It accounted for 7.2 percent of U.S. generation and 76 percent of renewable generation in 2000. It is one of the oldest sources of energy and was used thousands of years ago to turn a paddle wheel for purposes such as grinding grain. Our nation’s first industrial use of hydropower to generate electricity occurred in 1880, when 16 brush-arc lamps were powered using a water turbine at the Wolverine Chair Factory in Grand Rapids, Michigan.   • World-wide, about 20% of all electricity is generated by hydropower. Hydropower provides about 10% of the electricity in the United States. The United States is the second largest producer of hydropower in the world. Canada is number one. Norway produces more than 99% of its electricity with hydropower. New Zealand uses hydropower for 75% of its electricity. In the U.S., hydropower produces enough electricity to serve the needs of 28 million residential customers. This is equal to all the homes in Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, North and South Dakota, Kentucky, and Tennessee. In Wisconsin, hydropower accounts for 4.1% of the electric generating capacity and 4.4% of the total electricity generated. Hydropower production in Wisconsin is about 2.1 billion kilowatt hours (kwh) per year. Based on a home using 8,000 kwh of energy and 2.5 people per home, this is enough energy to supply the residential needs of 650,000 people.

Energy technology and patents
The purpose of patents is to ensure the inventor gets the rightful monetary return for his efforts. However, through the examination process associated with patent applications, they have also been used to keep the technological status quo from advancing. Inventions that claim novel sources of energy which do not fit current theory get into serious trouble in the patent process. Of course there are exceptions, but many very bright inventors in the energy field have a sad story to relate. Energy technology has not advanced significantly for over a hundred years. We are still using the same internal combustion engines in our cars as our grandfathers, burning gasoline and diesel fuel like Otto and Rudolf Diesel, the inventors, in the beginning of the century. Electric motors have remained substantially equal to what was used in times of Faraday and Nikola Tesla, and even nuclear power stations are based on - steam technology(!) to turn the turbines. Windmills have been known for centuries in Holland and elsewhere and maybe the Portuguese of the 17th century were even more efficient than we are now in harnessing the tidal power of the sea. We are insisting on using up the earth's stores of fossil fuels to supply our energy needs. In addition to showing boundless greed on the part of some of our contemporaries, this is a very stupid thing to do as many of you will readily agree. We just do not know what we are causing by such a drastic exploitation of natural resources. What are we leaving to our children and their children?

What is hydropower? Hydropower is utilizing the energy of moving water to produce electricity. Also known as hydroelectric power, it's been used to generate electricity for over 100 years and currently provides about 10% of the country's electricity. Hydropower is important because it is renewable, economical, helps conserve fuel, and is immediately available. Other benefits of hydropower include providing recreation, irrigation, flood control, transportation, and habitat for fish and wildlife. Hydroelectricity generation begins at a dam where the power plant converts the force of falling water from a reservoir or river above the dam into electricity. Water from a reservoir or river flows into a large pipe called a penstock located in the upstream side of the dam structure. The water then flows into the turbines which are inside the powerhouse. The turbine shaft is turned by the force of the water pushing against the turbine blades and generators connected to the turbine's shaft rotate as the turbines move, producing electricity. The same amount of water that entered the dam returns to the river unchanged. Water not used for energy production is released over the spillway. Transformers convert the electricity generated to higher voltage levels for transmission over powerlines. Transmission lines carry the electricity to the substations and on the distribution system where voltage is reduced to levels for your use.

    Electricity generation - whether from fossil fuels, nuclear, renewable fuels, or other sources - is usually based on the fact that: " When magnets are moved near a wire,

    In the picture, the shaft and armature (with copper wire) spin around. The magnets are on the outside (they don't move). Electricity, at the "+" and "-" terminals, is shown in the picture as a lighting bolt.
    A "generator" and "motor" are essentially the same thing: what you call it depends on whether electricity is going into the unit or coming out of it. A generator produces electricity. In a generator, something causes the shaft and armature to spin. An electric current is generated, as shown in the picture (lighting bolt). Lots of things can be used to make a shaft spin - a pinwheel, a crank, a bicycle, a water wheel, a diesel engine, or even a jet engine. They're different sizes but it's the same general idea. It doesn't matter what's used to spin the shaft - the electricity that's produced is the same.

    INEEL solves problems in the areas of nuclear and non-nuclear energy Nuclear Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology (NE)
    • The INEEL has been designated as the NE's lead laboratory in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory . The INEEL is equipped with highly specialized facilities and equipment such as the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR), which provides the INEEL with the ability to conduct experiments under unique nuclear environments. For years, the Naval Reactor Programs and others have capitalized on these resources and continue to rely on them for new developments, including materials testing for the Fusion Program, remote metallographic examinations for irradiation programs, and isotope processing for the Isotope Production and Distribution program. The ATR is a national supplier of essential isotopes to the industrial, medical, and research communities. INEEL currently provides support to NE and the Naval Reactors Program via the ATR and the Test Reactor Area (TRA) Landlord program. Other Nuclear Energy/Naval Reactor programs, such as University Fuels and Irradiation Services are also supported.
