    First Year Human Biology
    Curriculum Course Descriptions Microscopic Anatomy
Lectures and laboratories in microscopic anatomy are designed to provide the principles and concepts of histology, to define the morphological characteristics of the cells, tissues and organs of the human body and to relate this information to functional processes studied in concurrent and subsequent courses. Back to list Gross Anatomy and Embryology Provides a broad understanding of the structural organization of the human body at the macroscopic level to provide a foundation for physical examination and functional assessment of the human organism. Integrates embryological development with study of the cadaver and examination of the normal living body. Concentrates on exploration of body cavities and the viscera they contain. Emphasis on three-dimensional interrelationships and the general principles of blood and nerve supply rather than detailed anatomy of individual organs. Anatomy of the limbs, head and neck is not touched upon. Embryology and general anatomical concepts are presented in lecture format but most learning takes place in the dissecting laboratory and living anatomy exercises, which students prepare and work through. Aims of the course include development of the facility to extract essential information from textbooks, present knowledge in an organized fashion, and manipulate facts in problem solving. Back to list Mechanisms in Cell Physiology Fundamental cellular events underlying the following topics: physiology of the cell membrane including ionic and electrical potential gradients, active transport, excitability and action potentials; biophysics of sensory receptors; neuromuscular transmission; muscle energetics and contractility; spinal reflexes and central synaptic transmission; autonomic nervous system; energy metabolism and temperature regulation; epithelial transport; gastrointestinal motility and secretions.

In this course students will learn to recognize universal attributes of life and the evolutionary processes responsible for the great diversity in life forms. The relationship between structure and function will be examined at different levels. Cellular mechanisms of control and reproduction will be studied, as well as basic genetic principles. The flow of energy and chemicals through the environment and other ecological principles will be investigated. This course will require students to complete an independent scientific research project, to acquire and analyze data using computerized systems, and to communicate effectively using electronic media. This research project is a compulsory component of the Comprehensive Activity (see Science Program description for complete details). Thirty hours of laboratory complement the lecture material. 3 hrs. theory, 2 hrs. lab per wk. 101-BZE-05

Human anatomy or anthropotomy is a special field within anatomy. It studies organs and organ systems of the human body , leaving the study of tissues to histology and cells to cytology. The human body, like the bodies of all animals, is made up of systems, that are made up of organs, that are made up of tissues, that are made up of cells.
Major systems of the human body:
Cardiovascular system: the blood circulation with heart and veins
In anatomy, the circulatory system or cardiovascular system is the system that circulates blood around the body of humans and many other animals. Its main function is to deliver oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body and to remove wastes; it also plays an important role in the immune system defending against infections.

by F P Lisowski (University of Tasmania)
This invaluable manual is intended to guide and facilitate human anatomical dissections. It is flexible enough for use in long as well as short courses, and is thus structured in such a way that the dissection of the body can be completed in 110 to 160 hours. Although some medical schools have reduced the amount of dissection, the North American schools have lengthened their courses. The manual can also be used in those courses where only part of the body is dissected and even in the study of prosected material. It can be particularly useful as a link with real anatomy when used together with computerised-anatomy programs; many curricula emphasise that the student should go back and forth between the body and computer programs. The guide is also useful where students do not dissect but merely look at atlases, prosections and models, by providing a link to real, living and variable anatomy. Nowadays many anatomy courses are aimed solely at systems anatomy. Although important as systems are, regions are clinically vital since many more problems concern damage to several systems because the lesions are regional. This is where the guide is of considerable help.

Why is the human body 98.6 F?
Author: sweet potata Text: Why is the temperature of the human body 98.6 F? Response #: 1 of 1 Author: Dr. Pam Text: This is like asking-why is there life. I cannot answer "why" but I can tell you that in many organisms - BUT NOT ALL - 98.6 F (37 C) is the temperature at which most reactions occur most efficiently. Our enzymes have adapted to that temperature. When a mammal hibernates, their body temperature actually falls and they are much less active. Not only do they appear to be asleep, but they breathe less often and their heart rate is greatly reduced. Some organisms have adapted to other temperatures (mostly the temperature of their surroundings. When their enzymes are isolated and studied in the lab they are found to function most efficiently at the higher (for "thermophiles") or lower (for "psychrophiles") temperatures their cells normally live in.
