Wild, Wonderful Aroids - Part 4 - Arisaema

February 28, 2003
A gardener's love affair with a plant, or genus of plants, is very like that between humans. A first glance can be love at first sight, or a mild interest grows into admiration then fascination; obsession, culminating in long-lasting true love. My relationship with the genus Arisaema has followed the latter course.

Searles Home Page About Searles Searles Products Gardening Tips/ ... ATG Garden Centres HYDRANGEAS - BLUE OR PINK One of the most colourful flowering plants for the home garden are hydrangeas, but did you know you can easily change their flower colour to either pink or blue?
Soil pH
Hydrangea flowers can vary from brilliant pink right through to vibrant blue. The hydrangea flower colour is simply determined by the pH of the soil. That is, the acidity or alkalinity of the soil.
It would be wise to buy a pH test kit to test the pH of your soil. This way, you can monitor the pH as it changes, and you can also easily see how far it needs to change. Soil pH test kits are available from leading gardening outlets.
Blue Hydrangeas
For brilliant blue flowers, hydrangeas need an acidic soil. That is a soil with a low pH of approximately 5 - 5.5. To make the soil acidic, apply Searles® Hydrangea Blue to the soil every 3-4 weeks. Start now for wonderful flowering later in the year.
Pink Hydrangeas
On the other side of the coin, to develop their lovely deep pink flowers, hydrangeas need an alkaline soil, that is a soil with a pH of 7-8. To achieve this, apply some dolomite or lime to the soil every 3-4 months.

    Wildflower Tulips
Wild tulips are less formal and more resilient than larger hybrids
by Becky Heath Wild tulips like 'Apricot Jewel' come back year after year. Listening to some gardeners talk about it, you would think that a genuinely "perennial" tulip is some kind of holy grail. The dream of a tulip that comes back and multiplies has inspired and then eluded many gardeners. Any skepticism you may have is why I hesitate to make the following claim, but here it is: Wild or species tulips are perennials. Under optimal conditions, they will come back year after year and usually increase in numbers. In many cases, gardeners find themselves pulling out some that have strayed too far.

    70. Arkansas Plant Outlet - Gardening Tips
If vegetables are your gardening favorite, this is a good season forplanting. hydrangeas are common plants in the Arkansas landscape.
    http://www.arkansasplantoutlet.com/tips-apr.html
I think we are all ready for these teasing late frosts to disappear for good. We were all led like the lamb to the slaughter with the mild winter weather in late January and early February, and since then we have been waiting for the last shoe to drop. Hopefully, there will be no more late freezes, but we must be aware of the possibility, as we begin our planting. Many of us were not prepared for the late cold snaps that occurred. If you have any late winter damage, give the plants a chance to begin growing, before you start pruning. We had many plants in bloom before the late February freeze that were recovering and then the later snaps occurred. Lets assess the damage and move forward. What was looking like a particularly early spring, got a big set back in late February, and we haven't seen a huge reprieve. Every time it looks like the cool season has passed, another one sneaks in. Buds that were not showing color are still trying to bloom, so don't be too quick to prune out winter damage, until you know for sure. April is a prime month for gardening. If vegetables are your gardening favorite, this is a good season for planting. Not only can you still plant all of the cool season vegetables through mid month–lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, radishes and spinach –but it is time to begin planting the warm season crops as well. Since Easter comes a tad early this year, many gardeners use the "Good Friday" date as the prime date for planting warm season crops –including tomatoes and peppers. If you do plant early, keep mulches handy, and pay attention to the weather forecast, since there is still the remaining chance of frost.

Gaura ranks among the South's hottest plants
It seems no new plant has captured the fancy of gardeners this year like the gaura. From Picayune to the Madison County garden tour and right on up to Oxford and Tupelo, everyone has been admiring the gaura. Gaura is still a new plant to the majority of gardeners, but leaders of garden clubs and horticulture tours are catching on to the enthusiasm for this plant's unique floral display. The gaura, whose uncommon, common-name is bee blossom, is in the family known as Onagraceae. This means that the gaura is related to the Evening-primrose and the Fuchsia. However, the look and texture of the gaura is not even close to these family members. The most cultivated species is Gaura lindheimeri, and it is native to Texas and Louisiana. Gaura is hardy from zone 5 (a few states north of Mississippi) to the Gulf Coast and gives a unique texture in the garden. The butterfly-like flowers are white, pink or deep rose, and they are borne at the top of tall, airy spikes. They will reach 2 1/2 to 4 feet in height.

Hydrangeas by Anne Tofield Thursday, May 23, 2002 Hydrangeas ( Hydrangea macrophylla ) have been in and out of fashion for years. They are now "in" with good reason: they provide a strong, leafy background and anchor a bed with height and structure. Starting now and continuing on into fall, their mass of color injects a welcome punch in the landscape. And, perhaps best of all, when planted correctly in well-drained, fertile soil, they need minimal care. As a newcomer to Tallahassee seven years ago, fresh from the temperate gardens of England, and the tropical Far East before that, I thought north Florida gardens a bit tame. They needed a shot of something different. Imagine my chagrin when I discovered the magical jolt from old fashioned, been-around-forever hydrangeas. Intrigued by a neighbor's river of blue tumbling down a slope, I bought a Hydrangea 'Blue Wave' and, although it was only a marginal success, I was hooked. Sixteen plants later, there is a ripple, if not yet a river, of blues sparked with white. Hydrangeas are large shrubs from three to six feet tall and three to five feet wide. They produce clusters of white, pink or blue flowers, their color depending on the acidic level of the soil. In our acid soil blues are an automatic success. (A tablespoon of aluminum sulfate in a gallon of water intensifies the color). To make a blue flower pink, sprinkle lime and water well. This is tricky as sometimes the result is a splotchy lavender. White flowers, bought that way, stay that way.

Choosing foundation plantings (shrubs, trees, and plants that are planted along your house foundation) is a major decision. Ideally, you want plants that will enhance the beauty of your home, hold up in bad weather, and not grow so quickly that you are constantly out there hacking at them with pruning shears. Answer the following questions and bring them with you when shopping at a garden center to help you make good choices:
What type of sun exposure do I have? (North is shady, east has morning sun, south is sunny all day, and west has afternoon sun.)

    METHODS AND TECHNIQUES
Children's wagons make great traveling miniature gardens - especially in the early spring - for lettuces and radishes. Pulling in and out of the garage for protection from cold nights Sphagnum moss prevents damping off - when starting seeds, sprinkle a light area of your potting box. How to keep those hydrangeas pink or blue: if you want them blue, apply aluminum sulfate or gypsum. If you want them pink, you need more alkaline, wood ashes or limestone. When wrapping gifts, present them with garden touches of berries, leaves, swigs of greenery, dried rosebuds, or pressed flowers. Subtle touches are always remembered. Growing in a bag is easy and effortless, but it doesn't have to look ugly. Hide it in a decorative pot or low window box container and cover with mulch. It'll trick even the best of gardeners. Change your containers seasonally - perhaps even with fresh potting soil.
