FirstSearch enhanced in version 3.1
OCLC recently enhanced the FirstSearch service to include capabilities to e-mail records and to print multiple records without returning to the full record display or the record list screens. The enhancements were automatically enabled for all FirstSearch users when FirstSearch 3.1 was installed May 30, 1995. Users now can e-mail, via the Internet, up to five records at a time to user-specified addresses. The e-mail action appears in the actions list on the record list screen and on the full record screen. Users enter "e" and the list number(s) of the record(s) they wish to e-mail. FirstSearch then prompts users for an e-mail address. In addition to e-mail functionality, OCLC has streamlined the print process for full records. "OCLC has made these improvements in response to suggestions from libraries and end users," said Robert Smith, market analyst, OCLC reference services marketing division. "We are constantly looking for ways to enhance FirstSearch."
FirstSearch goes statewide in Illinois
by Brad Gauder The FirstSearch service is everywhere in Illinoisin every library that is. Through the concerted efforts of the Illinois State Library, the Illinois regional library systems and OCLC, FirstSearch was systematically implemented in libraries throughout the state of Illinois in 1994.

Building the Electronic Library
OCLC member libraries use OCLC services and software to build and operate customized, digital libraries that link their collections and users in a global information network.
Delivering information to the citizens of Illinois
"We are using the tools of technology to support our basic network philosophy," says Bridget L. Lamont, Director, Illinois State Library , Springfield, Illinois, "that every citizen should have ready access to all of Illinois’ library resources, regardless of type of library or geographic location." A series of projects initiated and funded by the Illinois State Library and implemented by the regional multitype library systems will create a single point of access to electronic information—a statewide electronic library.
