THE CULTURE HOUSE
The building was constructed from 1906 to 1908 and opened to the public in 1909. It was designed by a Danish architect, Johannes Magdahl Nielsen, but built by Icelandic craftsmen. The brainchild of Hannes Hafstein, the first Minister of Icelandic Affairs under Home Rule, the building was intended to house the National Library and the National Archives, but due to lack of suitable premises, the National Museum and Natural History Museum were also temporarily housed there from the beginning. For several decades, the Culture House contained all of Iceland’s principal national treasures. The new name, “The Culture House”, reflects the building’s new and independent role after the library, archives and museums were moved to other premises. The Culture House contains exhibition halls, meeting rooms, a cafeteria and a shop. Theme exhibitions are staged in halls on the first floor and in the attic. Permanent exhibitions on cultural and historical topics are on the second floor and in the space up to the floor above.

Iceland Getting Rave Reviews
AUGUST 2002 Iceland the follow-up to Jim Krusoe's critically acclaimed Los Angeles Times bestseller Blood Lake is steadily gaining critical support nationwide. Most recently, the Sunday, July 28th issue of the Los Angeles Times featured the book as its lead review, with Jeff Turrentine proclaiming "You're left feeling dazzled, even breathless. This is literature at its most audacious and imaginative. . . . Iceland manages to be that rarest of things: a novel of ideas that's unpretentious and great fun to read. Somewhere up in heaven, Donald Barthelme, Joseph Heller and John Gardner are looking down and smiling proudly." And Los Angeles Magazine stated: " Iceland combines an imaginative narrative with a thought-provoking look at how we construct memory from the barest bones of experience." Also, on August 28th, Jim Krusoe will be interviewed on the National Public Radio station KPCC (89.3) in Los Angeles. The rest of the country has taken notice of this Los Angeles writer as well. Iceland has been praised by the Austin Chronicle as a "brilliant black comedy," while Chris Lehmann of the

Iceland moves out into the light as its president goes high tech.
By Alex Gove
From August 1997 issue
Iceland is a nation of contradictions. In a land that reveres culture, supermarkets play heavy metal anthems like Quiet Riot's "Cum on Feel the Noize." In a society where fresh fish is so prized that Icelanders often refuse to eat seafood abroad, a local delicacy is decayed shark, or shark that has been buried in the ground before it is cooked. In this "land of fire and ice," this middle world between the United States and Europe, this country in which Arctic seasons turn night into day and day into night, contradictions are the rule, not the exception. So given that 70 percent of Iceland's exports consist of fish, should it be surprising that Iceland expects to transform itself into a leading power in the software business? Not according to Iceland's president, Ólafur

Iceland The country with the chilly name is rapidly becoming one of Europe's hottest destinations. Much of Iceland's popularity is due to its natural features, which include glaciers, hot springs, geysers, active volcanoes, portentous peaks and vast lava deserts. Apart from an expansive landscape, it also has a rich history, literature and folklore tradition. However, tempering Iceland's appeal is that its prices are the most expensive in Europe. That doesn't mean it can't be visited on a shoestring, but it does mean that budget travellers will have to spend some time under canvas in order to fully appreciate the country without needing to get on intimate terms with their bank manager. Mother Nature pulled out all the stops for Iceland: boiling mud pits, spewing geysers, rumbling volcanoes, thundering waterfalls, steaming lava fields, and towering ice capsall on a tiny island the size of Ohio. It would be easy to assume that Iceland, with all these harsh extremes, would be hellishly inhospitable. The truth is, this bizarre, stark, mostly treeless country is jawdroppingly stunning, and is considered one of the best places in the world to live. How do Icelanders harness all these natural phenomena to their advantage? These industrious direct descendants of the Vikings see opportunity when most would see wasteland. Geothermally heated water is pumped from miles below the earth's surface to provide cheap, pollution-free heat and hot water to much of the population. The country's countless waterfalls provide hydroelectric power. Unpolluted rivers and streams feed the country with fresh fish. And to Icelanders, the 800 hot springs that dot the landscape provide pleasant places to bathe, socialize, and relax.

It's a country like no other, and an example that larger nations would do to well to study. With little crime, there's no need for police to carry guns. A peaceful nation, Iceland finds an army unnecessary. The literacy rate is near 100 percent and most of Iceland's 283,000 inhabitants can speak multiple languages. Icelanders are justifiably proud of what they've done with this explosive terrain. And they're eager to share their country's wealth of natural wondersbubbling mud pits and allwith the rest of the world.

    Alcoholics Anonymous in Iceland
