemist, so go figure. I'll list the elements in the order of the mnemonic anyway, and follow it with the missing elements. C - Carbon
H - Hydrogen
O - Oxygen
P - Phosphorus
K - Potassium
I - Iodine
N - Nitrogen S - Sulphur Ca - Calcium Fe - Iron Na - Sodium Cl - Chlorine Mg - Magnesium Mn - Manganese Zn - Zinc Others -Trace amounts of Selenium (Se), Cobalt (Co), Chromium (Cr), Copper (Cu) and probably some others. The building blocks of life use these elements as follows: Carbohydrates (sugar, starch, etc.) use carbon (C), hydrogen (H) and oxygen(O), almost equally, and are often abbreviated as "CHO's". Proteins use carbon (C), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), and sulphur (S) for their building blocks, and they are often "decorated" with phosporus (P). Fats are almost entirely carbon (C) and hydrogen (H) with very little oxygen (O). The "Phospho-lipids" that make up the cell walls also contain phosphorus (P) and usually some nitrogen (N).

Nothing is more fascinating than the human body! We all have one, and we're intimately familiar with what it can do. But why and how does it do the things it does? The hands-on investigations in this Exploratorium publication lead to a better understanding of many of the intriguing and mysterious aspects of the body, both macroscopic and microscopic. E-mail: liles@msu.edu An ever-increasing number of people make arrangements to leave their bodies for anatomical study, thereby providing a most unique and caring gift. Such people have rendered a significant service after death to their fellow men and women. Each year nearly 250 men and women begin their medical careers at Michigan State University's two medical schools - the College of Human Medicine and the College of Osteopathic Medicine. The curriculum of each college requires anatomical study of the human body. Without the generous gift of donors to the Department of Anatomy's Willed Body Program, the study of anatomy would not be possible. Act 368 of the Public Acts of Michigan 1978, Article 10, Part 101, authorizes an individual to will his or her body after death to any medical institution. Excerpts from this act are printed on the donor form. The three universities in Michigan that hamedical schools are Michigan State University, University of Michigan, and Wayne State University. All are designated to receive bodies and donations may be made to any of these schools. This pamphlet describes the procedure for willing one's body to Michigan State University for medical education and answers commonly asked questions about donation. It also describes our commitment to the dignity and respect of donors.
