India Picture Questions
Previous Photo Beginning Next Photo
WOMAN COOKING: RELIGION / ENVIRONMENT/ WOMEN'S ISSUES
  • What is this woman doing? Where is this scene taking place? (Where is she cooking?)
  • What kind of fuel is she using to cook? Where do you think she got it? What kind of animal does the fuel come from?
  • List other kinds of fuel. Why do you think she is using this fuel source and not another kind?
  • How old does she look?
  • She is actually preparing food to give as an offering to a goddess in a little temple right behind her. Why do you think people who have so little (in material things) would give away some of their food to a god/goddess?
  • Identify people you know who give things away even though they don't own very much. What motivates them?
  • How do people in the U.S.A. cook? Where does our waste, pollution and energy go?
  • Look carefully at the smoke in the picture. What effect do you think burning fuel has on the environment? What other types of pollution are there? Background notes:
This woman is literally squatting by the roadside, right on the sidewalk at a major intersection in Calcutta, inches from the curb.. She is preparing food to give to a goddess, as she does every Tuesday. Her fuel is "cowdung" or the dried cakes made from cow's droppings, which she most likely purchased from a local vendor. This is a primary fuel source for people in less developed countries all over the world. It is often, though not exclusively, the job of younger children to collect the cow dung for market or family use. Although it is unknown whether this woman has formal employment or not, the majority of women in India are un- or underemployed. Their daily lifestyle consists of countless hours of meal preparation. Many people spend 80% of their income on food, and are still malnourished.

    http://solarcooking.org/Solarcooking-in-india-response.htm
The Solar Cooking Archive A Response to Solar Cooking in India I saw Dr. A.Jagadeesh's article in the April 2000 edition of Solar Cooker Review. I have been a regular user of solar box cooker for the past ten years. I reside in the south-west Indian state of Kerala where it rains heavily for many months. Yet my enthusiasm for solar cooking has not been dampened by the rains. I am not in agreement with Dr. Jagadeesh on some of the points he has made. Firstly, he implies that one has to stand in the hot sun to cook food in the solar cooker in the open. The fact is otherwise - one does not have to stand in the hot sun. The green house in the box cooker is what makes it so versatile and leaves you with time to attend to other chores. The second point he makes is "No meal is served without fried curries in South India." "Nobody wants to use two cooking systems, one for frying and another for boiling." This is not true. Most curries are just boiled and you do a final operation of tempering - sputtering herbs like mustard seeds, cumin seeds, dry red chilly

    54. Interview With S. Narayanaswami On Solar Cooking In India
No, they do not know. Does the average solar cooking promoter in Indiaknow this? He may know because one becomes a cooking promoter
    http://solarcooking.org/narayanaswami-interview.htm
The Solar Cooking Archive Interview with S. Narayanaswami March 18th, 2001 S. Narayanaswami recently wrote a truly fine book about solar cooking called Making the Most of Sunshine
A Handbook of Solar Energy for the Common Man.
Click here to see the Table of Contents. Can you tell us a bit about yourself? What position did you hold in Indian government and what were your duties? I joined government service in 1955. In India there is a higher level of bureaucracy in the state and federal governments called the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). This used to be a prestigious service at a time when Government was big and omnipresent. Now with private sector expanding and government shrinking and with increased powers for local administration its importance is on the decline. One just coasts along in that service serving various departments and alternating between the Federal Govt. and the State govt. in one’s career. I rose to the position Chief Secretary to the Government of Kerala State (1987-90) which is the highest administrative level in a State. The Chief Secretary is the secretary to the Council of Ministers, the head of the state bureaucracy and coordinates all administrative action in the State. When and how did you first hear of solar cooking?

This exhibition is now travelling to other venues in the US. It currently is part of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco's commemoration of the 50th anniversary of India's independence from June 28-September 28, 1997.
"Cooking for the Gods" is also scheduled at the Art Gallery at Mt. Holyoke College, Massachusetts, in 1998. Other institutions interested in scheduling this exhibition should contact Valrae Reynolds, Curator at the Newark Museum, for more information. The research coordinator and research associate at The University of Pennsylvania for this project have been Michael W. Meister and Pika Ghosh; the curator at the Newark Museum is Valrae Renolds; the exhibition draws on the Nalin collection in the Newark Museum and on the generous gifts of Dr. David Nalin to the University of Pennsylvania for preparation of the exhibition. Photographs are courtesy of Dr. Nalin. A review of this exhibition by Holland Cotter appeared in The New York Times on June 30, 1996.
