    JOINT PRESS STATEMENT
    1. The ASEAN Economic Ministers and the Minister from India held their first consultation in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam on 15 September 2002. The consultation was co-chaired by H.E. Pehin Dato Abdul Rahman Taib, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Brunei Darussalam and H.E. Mr. Murasoli Maran, Minister of Commerce and Industry, India. 2. The Ministers exchanged views on broad aspects of the present global economic climate in general and recent developments in ASEAN and India in particular. They expressed satisfaction with the recent trends in ASEAN-India trade, which grew by 30% from US $ 7.6 billion in 1999 to US $ 9.88 billion in 2001. The Ministers underlined the importance of sustained regional economic cooperation as a means to promote trade and investment flows. 3. Minister Murasoli Maran stated that the Government of India had announced to the Indian Parliament in 2001 that it intended to reduce its peak tariffs rates to the East Asia tariff levels within 3 years. The ASEAN Economic Ministers welcomed the statement bearing in mind the gap between the average Indian tariff and ASEAN’s average tariff. The AEM also welcomed Minister Maran’s expression of intention of having a bilateral RTIA or FTA as a long-term goal of ASEAN-India economic relations.

India's Economic Growth Forecast at 6 Percent in 2002
MANILA, PHILIPPINES (9 April 2002) - India's economy is expected to pick up slightly in 2002, growing by 6 percent compared to 5 percent in 2001, according to a major Asian Development Bank (ADB) report released today. The Asian Development Outlook 2002 (ADO) , an annual publication of the ADB which forecasts economic trends in the region, says that India will profit from the US rebound and the global economic recovery, stimulating export growth and industrial production. In 2003, the economy is likely to grow by 6.5-7 percent. The current account deficit will remain moderate, at about 1 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2002. Inflation should hover around 4 percent. The GDP growth in 2001 is slightly higher than the 4 percent in 2000 but below the 6.5 percent average rate of the previous five years. Agricultural growth was estimated at 5.7 percent in 2001. Yet prospects for sustained improvement depend on investment to ease infrastructure bottlenecks and to modernize the sector.

The main objective of the RETA was to strengthen the capability of selected countries in harmonizing and improving their existing BTS and in analyzing their results. Specifically the RETA assisted countries to develop and conduct, on a pilot basis, improved and harmonized surveys and to use the BTS results for effective monitoring and analyzing short-term economic developments. In keeping with these objectives, the Workshop aimed to help these countries improve the design, execution and comparability of their surveys, extend the coverage to finance and insurance, trade, tourism and business services, and improve the capability to correctly analyze and interpret the survey results for short-term monitoring and forecasting. Furthermore, participants discussed and shared experiences on the progress of the harmonization of BTS as per the conclusions of the first workshop, problems and issues concerning the adaptation of standard BTS to the needs of countries in the Asia Pacific region.

Sanjiv Shankaran The fall in garment export is primarily on account of an economic slowdown in India's most important markets, US and Europe, according to Mr S. Audiseshiah, Executive Director, Council for Leather Exports. CHENNAI, Jan. 29 EXPORT of domestic leather garments has dropped between April and October 2002 following an economic slowdown in the US and western Europe. The fall in garment export is primarily on account of an economic slowdown in India's most important markets, US and Europe, according to Mr S. Audiseshiah, Executive Director, Council for Leather Exports. Elaborating on the fallout of the drop in leather exports, Mr Audiseshiah said, "the fall has put pressure on price. Additionally, importers are reducing their inventory (buyers want delivery in 40 days against the earlier duration of six months). A consequence of the squeeze in inventory is that a large number of exporters have resorted to flying their shipments against using the sea route. Therefore, the cost of exporting one jacket has increased from about 60 cents to $2".
