The proclamation addressed the fact that a strong school system is essential to the continued viability of a municipality and produces committed and responsible citizens. The proclamation commended the Board of School Directors, the administration, and the staffs of all six schools in the district "for their commitment to excellence on behalf of their students and the entire community." The proclamation was signed by Ben F. Killian, mayor of the Borough of Aspinwall; Thomas M. Smith, mayor of the Borough of Blawnox; McLaughlin; Jeffrey D. Peck, mayor of the Township of Indiana; Denis J. Meinert, president of the O’Hara Township Council; and Donald C. Schubert, Jr., mayor of the Borough of Sharpsburg. Researcher's Profile
Curriculum Vitae Teaching Activities ... Publications Researcher's Profile I am involved in the following research programmes: ‘Livelihood, Identity and Organisation in Situations of Instability' and ‘Urban Culture and Democracy', a collaborative Enreca project. Both programmes are funded by Danida and the collaborating institutions. My research project concerns Youth Cultures in Third World Cities and is described below:  The main objective is to develop methodologies, gather information and provide new knowledge in the area of the localisation of global cultural flows, and popular culture activities particularly in African urban neighbourhoods. This field is little researched, but of some relevance for the understanding of the organisation of daily life of poor people in the growing urban areas, and for the direction of desired development trends. The focus of the project is the use of popular culture in relation to practices of organisation, mobility, identity and livelihood. The findings will serve to ‘ground' empirically theories of globalisation and cultural flows.

Sandra Conn, IU director of marketing, has won the 1997 Educator of the Year Award from the Indiana Federation of Advertising Agencies (IFAA). Conn won the award for her work as the J. Stewart Riley Professor in the IU School of Journalism, where she introduced integrated marketing communications to the academic curriculum and taught from 1994-96. The award honors an individual who develops and refines innovative methods to encourage students interested in the advertising and marketing professions. R. Keith Michael, retired chair of the Department of Theatre and Drama, has received the Indiana Governor's Arts Award for lifetime achievement as an arts educator. Alcohol and Speech is the title of a monograph written by David Pisoni, psychology, and Steven B. Chin, assistant scientist in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the IU School of Medicine. Because many different disciplines have contributed to the body of research on the effects of alcohol on speech, the book attempts to account for the relevant literature on the subject since the beginning of the 20th century.
