Guidelines to Apply for Illinois Teacher Certification
  • Students completing degree requirements in an initial certification program BA-Elem Ed, BA-ECE, BA-Sec, MAT and MA-UT) are entitled to Illinois Certification. Students are strongly encouraged to apply for teacher certification upon completion of their program. Step 1: Complete the Application for Teaching Certificate and return it to the Registrar's Office (Judy Ludwig) during the term in which you plan to graduate. Forms are available in the Registrar's Office. Step 2: Be sure to complete all State of Illinois tests. Step 3: Secure official transcripts from other colleges/universities you have attended outside of Concordia. Ask that these transcripts be sent to you IN A SEALED ENVELOPE. Do not open these copies; they will need to be sent to the regional office. Step 4: The Registrar's Office, after it has completed the final degree audit approximately three weeks after commencement, will send you the signed application with an official Concordia University transcript in a sealed envelope. We will provide you with directions on which regional office to send your application, all official transcripts you have received, and the appropriate fee. The normal processing time for the regional office can be anywhere from 3-6 weeks. However, you can secure a form from the regional office that indicates your certification by entitlement application is on file. This form will normally be sufficient to apply for positions and go through interviews.

    Academics
... Contact Us Early Childhood Education Dominican University has a 75-year tradition of preparing superior teachers to work in public and non-public schools. Ninety-six percent of those completing Dominican's professional education program are employed as teachers during their first year after graduation. Most begin work toward an advanced degree in education within three years after completing their Dominican degree. Early childhood education (birth through third grade teaching) is a dynamic growth field in the teaching profession. In recent years, experts have identified the unique educational needs of young learners, and this has in turn led to the recognition of a certified profession in early childhood education. At Dominican University, the sociology program and the School of Education have worked in close cooperation to create a sociology major with specialization in early childhood education. This sociology curriculum, in conjunction with structured coursework offered by the School of Education, leads to certification by the State of Illinois for teaching in preschools, kindergartens and grades 1-3. With its highly respected School of Education and its very own on-campus Junior Citizens' Center preschool, Dominican University is a recognized center in the field of early childhood education. Students benefit from a solid exposure to the social sciences, including selected courses on family, social psychology and methodology, along with specialized courses in the theory of childhood and early childhood education. Students complete 100 hours of clinical practicum in the Junior Citizens' Center classrooms prior to their semester of student teaching. This demanding field of academic study and practical experience is designed to produce confident and top-quality teachers who are optimally prepared for rewarding careers in the teaching profession.

OH WHAT A TANGLED WEB WE WEAVE.... ALL CURRENT TEACHERS AND STUDENTS TO BE AFFECTED BY CHANGES IN TEACHER CERTIFICATION:"PREDOMINATELY NON-CATEGORICAL"
Near the end of the over 5-hour July 28, 2000, Illinois legislative hearing on special ed certification, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) was forced to distribute a document detailing how its proposed changes in Special Education Teacher Certi-fication would drastically affect CURRENT teachers AND students. Current teachers "should receive the new LBS I designation when they attempt to renew their current certificates" with current categorical endorsements. "But those categorical endorsements should have NO meaning in terms of limiting the disability types [of students] holders of these new certificates may be required to service." So ANY CURRENT special ed teacher could be required to teach ("service") all students with emotional and behavioraldisorders, physical disabilities, autism, mental retardation, learning disabilities, other health impairments, or traumaticbrain injury.

Procedure for Obtaining an Illinois Teacher's Certificate
Applications for certification should be completed and submitted to the CTE in 130 Education during the first four weeks of the semester in which the student intends to graduate (first two weeks of summer session if the student will graduate in August). Certification is not automatic; all students must apply. Failure to apply at the time of graduation could jeopardize a student's eligibility for certification. Application forms and the instruction sheet are available in 130 Education. The Certification Officer will conduct the final credential audit for certification, complete the lower portion of the application and report names of applicants to the Illinois State Board of Education as candidates for certification. Approximately two weeks after the official graduation date, the application, signed and sealed, will be mailed to the student at the address on the application. Enclosed with the application will be instructions for completing the certification process. Generally speaking, graduates should receive their certificates approximately two to four weeks after the official graduation date.
