    On-line Searching
Most of the card catalogs for these libraries are searchable through a telnet session to ILLINET On-Line which has over 800 participating Illinois libraries. To reach many of the libraries you must use the "scope code" option within ILLINET On-Line . If you have problems with the number codes, try the letter codes. For many of the libraries not at academic instutions, you may be able to limit the search to the library system, but not the specific library.

About the Illinois Libraries Cooperative Collection Management Program
In 1993, the Cooperative Collection Management Committee (CCMCC) began to develop an integral facet of its statewide library collection support and development strategy - the Plan for Collaborative Collection Management. CCMCC, which includes personnel from the 27 largest libraries in Illinois, was formed in 1984 and is funded by the Illinois Board of Higher Education through the Higher Education Cooperation Act. Collaborative collection management occurs when two or more libraries collaborate on the acquisition and/or maintenance of library materials through sharing of responsibility, expertise, and resources. The Cooperative Collection Management Program's plan began as a response to the serious growing problems facing U.S. libraries today: sky-rocketing costs and declining collections budgets, along with the new revolution in information technology, which provides almost instantaneous access to information in all formats.

The Illinois Library System Directors Organization (ILSDO), a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, was formed to promote the development of libraries and library systems in Illinois and to encourage the improvement of library service to all Illinois residents. As a way of increasing library funding, libraries often solicit funds from the general public, businesses, or foundations. In some cases, donors are permitted to give only to organizations holding IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. For many libraries this means foregoing a gift, as the time, effort, and costs of establishing and maintaining 501(c)(3) status are prohibitive. To help Illinois libraries in their fund raising efforts, ILSDO has created the ILSDO Fund for Illinois Libraries . The purpose of the fund is to enable libraries to receive gifts from individuals or organizations that can only make donations to 501(c)(3) charitable organizations. More than 80 Illinois libraries have already used it to enhance their fund raising activities!
To take advantage of this opportunity, follow these three easy steps.

    Abstract
Hometown Countryside Connection is a Community Information Network that provides Internet access for local library patrons through an LSCA grant awarded by Secretary of State George Ryan and the Illinois State Library. In addition to public Internet access, the central and western Illinois libraries have a leadership role in developing sources of community information on the Internet. Hometown Countryside Connection serves 299,249 citizens in 34 public or district libraries, serving 98 communities in 18 counties. Internet access and community links are available for an area of 2,705 square miles in central and western Illinois.
    Introduction
Hometown Countryside Connection is a Community Information Network that brought Internet access for local library patrons in central and western Illinois. In addition to public Internet access, the local library developed a leadership role in establishing community information resources on the Internet. Community links are tailored to meet the needs of the people in each community. The number of community organizations participating in Hometown Countryside Connection continues to grow as more volunteers are trained in each community.

Charitable Giving to Illinois Public Libraries Things Libraries Should Know About Receiving Charitable Gifts l. The libraries save money. (a) (b) There are no additional state forms to be completed and no annual reporting besides the annual state library report. (c) (d) (e) There is no waiting for approval from the IRS, no filing fees incurred, no annual tax returns, and no separate audits. (a) The donor can direct how the charitable donation is to be used. For example, the donor might instruct the board of trustees to use the charitable donation to purchase computers (of course the library need not agree to accept terms they do not approve). (b) (c) In our experience there are two truths to keep in mind: 1) never use paid, professional fundraising, and 2) your success will depend on locating, recruiting, retaining, and utilizing the type of committed and talented local people who themselves are donors and will encourage others to donate (whether a foundation is used or not).
