Ice storms suck
musings It's been four years or so since we saw an ice storm as nasty as what hit us here yesterday. The power's been out at home since 20 minutes after 1 PM on Wednesday, and this morning it looked to me like the entire town of Mount Airy was dark, including all the shopping centers and traffic lights. And to make matters worse, falling branches took down about two thirds of my shortwave antenna and have created a huge mess in our back yard. On the other hand, it isn't that incredibly cold here and we can get by on carry out food for a bit longer. And as long as there are Triple-A batteries, there is radio. And the sun's out today and all that nasty ice is turning into more much-needed food for all of the the plants and trees around here that have seen several very dry months. Information Sheet 8 Helping Trees Recover from ice storms This explains some thingsthat can be done soon after the storm to help damaged trees to recover.
http://ceinfo.unh.edu/icestorm.htm
On January 15, 1998, the state received a Disaster Declaration by President Clinton as a result of the storm from January 7-16. Assistance was made available to help New Hampshire communities (with exception of Rockingham County) recover from the damage through two rounds of community grants. A listing of the communities, project focus and total project value is available.
The severe ice storm of January 1998 caused damage to many residential and forest trees in New Hampshire. A map of the ice damage in the state was created using aerial survey data collected by the State of New Hampshire, Division of Forests and Lands and USDA Forest Service.
Although storms of this extent are uncommon, trees are often exposed to severe weather conditions and are remarkably resilient. Trees that have not suffered major structural damage, such as split trunks or broken tops, will likely recover with time. Every tree and woodlot is different so it is important to assess the damage before making long term decisions. Even 3 years later assessments continue on private and community properties. The Ice Storm 98 Revisited takes a look at what affect the ice storm had.

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/lzk/html/ice1200a.htm
I cing is common in Arkansas during the winter. In most cases, there will be a light coating of ice on exposed surfaces, with the ice melting in a day or so. This was not the case in December, 2000...with two major ice storms on the 12 th and 13 th and from the 25 th through the 28 th In the picture: Heavy ice was seen on traffic lights along Camp Robinson Road in North Little Rock on 12/13/2000. Heavy accumulations of ice (in some cases up to 3 inches) made trees and power lines heavy...with massive tree damage noted and over 600,000 people without electricity. In the picture: In the aftermath of the ice storms, many trees across Arkansas were bent due to the weight of the ice. Such was the case about 8 miles south of Paron (Saline County) on 01/20/2001. In Arkansas, forecasting wintry precipitation almost always depends on how deep the cold air is across the state. Arctic high pressure ("H" to left) provides the cold air from the north...but the air is often shallow in Arkansas. Back to Table of Contents http://www.srh.noaa.gov/lzk/html/ice1200a.htm

Local governments, organizations prepare plans for snow, ice storms County primes for winter weather Weather
By DAVID HILL Journal Staff At Lansing's Cargill salt mine, it could be said, winter never stops. "I don't know that we really ramp-up production," said mine manager Bob Supko. Instead, the 210 people at the mine work all year to turn the salt deposits below Cayuga Lake into more than 2 million tons a year of de-icing rock salt, much of it sold to highway departments in New York, Pennsylvania and some surrounding states. But now, early November, is the hinge of the year at the mine, the time of transition from preparation to execution. Within weeks, customers will begin using the product. Their objective was to be prepared by early November. It's the same way across Tompkins County and environs now. The growing season peaked in September; winter and summer battled through October. Now, Halloween pumpkins are shriveling; the brilliant golds and fiery reds of the maples are all but memories now, replaced by decay on the ground and lonely, skeletal fingers of trees reaching skyward, November conceded to what's to come.

