Galapagos Land Iguanas and Their Protection
When Charles Darwin visited Galapagos in 1835, he wrote about the abundance of land iguanas: "I cannot give a more forcible proof of their numbers, than by stating that when we were left at Santiago Island, we could not for some time find a spot free from their burrows on which to pitch our single tent."
Conservation Efforts and Successes
In 1976, wild dogs wiped out the last remaining colonies of land iguanas from Cerro Dragon to Conway Bay on Santa Cruz. Together, the Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS) and the Galapagos National Park Service (GNPS) launched an emergency rescue operation for the 60 or so survivors. Shortly, thereafter, it was discovered that the same destructions was happening on Southern Isabela. Intervention was too late for many populations, but at Cartago Bay, Isabela, 30 more iguanas were rescued. To help reestablish Land Iguana populations, the GNPS and the CDRS began work on a program for iguanas, establishing a breeding Center in Santa Cruz, to recover the populations.
In 1932-33, 70 iguanas were experimentally transferred from Baltra to North Seymour. This was fortunate, because the population on Baltra became extinct following the establishment of a military base on the island during World War II. In 1980 several pairs of iguanas was transferred from North Seymour to the Breeding Center on Santa Cruz with the purpose of recovering the Baltra population. Twelve years later the repatriation started and continues today. The CDRS and the GNPS carry out regular monitoring of this population.

Don't ask me to explain it, because I can't, but I'm fascinated with Iguanas. Maybe it started when I was little. The only 'Mom-approved' pets in our house were fish so I got an aquarium, but since I don't have to ask anyone's permission anymore, I finally decided to get one... So, I walked into the pet store and picked out a healthy, scampering little lizard from all the Iguanas. I spoke to the owner for awhile, bought several books and a hot rock, some prepared food and powdered vitamins and a UVb bulb. I think my experience was fairly typical; I didn't know anything about Iguanas then, except what the owner of the store told me. One thing he did mention is the incredibly high mortality rate among young Iguanas, and it quickly became apparent why. I soon learned that Iguanas are fairly high-strung, high maintenance animals that require some very specific attention to their temperature, diet, housing and stress levels. It was touch-and-go those first few weeks, but I managed to keep the animal alive and before long, it was getting bigger and looked healthy. The older it got, the more settled down it became and I spent the 'Winter of the OJ Trial' trying to learn everything I could about raising a healthy, happy, tame Iguana

Iguanas are NOT easy-care pets! Actually, I have yet to meet an "easy-care" pet of any species, but that's another matter. Fact is, regardless of what pet stores tell you, Giant Green Iguanas become GIANTS. They grow very large (5-6 feet), can be aggressive when adults, and require expensive equipment, time-consuming meal preparation, huge enclosures ... lack of sufficient UVA/UVB lighting (through which the iguana produces vitamin D3, which is necessary for the iguana's liver and kidneys to convert dietary calcium to a usable form); improper diet (too low in calcium, too high in phosphorus, or, alternatively, too high in oxalic acid); or an environment that is too cool (preventing normal digestion and hence, absorption of dietary calcium).

Iguanas have an intimidating appearance but are actually gentle pets.
In captivity iguanas are vegetarians.
Iguanas like to climb.
Iguanas are becoming popular pets. They require little maintenance and actually enjoy human attention. Iguanas can live as long as 15 years and reach 7 feet in length! What to Look For
  • Eyes open, clear, and bright
  • No nasal discharge
  • No abnormal skin discolorations
  • Thock tail
  • Pelvic bone not protruding
  • Light-green belly.
Care and Maintenance
  • You should invest in a very large cage with a perch.
  • Iguanas need proper diet and environment. They should never eat dog food or cat food it's too high in protein. Ask your veterinarian for a specific diet plan.
  • Position basking lights over only part of the cage; otherwise the iguana may get too hot.
  • Handling your iguana daily will help make him calm.

