In this classroom project, small groups of Grade 6 students from Amsterdam
publish reports of their investigations into a number of civilizations,
including Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Ancient China, The
Vikings, The Celts, The Maoris, and The Incas. In addition to the students'
projects, there are links to the web resources which they found useful in
researching their subjects. This is the latest addition to their Social
Studies Web which they created in Spring 1996. Earlier projects include:
family timelines, human origins, creation stories, "geotopia", folk tales and traditions of puppetry around the world.

Click here for info The Inca trail and Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, are names that conjure the ancient history of South America. Add to these the Nazca Indians and Nazca lines, the Chimbu Indians and their great adobe city of Chan Chan, and you begin to understand that this trip is even more that its title suggests. The Andes and the Amazon offer more than history. Remote villages and markets, Lake Titcaca - home to the floating islands of the Uros Indians, the high Altiplano, great canyons and condors, this is the stuff of dreams made real.

HOW THE INCAS WORKED STONE
Inca stonework is famous for its large stones (some over 100 tons), which are fitted so precisely that "a knife cannot be inserted into the joints." An aura of mystery has always hung about the great "walls" at Saqsaywaman and Ollantaytambo (spellings vary). How could the Incas have quarried, dressed, transported, and lifted such huge stones? As usual with such remarkable ancient structures, the overzealous have proposed antigravity devices, stone-softening agents, and similar wild notions. In truth, as J. Protzen relates in the subject article, Inca stonemasonry was surprisingly unsophisticated and yet efficient, although some mysteries remain. Protzen has spent many months in Inca country experimenting with different methods of shaping and fitting the same kinds of stones used by the Incas. He found that quarrying and dressing the stones were not problems at all using the stone hammers found in abundance in the area. Even the precision-fitting of stones was a relatively simple matter. The concave depressions into which new stones were fit were pounded out by trial and error until a snug fit was achieved. Protzen's first-hand experience is impressive and convincing. Certainly he required no radical solutions. An intriguing observation by Protzen is that the cutting marks on some of the stone blocks are very similar to those found on the pyramidion of the unfinished obelisk from Aswan in Egypt. Is this a case of anomalous diffusion of Old World technology or simply independent invention?

A New Ceviche Recipe Has Been Added to the Recipes! Culinary History of Peru Peruvian cuisine is one of the best in South America and it's known not only for its exquisite taste, but also for its variety and ability to incorporate the influence from different times and cultures. The Peruvian cuisine is an important expression of its own culture just as its ceramics, textiles, music and literature. Thanks to Peru's three regions and ocean there are an abundance of markets that can offer a variety of fresh ingredients that satisfy not only the housewife but also the most sophisticated chef. The culinary history of the Peruvian food dates back to the Incas and pre-Incas with its maize, potatoes and spices that later was influenced by the arrival of the Spanish colonies, and throughout the years it incorporated the demands of the different migrations and "mestizajes". Such groups included Chinese, European, African and Japanese immigrants. The Incas...

Machu Picchu
A fortress city of the ancient Incas, in a high saddle between two peaks circa 50 miles (80 km) NW of Cuzco, Peru. The extraordinary pre-Columbian ruin, 5 sq. Miles (18 sq. Km.) of terraced stonework link by 3,000 steps; it was virtually intact when discovered by Hiram Bibghan in 1911.
Machupijchu
prologue
"After almost four hours by train, on one of the most impressive and spectacular stretches in the world, from high, cold early morning plains down to lush vegetation in the frequently suffocating late morning heat, one arrives at the foot of the mountain Machupijchu. Then the eight kilometer road of thirteen zigzag hairpins in an acrobatic bus takes us up the mountain, and one arrives at the hotel. From here, it is only a few steps and the city opens itself. ..."
