India History of India It is India's richly layered culture that most attracts travelers. Hindu temples, built to honor gods that were worshipped thousands of years before Christ was born, can be found on almost every street corner. (Hinduism, the world's oldest-surviving religion, and Buddhism, established in the 6th century BC, both came out of India.) The Taj Mahal is not only a monument inspired by love, but also an art treasure from the Mughal period (1526-1738), when Islam was the religion of the ruling class. And the formal architecture of New Delhi's parliament buildings reflects the legacy of the British colonial period, 1818-1947. (Before the advent of British colonialism, India was composed of a number of autonomous kingdoms.) Despite huge and visible problems facing the government, India remains one of the most accessible destinations in the developing world. There aren't many other developing Asian countries that feed themselves without importing food, manufacture high-technology goods with almost no outside assistance, sustain a free and highly vocal press and allow foreigners to travel throughout the country with minimal interference by security officials.

The Indus Valley civilization, India's earliest known civilization (2500-1700 BC), is identified by its interesting culture as well as its artifacts. The strength and basis of Hinduism is attributed to the Vedic culture (about 1500), as well as the origin of the caste system. India has had many different influences throughout its history due to the migration, invasion or expansion of other nations. Some of these nations or people who influenced India include the Mongols (under the direction of Genghis Khan), the Greeks (Alexander the Great), and the British. India was a wealthy country, economically and culturally up until British colonization. Europeans would trade with India for spices or cotton textiles, but when the British colonized the country the economy declined. This was due in part to exploitation and destruction of India's industries and wealth. Eventually, India would be granted its independence again in 1947, after which a slow progression has been seen in its development. More...

BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... INDIA Dating back at least 5000 years, civilization in India has been a rich and complicated mix of peoples and religions. Brahminism, Buddhism, Jain, Hinduism all developed here in a series of kingdoms and empires. The Gupta dynasty ruled over a golden age for north India for about two hundred years (320-544 A.D.). In the 600s, the Indus River Valley was invaded by Arabs, who brought with them Islam, which took hold in northern India. The Sultanate of Delhi was established in 1206. It managed to withstand repeated Mongol invasions and eventually succeeded in bringing together nearly all of India (with the exception of some of the southern states). But the Sultanate of Delhi was weakened by the stresses of internal rebellion, particularly when combined with the attack of Timur Leng (Tamerlane) in 1398. In 1526, Babur established the Moghul empire, whose culture thrived under Akbar the Great. Threats to the Moghul empire from Marathan and Rajput were compounded by the encroaching interests of the European powers, who came to india in 1498 in the person of Vasco de Gama. A decade later, the Portuguese founded a colony at Goa. The Dutch, British, and French all tried to get in on the action but by 1792, the British clearly held the upper hand. In 1803, the Moghuls agreed to a British protectorate and in 1858, the Moghul empire was no more; the government of India became directly subject to the crown. Britain exercised its authority through a viceroy and the British Colonial Office. Finally, Queen Victoria was made Empress of India in 1877. It took seven decades for India to emerge from under British control. In 1947, the British raj was divided into Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan (by 1962, the French and the Portuguese had ceded their remaining Indian possessions). The architect of India's independence was Mahatma Gandhi, who was himself assassinated by a Hindu extremist in 1948. Peace has not reigned in the region since independence. India's most problematic relationship has been with Pakistan, but problems have persisted with the region of Kashmir. Internally, rivalry between Hindus and Muslims, and Sikhs and Hindus, have contributed to turmoil, as have the demands engendered by a huge and growing population. Political assassination resulted in the deaths of both Indira Gandhi in 1984 and her son and successor Rajiv in 1991.

The history of India is shrouded in antiquity. The country has been thought of as a nation of philosophers with a well developed and even idyllic society. Excavation of sites belonging to the Hardpan era show that the people lived in brick houses in towns with excellent drainage. One of the oldest scriptures on the worlds is the four volume Vedas that many regards as the respiratory of the national thoughts that anticipated some of the modern scientific discoveries. Despite formidable barriers in the form of the mighty Himalayas and oceans, India also received a succession of foreigners, many of them carrying swords and guns but nearly all of them stayed on. Out of these Waves of immigration has immerged the composite culture of India and made it a land of unity in diversity. India became a land of change and continuity.

History Of Kerala The name of the state of Kerala has been taken from the word Keralaputra (land of the sons of Cheras), as mentioned in one of the Ashokan edicts dating back to 273-236 BC. Chera was the first large empire that took roots in this state, and continued to use Tamil till 7th century as their administrative language. The Chera power declined in the 10th century AD, after Cholas, the rulers of Tamil Nadu, were successful in overthrowing the dynasty. After the decline of Cholas in the 11th century, gradually political power in the state went into the hands of the Zamorin of Calicut. In 1496, Vasco da Gama became the first European to find a route to India through sea and started a long-time fight for the power in this region between the Portuguese, British, and Dutch.
For a brief period in the middle of 18th century AD, Travancore, with the help of petty kingdoms, tried to control the political power of Kerala. Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan also tried to annexe the areas south of Travancore, but could not fulfill their dream as they were attacked by the British from the east and had to withdraw. After Tipu's first defeat by the British, the Seringpatnam Treaty brought all the captured parts of Kerala directly under the British and Travancore and Kochi became princely states under the British. Kerala became a separate state only in 1956 when new states on the linguistic basis were created in India. Formerly it was a part of Madras state and to carve out a new state the regions of Travancore, Cochin, and Malabar were added into one to be called Kerala.

    Introduction
From the earliest settlements along the Indus River, the Dravidians and later the Aryans spread their settlements deep into the sub-continent. Protected by geographic barriers, the valley inhabitants had limited contact with the outside world. Farmers cultivated cotton and processed it into cloth which became a valuable trade commodity. Their cities were well planned with shops, granaries, extensive sewer systems and protective walls. Two major religions, Buddhism and Hinduism, developed in India and spread throughout Asia. Art served religion well in India. The artists of the area cut unique Buddhist Temples from rocky cliffs with facades and interiors intricately carved to imitate the wooden constructions of the period. From the earliest simple structures to the ornate and imposing later ones, the Hindu Temples must be appreciated as sculpture as well as architecture. Their paintings, particularly from the Gupta dynasty, are classed as some of the finest in history. Back to Top
