Nature's little jewels. Hummingbirds are the smallest of North American birds, all with long slender bills adapted for reaching deep into tubular flowers Wingbeat is so rapid it produces a humming sound. All species feed while hovering and can also fly backward. Throat feathes look black when light does not reflect the brilliant iridescent colors. Young birds resemble females; some are difficult to identify. All are fearless and pugnacious, Males have a "pendulum" courting flight with distinctive patterms for some species Migrate by day, flying low. Eggs, 2, are small, white. Few have a song however, most all have a rapid squeaky chipping [or a clicking] sound.

Q. What is the ruby-throated hummingbird's habitat? Ruby-throated hummingbirds can be found in many habitats, from forest to streamside. The one thing they always need is nectar or another very sweet liquid. In early spring they find it at sapsucker drill holesotherwise they are virtually always found near flowering plants.

By flying from flower to flower, the hummingbird pollinates the plants it feeds on. Some plants can only reproduce because of hummingbird pollination. Hummingbirds are a unique part of
Arkansas' fauna, providing enjoyment
to thousands who have sugar water
feeders. Not only are hummingbirds an
important part of our backyard bird
watching, they are a necessary part of
the life cycle of many flowering plants.
Hummingbirds can be attracted to
backyards and apartment balconies by
providing them with nectar rich flowers or sugar water feeders. It is true that hummingbirds are attracted to the color red, but be sure to not color the water...just purchase a red feeder. Three hundred and forty hummingbird species are found around the world, but only nine have been observed in Arkansas. Only one, the ruby-throated hummingbird nests in Arkansas.

Hummingbirds and Butterflies
Updated 8/22/95 Backyards and other small areas may have a limited value when managing for larger species like deer, but they are extremely valuable for many other species. With planning and a little work, these areas can easily be managed to benefit nectar-seekers such as hummingbirds and butterflies. By promoting plant species and habitat components that are beneficial to hummingbirds and butterflies, you can insure their colorful presence. This publication highlights key steps to protect and provide the important habitat areas needed by hummingbirds and butterflies.
Figure 1. A hummingbird. Getting Started It is important to have a soil test done on potential garden sites before beginning to plant. Soil tests are free through the NC Department of Agriculture Soil Testing Lab. Soil test information and interpretive material is available from your Cooperative Extension Service Center. Extension agents can recommend soil amendments and plants adapted to your area. After a site is chosen, sketch out a garden plan. The plan should show the arrangement of flower groups, the location of water sources, basking areas, and if needed, artificial feeder sites. Hummingbirds and butterflies are attracted to sunny areas. Improve shaded garden sites by opening the canopy.

LANDSCAPING FOR HUMMINGBIRDS
If you want to attract Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) , it's not enough to simply hang a feeder filled with sugar water outside your classroom or kitchen window. You must also supply a HABITAT that meets the everyday needs of hummingbirds. An effective habitat will contain water shelter space , and food Natural hummingbird food comes in the form of tiny insects that provide fats and proteins, while plant nectars are the principal source of carbohydrates. Hummingbirds also get some protein from plant pollen that they ingest while sipping nectar. At certain times of the yearespecially as they fatten up for migrationthey may spend most of their time ingesting insects rather than nectar or sugar water.
Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History has all the
attributes needed to attract hummingbirds and other wildlife:
water, shelter, space, and both natural and artificial food.

A male Allen's Hummingbird (top) turns its head (left) and suddenly the observer is dazzled by a flash of spectacular glittering color. Iridescent color among birds is one of nature's wonders, and hummingbirds display a full spectrum. For many species, iridescence is limited to a throat gorget, or a gorget and crown, but on others the entire body is jeweled with waves of color, such as on that Costa Rican endemic, the Coppery-headed Emerald
The beauty, (usually) tiny size, and their ability to hover and fly backwards makes hummingbirds unique. Further, their interdependence on and co-evolution with flowers provide a fascinating correlation and field for study. This Amazilia Hummingbird in the barrens of coastal Peru (below left) has found a patch of red tubular flowers. Because the sources of nectar is constantly changing as flowers bloom and fade, most hummingbirds live solitary lives, aggressively defending nectar sources from rivals. Yet despite the strong pressure to gather nectar rapidly, studies have shown that 70% of a hummer's time is spent doing little else than singing, self-preening, and sunbathing (Schuchmann 1999).
When natural nectar is harder to locate, hummingbirds readily adapt to human-made hummingbird feeders. This vagrant

Gardening With Wildflowers
You will be familiar with some of the wildflowers on this page, and may have used them along with imported flowers in your garden. Others will probably be new to you. They can be grown in beds of one flower type, or in combination with a number of other plants with similar sun, soil and water requirements. Use a mixture of perennials and annuals in your flower beds for added color, contrast and extended bloom time. Do not transplant wildflowers from the fields or woods into your garden. many will not tolerate transplanting and will not survive, whereas others may be protected in your area. You can start plants from seed packets or seeds collected in the wild. However, the easier method is to buy nursery grown stock which will transplant easily.
Once established, wildflower gardens require less maintenance than other garden types. Occasional weeding, deadheading, and watering are all that will be needed.
