The Need for Anatomical Gifts in Medical Education and Research
The study of human anatomy constitutes an indispensible part of medical education and research. There is a continual need for anatomical gifts in the teaching of medical and dental students, postgraduate physicians, nurses, physical therapists, and students in related disciplines
Who May Donate
Any competent person over 18 years of age may donate his or her body for medical education and research.
How One May Donate
The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology requires that a Deed of Disposition be on file in the department prior to the donor's death. The department will provide the legal forms which require only a few items of information, the donor's signature, and the signatures of two witnesses. A brief medical history form must also be completed and returned to the department with the original of the completed Deed of Dispostion. Following receipt of these documents the department will acknowledge acceptance of the deed, review the information, and issue an identification card if the applicant meets the necessary criteria. By law, a medical college may not purchase any human body.
When Death Occurs
At the time of death, the person in charge of the donor's affairs should select and notify a funeral director and make arrangements concerning transportation to Iowa City and any other professional services needed or desired. If desired, visitation and a traditional funeral service may be held prior to the transfer to Iowa City. If there will be a delay of more than eight hours because of a funeral service, distance, weather, et cetera, embalming will be necessary. The cost of transportation and the funeral director's professional service fees must be borne by the family or estate.

When the air temperature, combined with humidity moves the Heat Stress Index (see HSI scale on home page) above 90o , the human body becomes stressed. In order for the core body temperature to be maintained at a safe level, two elements are necessary: 1.) Convection (wind) and 2.) Evaporation (sweating). As the Heat Index rises, the body produce more sweat in order to cool itself. Prolonged exposure drains the body of vital fluids. This lowers the circulatory volume.
Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke can follow if preventative measures are not employed.
Commonly observed signs of heat stress are profuse sweating, rapid breathing rate and rapid heart rate. Because of excessive fluid loss, this disorder gives adequate warning by increasing fatigue, weakness, anxiety, and drenching sweats, leading to circulatory collapse with slow thready pulse; low or imperceptible blood pressure; cold, pale, clammy skin; and disorientation followed by a shock-like unconsciousness.
Exposure to high ambient temperature may lead either to excessive fluid loss and dehypovolemic shock (heat exhaustion) or to failure of heat mechanisms and dangerous hyperpyrexia (heatstroke)

Science - The Human Body
Grade levels are approximate and usually quite flexible. Preschool and Kindergarten: My First Body Book by Melanie and Chris Rice
1995, Dorling Kindersley, 32 pages, hardcover
This is a fun and very kid-friendly introduction to the body and its various functions and capabilities. It begins with a set of transparent overlays which portray the skeleton (skeletal system), the heart, lungs and blood (cardiovascular system), and the brain and nerves and digestive system. When I first got this book (back in the days when I was a DK representative for a short time) I worried that this book wouldn't hold up very well. After more than three years of use by little hands, I have to admit it's done quite well.
The rest of the book provides simple text, funny illustrations and the trademark DK photos covering the following topics: faces, skin and hair, muscles and bones, blood and heart, lungs and breathing, digestion, brain and nerves, eyes and seeing, ears and hearing, taste and smell, touch, growing up and "all about you."
The digestion is handled quite politely (no graphic pictures) and I was pleasantly surprised at how well the "growing up" section was handled. It begins with a very sweet and simple explanation of conception "A baby starts when a tiny sperm from the father joins with an egg inside the mother. The egg attaches itself to a part of the mother called the womb..." (pg. 29) and goes on to descriptions of the various stages of development of an unborn baby. Although the term fetus is mentioned, the baby is called a baby throughout the text!!! Again - no yucky pictures but not twaddly or dumbed-down either.

SUGGESTED MATERIAL (available at KB Books) Study Guide to accompany The Human Body , by Bauman Biology 341 Lecture Note Supplement, by S. Garver COURSE OBJECTIVE The Human Body (Bio. 341) is an upper division, non-majors course designed to meet the G.E. Life Science requirement. It is NOT open to nursing or P.E. majors and students must be in their Junior or Senior year. The class meets for 1 hour 15 minutes two times a week (11:00-12:15 T/Th). This course is designed to guide you through an introductory-level survey of the human body and human disease. The objectives include increasing your awareness of the structure and function of your body and, consequently, improving your understanding of the human experience in health and disease. It is my hope that you will leave the course with an enlightened ability to make more intelligent decisions about maintaining your own health and an improved understanding of current advancements in medical science. COURSE REQUIREMENTS EXAMS There will be four (4) Unit exams and one (1) comprehensive final. Each exam (including the final) is weighted equally at 100 points.

BIOLOGY 2201
Introduction: Biology And The Science Program The word biology means "the study of life" but the emphasis of that study is moving in new directions. "Modern" biology will always incorporate new discoveries and refine its theories. It will continue to reflect the changes in the society that supports its research and the advances in technology that emanate from and support it. It is the intent of this curriculum to expose students to some of the basic principles unique to biology and to help them develop skills specific to the subject. This exposure will add to their collective body of knowledge and their repertoire of abilities which can be applied to the solution of the challenges of the future. What is it that distinguishes the study of biology from the other sciences and why offer it in high school? There are a number of categories of reasons for this venture which include.
1. Biology encompasses a unique body of knowledge, associated with life and its properties, that is not likely to be encountered in other subject areas.
2. Biology can foster an understanding of life and its inherent complexities and interrelationships.
