Introduction
Programs in social science are designed to provide a general liberal arts education, emphasizing social science-related studies such as psychology, political science, anthropology, and sociology. General social science students concentrate on two or more social science areas. Some social science majors take education courses in order to be certified as teachers. Others use the undergraduate general social science program as preparation for graduate study in particular social science fields such as geography or history, or in professional fields such as business administration and law. Many four-year colleges and universities offer bachelor's degree programs in general social sciences, a few offer master's degree programs, and most community colleges offer two-year programs that can be transferred to a four-year college or university.
Course Work
General social science programs usually include courses in all or most of the following subjects:
  • Anthropology Criminology Economics Geography History Political Science Psychology Sociology
  • Programs usually also require basic courses in physical education, humanities, mathematics, English composition, science, and business. Instruction is by lecture, discussion, readings, research, and report writing. Writing projects are designed to develop basic research and communication skills. Students use computers for research and word processing. Graduation requirements vary. See college catalogs for more information.

IU TO ACCEPT GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES FROM ALL IVY TECH CAMPUSES BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Indiana University and Ivy Tech State College announced today (Nov. 24) that beginning with the second semester of 1997-98, all IU campuses will accept 10 general education courses from all Ivy Tech sites. According to IU President Myles Brand, prior to this new arrangement, IU required a signed articulation agreement between specific IU and Ivy Tech campuses before course work could be transferred. That policy excluded those Ivy Tech campuses that were not within close proximity to an IU campus. "Now," Brand said, "IU will be able to accept the Ivy Tech course work without the requirement of the articulated agreement." He added, "This agreement comes as good news to all Indiana students who wish to continue their higher education, not to mention the benefits it provides our respective institutions. This cooperative effort between IU and Ivy Tech puts the best interest of students first a primary goal of all institutions of higher learning." Ivy Tech State College President Gerald I. Lamkin echoed Brand's sentiments and said, "Ivy Tech State College thanks Indiana University for this historic agreement and President Brand for his leadership in making it a reality. Students, who now will have greater flexibility in pursuing their higher education objectives, will benefit most from this landmark agreement. However, Ivy Tech believes the agreement also serves the best interests of the two institutions, and will help the state of Indiana realize one of its most critical needs increasing participation in higher education."

Composed of equal representation from business/community and education, and additional representatives from the General Assembly, members are appointed for their commitment to improving the state of education in Indiana and as leaders in their respective fields. Meeting on an informal basis in 1998 to begin to focus on critical issues in improving education in Indiana, the Roundtable was formalized through legislation in 1999, now codified at IC 20-1-20.5-1 et seq . The Roundtable was charged with making recommendations concerning education to the Governor, Superintendent of Public Instruction, General Assembly, and Indiana State Board of Education. The Roundtable was given additional responsibilities now set forth in IC 20-10.2 , which include assuming the duties formerly held by the State Standards Task Force. In addition to the expertise of its members, the Roundtable has enlisted the help of nationally renowned experts in an effort to reach the most informed decisions and recommendations.

College of Charleston In the fall of 1996 the Faculty Senate of the College of Charleston established an ad hoc committee to initiate and facilitate a three-year campus wide discussion of General Education requirements. A Web site was created to record the progress of this discussion and to provide links to other relevant information both at the College of Charleston and elsewhere. This web site describes the process of transforming General Education at the College of Charleston and links to other campuses' transformation initiatives . Designed as a resource for members of the College of Charleston community, the site provides information useful to other campus practitioners interested in redesigning their General Education programs. Eastern New Mexico University Recipient of the 1997 Pew Leadership Award, Eastern New Mexico University has established an ongoing strategic planning process in order to address priorities, achieve goals, and monitor objectives on a continuing basis. Dr. Suellen Reed, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Indiana Department of Education, and the Indiana General Assembly have made a renewed commitment to reading achievement that began in 1997. Over the last three years, legislative initiatives and administrative programs have been established to address a wide array of reading and literacy issues. The policy areas that have been addressed include: new academic standards for reading, research-based early intervention programs, replenishment of school library printed materials, diagnostic reading assessments, phonics curriculum guidance, evaluation of beginning elementary teachers reading instruction skills, and increased support for adult education programs.
    1. Reading and Literacy Initiative for a Better Indiana
With the endorsement of 26 statewide reading and education associations, the Indiana General Assembly supported the Indiana Department of Education's 1997 Reading and Literacy Initiative for a Better Indiana by appropriating $14 million for new grant programs. Specifically, these funds were targeted for the Early Intervention Reading Grant program ($8 million), the School Library Printed Materials grant ($4 million), and adequate funding for the state's adult education programs ($2 million).

Around 1980, after spending 30-years as a hard-core condensed-matter-physics researcher (low-temperature physics, electronic properties, superconductivity, magnetism, cryogenics), I hit a pedagogical wall in attempting to convey physics to prospective elementary teachers. After (a) discussions with Arnold Arons and (b) discovering that standard instruction was as ineffective for science as for elementary-education majors, I gradually became involved in a development, dissemination, and research program to improve introductory physics education at the local, state, and national levels. For a summary and complete bibliography of both condensed-matter and educational research see [ VITA-052200.pdf, 48K ]. For publications which are available online, in addition to those listed below, see the SDI lab page."Some of this work has been done in the context of the physics department's General Physics I course, P201, for science (but not physics) majors, enrolling primarily pre-meds and pre-health professionals

The development has consisted in the instruction of introductory physics courses with various innovations emphasizing interactive engagement of students, primarily Socratic Dialogue Inducing (SDI) laboratories. REDCUBE: Research, Development, and Change in Undergraduate Biology Education: A Web Guide for Non-Biologists [pdf, 9/8/99, 377K] Why REDCUBE? Although physics-education research offers mounting evidence for the relative effectiveness of interactive-engagement methods, only a tiny percentage of physics faculty have thus far embraced such strategies. Although no statistics seem to be available, it would appear that the pace of educational reform in biology is more rapid than that in physics. Then too, the work in biology-education research sometimes reflects a deeper understanding of human nature and cognition than is generally found in its physics counterpart. REDCUBE provides physicists and other non-biologists with a web window on the wonderful world of biology-education research and reform. It contains 47 biology-educator profiles; 446 references (including 124 relevant to general science-education reform); and 490 hot-linked URL's on (a) Biology Associations, (b) Biology Teacher's Web Sites, (c) Scientific Societies and Projects (not confined to Biology), (d) Higher Education, (e) Cognitive Science and Psychology, (f) U.S. Government, and (g) Searches and Directories. The references and URL's may be generally useful to teachers and education researchers, and provide some ideas for improving research and hastening reform. Richard R. Hake