71. The Jamaican Iguana Page
A page dedicated to the conservation of these wonderful lizards. Also has a forum pertaining to all subspecies of iguanas and Iguana breeding, or keeping.
http://www.kingsnake.com/iguana/index.html

The Jamaican Iguana belongs to the subfamily Iguaninae, within the family of Iguanid lizards comprising 31 species. Many of these lizards attain very large body size and all feed predominantly on plants. The genus Cyclura has eight species and is restricted to the northern part of the Caribbean. The Jamaican Iguana is endemic to Jamaica and reaches a body length of up to 150cm. or more, making it the islands largest native land animal. It was believed extinct since a remnant population on Goat Island, off Jamaica's south coast, disappeared in the 1940's. However, a carcass of one was discovered in the Jamaica's Hellshire Hills in 1970. Then in June 1990 a hunter and his dog cornered a male specimen which was brought to Hope Zoo. As a result the Jamaican Iguana Research and Conservation Group was founded. Supported by large numbers of volunteers, some 7500 man hours were spent methodically surveying the forest. Animals heard and seen provided estimates of at least 15 iguanas surviving in the area and the very first photographs of Jamaican iguanas were taken in the wild. The Hellshire Hill's, which represent an outstanding example of unspoilt dry limestone forest, are located west of Kingston, froming a peninisula which measures abou 10 x 15km. The area where most sightings have been made is some 4 kilometers long, much of which forms a steep sided natural crater.

URGENT MESSAGE FOR MOMS AND DADS Think long and hard when your child begs you to buy that cute little six-inch lizard, the one with the intelligent eyes. You know the ones I mean. Those adorable, tiny bright green dragons. My! Aren't they affordable? Let's see, you get a ten-gallon tank, a heat rock, and some lizard litter, and even a little dish! Wow! All for $19.95. You ask the pet store owner what they eat and to your delight you're told you can feed them just about anything. Please do not be taken in by this. It is WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! We have a four year old female iguana named Max. At this writing we are struggling to help her recover from metabolic bone disease caused by poor diet, improper lighting, and being in a cage that was too small. Poor Max and poor us. We thought we were doing a good job of taking care of her. She seemed all right until she ended up with two broken front legs. Please read through the information below, then go to the links I've listed and research for a good long time before you go out a buy that cute little lizard. TEMPERMENT Those who know and care have insisted that these little green wonders be referred to as GIANT GREEN IGUANA. If you are lucky enough to raise one to adult size, they can be anywhere from a modest four feet long to an amazing six feet long and live as long as 20 years. They get quite heavy and their scales can be abrasive enough to scrape your skin. Those tiny little claws become very long and sharp. Iguanas can and will bite! They also use their tails to whip with. I can tell you from experience that a tail whip can raise a mighty welt. An adult iguana bite can inflict enough damage to send you running for the emergency room. I'm not saying that they are mean. Some are very sweet and enjoy being handled, but you better learn how to do it properly. The iguana is a wild creature trying its best to adapt to our ways. You can expect to see many moods from your scalely friend.

Iguana Bone Disease Introduction Cause Symptoms Diagnosis ... Prognosis
Introduction The most common reptile brought to our hospital is the green iguana. The primary reason owners bring in their ill green iguana's is because they have developed a disease called metabolic bone disease (MBD), also known as nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism (NSHP). The cause of this disease is poor husbandry, especially an inadequate diet. Unfortunately, the literature abounds with erroneous information on the precise needs of these creatures. This outdated an incorrect information continues to be propagated by individuals and organizations with good intentions but limited knowledge. Iguanas are not the only reptile that encounters this problem. We find it in many types of lizards, turtles, and tortoises. It does not occur in carnivorous reptiles like snakes and monitor lizards very often because the whole prey they consume provides a proper diet. We have a short Quicktime movie on an Iguana with twitching muscles. You need Quicktime from www.apple.com to view it.
Cause
This disease has many factors that work together in causing this condition. The primary reason iguanas develop this disease is due to a diet too low in calcium. More specifically, the ratio of calcium to phosphorous (usually the phosphorous is too high) in their diets is inadequate to promote growth and sustain normal physiological functions. As a result, they become very ill, and can even succumb to the disease.

Iguana is the common name for a large "New World" lizard. "Iguana" a Spanish word of Indian origin also serves as the scientific name for the family. Iguanas are diurnal. They have distinctive eyelids, external eardrums, dewlaps (throat pouches), each limb has 5 toes with sharp claws allowing them to climb. Unlike most lizards, Iguanas are vegetarians. Marine Iguana (Amblyrhynchus Cristatus
Growing to approximately 3 ft (1 m) in length these sea-going Iguanas exist only in the Galapagos Islands. Living on the black lava shore rocks they have developed into efficient swimmers feeding off shore mostly on marine algae and seaweed. The cold waters of the Galapagos provide both the necessary food for the Marine Iguanas and its most deadly threats. The cold temperatures can immobilize an iguana if it remains in the water too long. Until the arrival of man, Marine Iguanas only threats were that of larger fish and sharks encountered while swimming.
