HISTORY OF USAF IN ICELAND The Navy assumed control of Keflavik Airport on 30 June 1961, renaming it Naval Station (later Naval Air Station) Keflavik. The Air Force, however, remained responsible for the air defense of Iceland. In 1962, MATS relinquished control of AFI to Air Defense Command (ADC) and the 57 FIS transitioned to the F-102A Delta Dagger fighter. After ten years of performing air rescue services, the Navy turned that responsibility over to Detachment (Det.) 14 of the 39th Aerospace Recovery and Rescue Wing (ARRW) in 1971. Later, Det. 14 was reassigned to the 67 Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron (ARRS), a component of the 39 ARRW. In 1973, the 57 FIS replaced their F-102s with F-4C Phantoms. Five years later, E-model F-4s would replace the C-models. Air Defense Command relinquished control of AFI to Tactical Air Command on 1 October 1979. In 930 A.D., the ruling chiefs established a republican constitution and an assembly called the Althingithe oldest parliament in the world. Iceland remained independent until 1262, when Iceland entered into a treaty which established a union with the Norwegian monarchy. It passed to Denmark in the late 14th century when Norway and Denmark were united under the Danish crown. In the early 19th century, national consciousness revived in Iceland. The Althingi had been abolished in 1800 but was reestablished in 1843 as a consultative assembly. In 1874, Denmark granted Iceland home rule in 1874, which again was extended in 1904. The constitution, written in 1874, was revised in 1903, and a minister for Icelandic affairs, residing in Reykjavik, was made responsible to the Althingi. The Act of Union, a 1918 agreement with Denmark, recognized Iceland as a fully sovereign state united with Denmark under a common king. Iceland established its own flag and asked that Denmark represent its foreign affairs and defense interests. German occupation of Denmark in 1940 severed communications between Iceland and Denmark. In May 1940, Iceland was occupied by British military forces. In July 1941, responsibility for Iceland's defense passed to the United States under a U.S. - Icelandic defense agreement. Following a plebiscite, Iceland formally became an independent republic on June 17, 1944.

The first permanent settlers in Iceland were Norsemen from Scandinavia, arriving in the late 9th century, and Celts from the British Isles. The language of Iceland was Old Norse from the outset, but there are traces of Celtic influence in some of the Eddaic poems, in personal and place names and even in the appearance of present-day Icelanders. Iceland is the most sparsely populated country in Europe, with an average of about three inhabitants per square kilometre. Almost four-fifths of the country are uninhabited, the population being limited to a narrow coastal belt, valleys and the lowland plains in the South and Southwest. Government Iceland has a written constitution and is a parliamentary democracy. A president is elected by direct popular vote for a term of four years, with no term limit. Most executive power, however, rests with the Government, which must have majority support of Althingi, the Parliament. Parliamentary elections are held every four years. The government is headed by the Prime Minister. The cabinet stays in power until the next general election or a new government is formed. The ministers sit in Althingi, but if not elected members of parliament they do not have the right to vote. Language Icelandic, the national language, has changed very little from the original tongue spoken by the Norse settlers. Icelandic has two letters of its own, Þ/þ and Ð/ð, which were used in old English. "Þ" is pronounced as "th" in "thing" and "Ð" is pronounced as the "th" in "them". A large percentage of English words derive from Icelandic. English and Danish are widely spoken and understood in Iceland.

Independent since 1 Dec. 1918 Brief History of Iceland The first people known to have inhabited Iceland were Irish monks who settled there in the eight century, but left with the arrival of the pagan Norsemen, who systematically settled Iceland in the period 870-930 AD. Iceland was thus the last European country to be settled. The main source of information about the settlement period in Iceland is the Landnamabok (Book of Settlements), written in the 12th century, which gives a detailed account of the first settlers. According to this book Ingolfur Arnarson was the first settler. He was a chieftain from Norway, arriving in Iceland with his family and dependents in 874. He built his farm in Reykjavik, the site of the present capital. During the next 60 years or so Viking settlers from Scandinavia, bringing some Celtic people with them, spread their homesteads over the habitable areas. Norwegian Viking Ingólfur Arnarson is traditionally considered the first permanent settler; he established his farm at Reykjavík, now the capital. During the next 60 years, other settlers flocked to the island from the Scandinavian countries and the British Isles. In 930 a central organization for the whole island was superimposed on the already existent regional polities in the form of a general legislature called the Althing. Iceland apparently has no prehistory. According to stories written down some 250 years after the event, the country was discovered and settled by Norse people in the Viking Age. The oldest source, Íslendingabók (The Book of the Icelanders), written about 1130, sets the period of settlement at about AD 870–930. The other main source, Landnámabók (The Book of Settlements), of 12th-century origin but known only in later versions, states explicitly that the first permanent settler, Ingólfr Arnarson, came from Norway to Iceland to settle in the year 874. He chose as his homestead a site that he named Reykjavík, which he farmed with his wife, Hallveig Fródadóttir. The Book of Settlements then enumerates more than 400 settlers who sailed with their families, servants, and slaves to Iceland to stake claims to land. Most of the settlers came from Norway, but some came from other Nordic countries and from the Norse Viking Age settlements in the British Isles.
