    Culture

It takes special people to not just endure but embrace the dark winters, spewing volcanoes, and the isolation that are facts of life in Iceland. Indeed, resilient Icelanders have an utterly sunny outlook, with one of the longest life expectancies and highest standards of living in the world. Ever since the Vikings, Iceland's first inhabitants, set foot on this enchanting island in the 9th century, the people of Iceland have been hard at work successfully making this rugged country a hospitable and overwhelmingly desirable place to live. Iceland floats in the North Atlantic with sparsely populated Greenland as its closest neighbor, 180 miles away. Because of this geographical isolation, the Icelandic way of life borrows much from its major cultural influence, the Vikings. This fairly homogenous gene pool has produced a country full of tall, blonde, blue-eyed peoplean obvious likeness to the sword-wielding Nordic warriors who settled the country.

CULTURE Visitors to Iceland are always surprised by the tremendous vitality of its cultural life. Lovers of the arts and culture are in for a real treat in Reykjavik. Strong Icelandic tradition and international culture thrive side by side to weave a rich tapestry of delights and experiences. On the cultural front there is the choice of symphony orchestra, opera, theaters (there's no language barrier for the frequent musicals), and a colorful variety of other musical events. Alongside home artists, growing numbers of celebrated international performers from all genres are eager to include "cool but hot" Iceland in their tour programs these days. And for a little daytime cultural input, a fine national and international mix is also found at the many visual art museums and galleries. Visual Art Theater Symphony Opera
    Visual Art

Reykjavik and the surrounding area are home to a vast number of art galleries of every size, shape and description. Some are architectural delights, some intimate and cozy; some of them even double as cafes or movie-theater lobbies. And none of them ever stands empty. In fact the output of fine arts and crafts in Iceland far surpasses what the existing galleries and showrooms can handle.
Reykjavik Art Museum comprises the Asmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum, the Kjarval Collection, the Erro Collection, the Architectural Museum and the Reykjavik Art Collection. The Museum is located in three different places in Reykjavik, each with its own characteristics.

Voigt Travel Superimposed on Iceland's rugged terrain is a resilient and independent culture, fashioned over the years by the descendants of the farmers and warriors who fled the tyranny of medieval Scandinavia. Their flight to a new and empty country resulted in the building of sturdy settlements and farms, and the beginning of a rich literary tradition dominated by the sagas - fact-based accounts of struggles, battles, heroics, religion and occupations - which are considered the finest of all Western medieval works. The country has also thrown up some significant contributors to modern literature, with Halldór Laxness, Iceland's best known writer, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1955. Traditional music - usually cowboy songs and tear-jerking lullabies - remains popular, while giddy international success has greeted the Sugarcubes' former lead singer, Björk. Although Iceland is officially Christian, the ancient Norse religion known as Ásatrú is gaining popularity, not only as a novelty but as an officially recognised sect. A sheep farmer revived Ásatrú in the 1970s; it focuses on the natural forces and the harmony of nature represented by the ancient gods. Tourist Information Culture History Myvatn ... Company Profile

Norwegian Viking Ingólfur Arnarson is traditionally considered the first permanent settler; he established his farm at Reykjavík, now the capital. During the next 60 years, other settlers flocked to the island from the Scandinavian countries and the British Isles. In 930 a central organization for the whole island was superimposed on the already existent regional polities in the form of a general legislature called the Althing. "The Culture of Iceland" Introduction

In this chapter students studied the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland. Geologically, Iceland is the world's youngest country. Sitting on top of a fault in the Atlantic Ocean, this island nation is the result of thousands of years of volcanic eruptions. The people who live here have developed a culture as unique as their island home. Lesson Description
Students will browse through a site rich in interesting facts about Iceland and its people. They can also view pictures of Iceland in the summer and winter. After answering questions about Iceland they will prepare a guide for an American who might be assigned to an office in Reykjavik. National Geography Standards:
Standard 4: The geographically informed person knows and understands the physical and human characteristics of places. Standard 10: The geographically informed person knows and understands the characteristics, distribution, and complexity of Earth's cultural mosaics.

The development of the Iceland Genetic Database provides an entry point into considerations of some of the most essential social questions arising from new economic and technological changes in the global environment. On one level, there are very serious issues of privacy, competition, commercialization and individual rights that challenge or extend existing legal codes and social norms in very fundamental ways. On a higher level, the developments in Iceland provide a way to outline how global economic, social and technological trends shape and connect with local resources, needs and policies. This second aspect, that will be the considered here, is crucial exactly because it frames and establishes the lower level concerns as central social issues of the coming decades. Information technologies, both as a process and product, contain embedded social knowledge, and thus represent the construction of new social norms and institutions. However, the construction of such new social structures on the local level is intimately tied broader global trends. As such cases like Iceland demonstrate how information technologies like biotechnology are a mechanism for linking the local and global. This is not to downplay the concerns of rights and access that characterize the majority of local debates around biotechnology and genetics in general. However, focusing on the broader issues helps elaborate on how these more specific issues are defined by and a part of a more basic restructuring of social relationships within an information-driven environment.
