St. Louis Regional Workforce Development Plan Stratgegy #2
Priority Challenges and Strategies
Advanced Manufacturing Initiative
Education / Policy Focus
Initial Strategic Planning Results Overall purpose of the three-pronged advanced manufacturing initiative
  • To educate teachers, counselors, parents and prospective students regarding the many benefits available from work in the advanced manufacturing field (high demand, good wages and benefits, portability of skills, etc.), and to let them know that these benefits can be achieved through one- and two-years of education after high school.
To identify and remove any public policy/regulatory barriers to increased use of one- and two-year post-secondary educational opportunities.
To get manufacturing companies to accept the plan to increase skilled training in this area and support the educational plan and marketing efforts.
  • Focus of this working group To change the philosophy of career education by means of targeted instructional, administrative, and public policy reforms within the K-12 and post-secondary educational system.
Current relevant activities in region The bi-state St. Louis region has considerable resources available to prepare students for work in the advanced manufacturing field. At least seven public and private institutions with a combined presence in all counties of the region provide two-year degrees and certificates for occupations in the advanced manufacturing sector. A map and listing of these programs is attached. In addition, South County Technical School and North County Technical School (evenings only) provide advanced manufacturing training. A more comprehensive list of existing resources should be compiled for the final version of the advanced manufacturing education / public policy report.

He stated that with the growth in NACS this approach would be short term, a band aid way of solving our problems. Board comment/question: agreed it would be a short term solution; are any other corporations in the State using this concept; schools in Illinois were losing parents who wanted to escape this concept. There were no audience comments. A second hearing will be held on November 4, 2002. Motion to adjourn the hearing by John Hilger; seconded by Donna Duff. Hearing adjourned. Learning on the Fly: On-Line Tutorials Teach It All!
Are you ready to get serious about Office or Hyperstudio? Do you need an overview of the practical aspects of the product? Perhaps you just need a quick refresher on FileMaker Pro for a database you want to create. You may be ready to learn HTML or employ more visuals on a school Web page. On-line tutorials allow you to train yourself or your staff no fees, no long-term commitment, no messy manuals! Included: Free on-line tutorials for Adobe Acrobat, Windows 95, Power Point, JAVA, Photoshop, and many, many more! There are so many computer applications out there that no one can hope to be proficient in all of them. The time will come, however, when you will want to get up to speed on software in a quick, no-nonsense way.
Wizards and manuals have their place but the niche between them can be filled only by tutorials, which offer concise instruction on the capabilities of a product without excessive detail or hand-holding. On-line tutorials are especially invaluable because they offer quick access and easy navigation. They can meet your needs in a short amount of time

Illinois Statewide School Management Alliance ALLIANCE LEGISLATIVE REPORT (92-46) HOUSE ISBE BUDGET PROPOSAL EMERGES A committee in the House of Representatives this week unveiled its budget plan for the Illinois State Board of Education for the coming fiscal year (FY '03). The House Appropriations Elementary and Secondary Education Committee met Tuesday to discuss the ISBE appropriation bill but no vote was taken. The committee will meet again next week to approve an amendment to HB 6159, the bill intended to carry the House budget proposal. Though the entire budget proposal pushed by Governor Ryan will not be put on the table for a vote, elements of his plan is evident in the House amendment. The Governor had proposed to eliminate 20 specific grant programs and roll those funds into the general State aid (GSA) formula (see Alliance Legislative Report 92-44). The plan from the House of Representatives would also eliminate some specific grant programs and significantly reduce others. This is still an early step in the budget process. If approved by the House committee, the full House will debate the proposal on the floor. The Senate may have its own budget proposal as part of a Senate bill. The House, Senate and Governor will negotiate a final budget package, including education spending, later in the spring.
