LATEST NEWS FROM HAPPY TRAILS March 25 - Following are Martin's notes concerning each of this year's finishing dogs. Bronson The unlikely hero and Iditarod record holder from last year came into Nome in grand style once again. I observed that Bronson, like last year, seemed tireless, had a tendency to veer left and maintained his body weight perfectly. If one would clone a dog, Bronson might be the mold. Inca What a difference a year can make. He was the first dog dropped from the record setting team because of a sore shoulder last year. This year however Inca not only stayed healthy, but set the pace in the Kusko 300, the junior Iditarod and was a major leader in my Iditarod team. Luna always happy, small and portly does not look much like the great leader that she is. No matter how difficult the trail, she seems to glide over it with ease. All the team members get along with her great. Luna also led Nikolai's junior Iditarod team.

is recognized as the "Winningest Musher in the World." His victories include not only the 1,049 mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race in 1993, 1996, and 1998, but also over two dozen first place finishes in races all across Alaska. During the past 20 years, Jeff has logged more than 100,000 miles on a dog sled.
Jeff moved to Alaska in 1975 in search of adventure. He quickly became interested in dog sledding and Alaska huskies, devoting all his spare time and money to building his own team, while developing a construction business. He began racing in 1980. His competitive nature had found a new outlet, and Jeff set his sights ever higher, entering his first Iditarod just one year later. In 1992 he decided to devote his full time and energy to training and racing, setting aside his construction business. He won his first Iditarod the following season. While on a training run in Denali National Park in 1980, Jeff's team became entangled with that of a new volunteer ranger, and thus he met his future wife. Donna Gates came to Denali after finishing her master's degree in Medical Illustration. She and Jeff married in 1983 and began developing their homestead on Goose Lake just south of the park entrance. The King family also includes three daughters

Introduction You know how weird parents can be, right? Well, yours have just announced that the family is going to take a vacation during the school year and you have a chance to decide where. The catch is (you know there's always one with parents) it has to be an educational experience. You know the other kids are trying to figure out how to make a trip to Disneyland educational. This will never get past your parents. You have to come up with a vacation plan that everyone will love. You have to make this good, cause you don't want to end up wandering through a stuffy old museum like last year. You've heard about this sled dog race in Alaska called the Iditarod and wonder if maybe this would be not only a vacation but an adventure your family would never forget.
The Task To convince your parents that Alaska is the best place to go for a vacation, your class is going to learn as much as they can about the race, Alaska, and the people that live there. To add to the fun, the class will act as a TV news team to gather information. There will be 5 groups of reporters. Each one will cover one of the following topics: history, geography, art and culture, math, and science. We will have a live news cast that will be taped for parents who won't be able to make it. History Reporters 1. You will need to know some history of the Iditarod. To help you with this there are several

    Iditarod Dogs Iditarod Course Lengthened
The Associated Press March 1, 2003
Sled dogs running the Iditarod course will have to cover more ground this year — a change that angers animal rights activists. Warm weather in Alaska has forced organizers to alter the Anchorage-to-Nome course to reduce the risk of the dogs falling through thin ice or slipping on melting snow. But that means a race that is usually about 1,100 miles in length is now longer by approximately 70 miles.

Jim Oehlschlaeger's dog Goro died in the 2002 Iditarod. He was a 5 year old male. "The preliminary report released Monday night said the dog suffered a spinal injury in the neck area as the result of a tangle in the gangline. The accident occurred after Oehlschlaeger missed a turn on the trail and was turning the team around. Goro got ahead of the pair of dogs in front of him, became tangled and when the team was being straightened out, he sustained the fatal injury." Cruelty

    Introduction
It's called The Last Great Race on Earth. The Iditarod, a dog-sled race over 1,100 miles of grueling Alaskan terrain, pits man and his dogs against nature. In this WebQuest you will learn what it is like to compete in this incredible race by assuming the roll of a musher in the Iditarod, making all the preparations necessary for the race, registering, training, and finally competing.
    The Tasks
Your task is to complete a diary of your adventures preparing for and running in the Iditarod race. The diary will consist of daily entries beginning today. Prior to the beginning of the race, you will have specific assignments which you will complete and enter into your diary. Once the race begins, you will log on to the internet daily to find out your standing in the race and the events of the day. You will write diary entries about each day of your race culminating with your crossing the finish line.
    Process
This WebQuest will take several weeks to complete. Some of the activities will be completed by you independently, and others will be completed in class. All materials will be placed in your Iditarod Musher's Diary which will be turned in upon completion of the WebQuest.

The Iditarod: The Last Great Race
Alaska's annual Iditarod Dogsled Race is a perfectly "teachable moment." Wise teachers use the race and the many Web sites connected with it to teach geography, math, reading, and language arts. More than that, this annual race can teach students a thing or two about fairness in competition and about the pride and dignity that comes with seeing a job through to its completion. Included: Iditarod activities for use across the grades! Have you considered using the Iditarod as a teaching tool? Are you unfamiliar with all the Iditarod resources available on the World Wide Web? Then you've come to the right place. Below you'll find an avalanche of activities and Web sites that are perfect for teachers to use in bringing the Iditarod to life in their classrooms.
ADD A LATE WINTER SPARK TO YOUR CURRICULUM!
Commemorating a 75-year-old act of heroism, the modern Iditarod Sled Dog Race has been run since Joe Reddington Sr. reawakened interest in 1971. There are many ways to examine the beauty of this historic event, but the best thing about "The Great Race" for teachers is its many connections across the curriculum. What a great way to spark enthusiasm in students who are suffering through the winter doldrums!
