The program is based in Bangalore, the "garden city," capital of the state of Karnataka. It is the seventh largest city in India. As a leader in the development of computer software, Bangalore has become one of the most important economic centers in Asia. Also, because of its agreeable climate and multicultural environment, many Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) are headquartered here. Faculty invited from Mysore University participate in the teaching of seminars and lead discussions on development priorities, ideologies, and the underlying conceptual frameworks within which these debates arise. The links and gaps between the issues of culture and development are identified and put into context, especially through the lens of national culture. In a society as heterogeneous and complex as India's, where a thousand languages and dialects and regional and caste affiliations exist, the exploration of these topics become even more challenging and fascinating.

Country Info India Introduction India General Data India Maps India Culture ... India Time and Date India Culture Back to Top For almost all Indians the family is the most important social unit. There is a strong preference for extended families, consisting of two or more married couples (often of more than a single generation), who share finances and a common kitchen. Marriage is virtually universal, and divorce rare. Almost all marriages are arranged by family elders on the basis of caste, degree of consanguinity, economic status, education (if any), and astrology. Brides traditionally move to their husband's village. Among the elite, however, nonarranged love marriages are increasingly common. there is a clear order of social precedence and influence based on gender, age, and, in the case of a woman, the number of her male children. The senior male typically is the recognized family head, and his wife is the person who regulates the tasks assigned to female family members. Males enjoy higher status than females; boys are often pampered while girls are relatively neglected. This is reflected in significantly different rates of mortality and morbidity between the sexes, allegedly (though reliable statistics are lacking) in occasional female infanticide, and increasingly in the abortion of females following prenatal gender testing. This pattern of preference is largely connected to the institution of dowry, since the family's obligation to provide a suitable dowry to the bride's new family represents a major financial liability. Traditionally, women were expected to treat their husbands as if they were gods, and obedience of wives to husbands remains a strong social norm.

In fact, it was the British, with their great love for preserving and displaying things, who introduced the notion of a museum to India. The first museum to be established was the Indian Museum in Kolkata, which beside the wonderful medieval Hindu sculptures, also has a great collection of early Buddhist art. Today there are well over 500 different kinds of museums in India and though all of them have a special charm to them, the ones in places like

Did you know that Indians have a different perception of time than Westerners? Or that Indians often respond positively to a question by shaking their head in a way that Westerners interpret as 'no'? We have decided to develop a series of articles to help people understand this fantastic culture. Take a look at some of the topics we hope to cover.
An Introduction
Everyone is shaped by their own culture whether they know it or not. Our very thoughts and actions are dependent on our culture. These thoughts and actions are so ingrained that we don’t even think about them until we are confronted with another culture and another way of doing things.

A B ut the social realities of India also suggest a rather grim picture: working conditions for the greater majority of the people are still exceedingly poor, levels of poverty remain very high, and the oppression of women, the poor, and other marginalized groups constitutes the most formidable obstacle to egalitarian aspirations. This is not the India of the Indians in the diaspora, whose idea of their homeland remains bound to ossified conceptions of Indian religion, tradition, and cultural practices. It is also in the diaspora that new art and cultural forms are emerging, and the relation between India and its diasporic offsprings may yet alter our understanding of Indian civilization. It seemed to him that selfishness and foolish notions of prestige blinded the powerful nations of the world. They were madly making most modernized weapons of mass destruction. They would plunge themselves and the whole of humanity in misery. Even in extreme old age, Rajaji tried to prevent this. Rajaji was grieved that freedom did not bring happiness and joy to the people of India; he was unhappy that the greed for money and power was ruining national life. He was the center of a hundred controversies. Different people may find this or that view of Rajaji unacceptable. But there can be no difference of opinion that Rajaji was the most brilliant leader of India in the twentieth century, and one who spoke fearlessly for the weal of India and the World. India: The name evokes vivid images of flowing saris, sounds of crowded streets and the perfume of curry and sandlewood mingling in warm breezes. Sights, sounds and smells hit the senses simultaneously.
Amidst this, one element is constant......people. Over one billion people share a land area equal to the United States east of the Mississippi River. Nowhere on Earth does humanity present itself in such a dizzying, complex burst of cultures, religions and languages. Every aspect of the country presents itself on a massive, exaggerated scale.
Religion Pervades Indian Culture and Society
Despite being a secular democracy, India is one of the few countries on earth in which the social and religious structures that define the nation's identity remain intact. The culture has remained stable for at least 4,000 years despite invasions, persecution, European colonialism and political upheaval. Most of society revolves around religion. Buddhism was founded in northern India in about 500 BC, spread rapidly when emperor Ashoka embraced it, but was gradually reabsorbed into Hinduism. Buddhism waned after the 5th century as

A continuous thread of philosophy runs through the past few millenniums of Kashmir’s history. This is the appreciation of the beauty of the Lord, as manifested in the majesty and beauty of the natural world. Shiva and Shakti have been worshipped here in Kashmir and this Kashmiri Shaivism has been one of the fundamental and significant branches of Hindu religion and philosophy.
Shakti is the manifestation of Shiva as the world around us. It is obvious that the natural beauty of Kashmir’s landscape has influenced the development of this significant philosophy. Abhinav Gupta and other Hindu philosophers have written noteworthy and important works on the philosophy of Aesthetics, which is integral to Kashmir Shaivism.
