A "republic" was proclaimed in 1958, but in actuality a series of military strongmen have ruled the country since then, the latest being SADDAM Husayn. Territorial disputes with Iran led to an inconclusive and costly eight-year war (1980-88). In August 1990 Iraq seized Kuwait, but was expelled by US-led, UN coalition forces during January-February 1991. The victors did not occupy Iraq, however, thus allowing the regime to stay in control. Following Kuwait's liberation, the UN Security Council (UNSC) required Iraq to scrap all weapons of mass destruction and long-range missiles and to allow UN verification inspections. UN trade sanctions remain in effect due to incomplete Iraqi compliance with relevant UNSC resolutions. The Geography of Political Control Virginia City, Montana is a small plot of land (the bright red square at the left end of the map of Dakota Territory) which has been the center of many and various conflicts. As the Civil War began in 1861, that land was in Dakota Territory, and the capitol which controlled it was Yankton, D.T., 2,500 miles away by trail. That amounts to no political control at all. In 1915, Al Noyes copied material from a register that has since disappeared. He preserved the lost documents in his history. "We find another matter that is peculiar. On the 4th day of April, 1863, a deed was given by David Thompson, et al., to James D. Doty, all in Idaho Territory. On the Fifth day of April, 1863, a deed was given by John Ault, to Jack Allport, all in Dakota Territory. There must have been some misunderstanding as to what particular portion of the United States they were in." (From Noyes, Alva J. (Al). A History of Southern Montana, State Publishing: Helena, 1915) The cause of that glitch, reported by Noyes, was Lincoln's solution to the lack of his ability to control of the strategic flow of gold from the Oro Fino area of mines on the west side of the Rocky Mountains. The gold was vulnerable to being diverted to the South. There it could support the war efforts of the Confederate States. The gold fields were in Washington Territory on the west of the mountains. Those gold fields in 1862 were seven hundred miles from the capitol, Yakima, Washington Territory. President Lincoln's solution was to slice out the area including the gold fields. This he combined with part of Dakota Territory, including what was to become Virginia City. In April 1863, Congress established Idaho Territory, with the capitol very near the gold, in Lewiston, I.T. Now the gold fields could be controlled by the local Territorial Government in favor of Lincoln's war efforts.

Following the U.S. Geological Survey, the geographic center of an area is defined here as the center of gravity of the surface, or that point on which the surface would balance if it were a plane of uniform thickness. All localities in the following list, therefore, are approximate. No marked or monumented point has been established by any government agency as the geographic center of either the 50 states, the conterminous U.S., or the North American continent. Page 80-83 Paul B. Wilson, Chairman Geography is the study of what places are like as a result of the combination and spatial arrangement of things within and around them. It is the study of the arrangement of things in space in somewhat the same sense that history is the study of the sequence of events in time. Thus, geography is more a point of view than it is a body of facts. Geographers work in business, industry, government, planning and teaching. The tasks of geographers range from determining the optimal location for a new supermarket to doing the biophysical and socioeconomic studies required for urban and regional planning. The Department of Geography offers the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in geography, and a teaching major and minor in geography. The Department is also the home of a multi-disciplinary Master of Science in Rural, Town, and Regional Planning. The bachelor degree program provides a broad liberal education, qualifies graduates for a variety of professional jobs, and prepares the better students for graduate studies in geography, planning or related fields. The Master of Arts program prepares the candidates for a somewhat greater range of employment, including teaching in community and junior colleges, and for doctoral studies in geography or allied disciplines. The Master of Science degree prepares the candidate for employment in planning and related fields, focusing upon smaller communities and sparsely populated rural areas with only small cities, such as Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and the Dakotas. See the graduate catalog for more information on the M.A. and M.S. degrees.

    The Creeping Hot Spots
Students learn about the Mantle Plume Theory, plate tectonics, and Idaho geography by experimenting with a map of Idaho. Objectives:
    • Students will be able to explain the basics of the Mantle Plume Theory.
    • Students will understand that the crust slides over the mantle.
    • Students will be able to name key cities and geologic features of Idaho.
    Duration:
    1 to 2 hours Background:
The theory of plate tectonics explains much of Earth's geology. For example, California's famous San Andreas fault is formed where two tectonic plates come together and slide by each other. The tension that is created along the fault is periodically released, like a rubberband stretched to its breaking point, resulting in earthquakes. Other geologic phenomena require a combination of theories to be explained. For example, events creating the Snake River Plain that stretches across southern Idaho from Oregon to Wyoming cannot be described as easily as the San Andreas fault. A combination of "Rifting," "Basin and Range Faulting," "the Mantle Plume Theory," and Plate Tectonics are required to explain that big crescent. For a concise description of these theories and the likely sequence of events that made the Snake River Plain see pages 2.1 to 2.5. The student activity that follows will require that you understand the basics of these theories.