75. The Power Of Ice
The massive weight of the icecoupled with the inevitable high windsthat accompany ice stormscan destroy large trees (and antennas).
http://commfaculty.fullerton.edu/woverbeck/ice.htm
The power of ice on a mountaintop... Sometimes natural forces can at once create beauty and cause violent destruction. This photo was taken soon after a major ice storm at the Tehachapi Mountain "antenna farm." All of the trees, antennas and guy cables are covered with a thick layer of ice. The massive weight of the icecoupled with the inevitable high winds that accompany ice stormscan destroy large trees (and antennas).
Wind-driven moisture in low clouds and fog can cause a buildup of several inches of ice on one side of an antenna, tree or building. Aircraft pilots are well acquainted with this effect; they call it rime icing . It can cause disastrous airplane crashesand antenna crashes. Even this handrail on the deck of my cabin has heavy ice on the windward side, but almost none on top. This is NOT the result of a snowstorm
This photo shows why antennas can be destroyed by ice. Note the pipe mast at right. It is less than two inches in diameter, but it has about four inches of ice on the windward side. There is no ice on the other side. The elements of this antenna (the horizontal aluminum tubing) are only about one inch in diameterand utterly incapable of supporting the weight of the ice. (This antenna failed soon after this picture was taken.) The photos below show what happens to antennas in a major ice stormthe sort of storm that occurs six or eight times a year at 7,000 feet elevation in the Tehachapi Mountains.
This is a 15-meter Yagi antenna before a storm arrived...

Please show your support for this site and visit the sponsors Blizzard/Snow And Ice Storms Safety And Preparations You may live in the North where you are used to a fairly regularly scheduled winter season or you might be in the South where snow is a rare event. Either way, you may one day encounter a hazardous situation involving snow or freezing rain. Both can not only be dangerous, but fatal if you are not prepared. Be sure you always have on hand everything on the emergency supply list . Have one in your home and one in your car. You may also want a kit to leave at work and one for your kids at school. Usually there is enough warning that there is snow coming in your area. That is the time to make sure you are prepared for the worst, but don't worry too much. Most of the time snow is harmless. When snow becomes dangerous, these conditions may appear:
  • Over 1 foot of snow falling within 2 hours Snow mixed with rain Freezing rain that comes before or after snow Sudden temperature drops more than 10 degrees within an hour
  • These conditions are especially hard on very young children, senior citizens, and those with critical illnesses. If you are in that category, make sure you are in a safe place before the snow storm. The last thing you would want is to be stuck outside in the cold.

    by Chris and Jesse
Ice storms, also referred to as glaze storms, are more common in the valleys and foothills. Ice storms are caused by general weather patterns. Ice accumulates when supercold rain freezes on contact with surfaces, such as tree branches, that are below the freezing point. This occurs when a winter front passes through an area after ground-level falls below freezing. The type of precipitation depends on the depth of the cold air. At first it is often deep enough for snow but the warm air associated with nearing storms erodes the cold air and the cold air mass gets shallower and shallower. Soon it is no longer snow but rain falling into cold air and the rain droplets freeze into small pellets known as sleet.

    Descriptions:
    Blizzard:

Sustained winds of 40 miles per hour (mph) or more or gusting up to at least 50 mph with heavy falling or blowing snow, persisting for one hour or more, temperatures of ten degrees Fahrenheit or colder and potentially life- threatening traveling conditions. Ice Storms:
Rain which freezes upon impact. Ice coating at least one-fourth inch in thickness is heavy enough to damage trees, overhead wires, and similar objects and to produce widespread power outage. Sleet Storm: Frozen rain drops (ice pellets) which bounce when hitting the ground or other objects. Does not stick to objects, but in accumulated depths of two inches or more, produces hazardous driving conditions. Snow Storm:
A snowfall of fifteen inches or more within 12 to 24 hours extensively disrupting transportation systems and public safety departments' response capability. Secondary Effects:
Hazardous driving conditions due to ice and snow on highways and bridges; loss of power and telephone service when utility lines yield under the weight of ice and snow; emergency services (police, fire, ambulance) unable to respond due to road conditions; emergency needs of remote or isolated residents for food or fuel, as well as feed, water and shelter for livestock.
