    Staff:
Our Mission: The Minority Student Academic Center (MSAC), a component of University College, functions primarily to enhance the academic success and retention of minority undergraduates at Illinois State University by offering academic reinforcement in a designated location. The Center works collaboratively with various campus units to provide an array of inter-connected, coordinated academic support programs and services in a supportive, comfortable environment that is welcoming to all students enrolled at the University. Our enthusiastic staff is sensitive to your needs and concerns.
    Beverly Nance,
    Coordinator
In conjunction with fellow University College staff members, I assist in University College efforts to foster student success and retention. As Coordinator of the Minority Student Academic Center, my primary focus is to provide academic support services to assist minority undergraduate students with their academic goals, needs, and concerns. I have been working to assist minority students at Illinois State University since 1986 and welcome the opportunity to meet and become acquainted with students as they begin or continue their education at this institution.

    Additional support:
Sometimes the number of services available to students at a university can seem overwhelming, especially for first-year students. One of the functions of the Minority Student Academic Center is to serve as a resource for students looking for opportunities and services on and off campus. The following links provide information on some of the services available at Illinois State University. Students interested in additional information should consult with a member of the MSAC staff. University College fosters student success and retention by providing comprehensive academic support services and facilitating student transitions. Student Support Services (SSS) provides an array of services for first generation and/or low income students. SSS helps its participants overcome class, social, academic, and cultural barriers to higher education.

Information TRAINING PROGRAMS The RIVER BEND region has made a commitment to developing a job training system that meets the needs of both employers and workers in an increasingly complex economy. The flexibility of various state and federal funding sources allows programs to be designed and implemented in response to these specific needs. The flexible funding package available in Illinois could allow for any reasonable training-related expenses. For example, allowable expenses might include costs of:
    • Designing training curricula
    • Purchasing training materials
    • Recruitment, screening and testing of employees
    • Instructors'/trainers' wages
    • Leasing training facilities
    • Up to 50 percent of a company's total training costs
Working smart is what gives companies an advantage in today's competitive environment. In the RIVER BEND , our employers keep the technical, management, and human relations skills of their workforce up-to-date by using our competent and strong training system. It's the smart choice, and training programs can be made available to provide assistance for each of the various work groups (i.e., office and administration, supervisors and hourly workers) employed. The key to establishing a comprehensive training package is to blend the training programs listed below to meet the specific needs of a particular company.

Alton Community School District 11 is the largest of the eight districts, with 8 elementary schools, two middle schools, an early childhood center, an alternative school, a career center, and a high school. The district also operates one facility devoted entirely to special education. Alton High School, with approximately 2,000 students, occupies a three-building complex. More than 200 different courses are available to students. A comprehensive academic program is aimed at the 55 percent of graduates who continue their education at two and four-year colleges and universities. An extensive business, trade and home economics program complements the academic curriculum. Alton also has six parochial schools, including Marquette Catholic High School, a facility near downtown Alton, with an enrollment of more than 380 students. Eighty-five percent of graduates go on to a college or university. As a result, its curriculum is academically oriented, with a foundation in Christian principles, and contains several advanced placement courses. Other parochial schools in Alton include Alpha Christian Academy, a kindergarten through 12

    Recognize Christian Education leaders.
Receive the Christian Education Sunday Offering.
    Plan new Christian Education ministries.
Watch for the Christian Education Sunday mailing for details.
Christian Education Sunday is a time to celebrate spiritual growth in the local church. Through Christian Education people's lives are transformed as they come to know God through Jesus Christ, learn to love God and choose to lead lives of service to God and to their neighbors. Since the earliest church, teaching and learning have been a fundamental ministry of the community of faith.
This year September 23 is the suggested date for local churches to remember Christian Education. Another date can be chosen by a local church.
An order form for Christian Education Sunday envelopes (to be celebrated on September 23 or another Sunday chosen by the local church) has been mailed to every congregation. This offering supports the work of Christian Education in local congregations, clusters and districts within our conference. This coming year it is the hope that the conference can give small education grants to local churches to develop new education programs or to expand existing programs.
Christian Education Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate the work of the local church and the leaders of Christian Education in the church this fall. We encourage your congregation to find new ways to teach new persons about Jesus Christ so they might become disciples.
