Professional Resources Support Services News Last Updated: Thu, Apr 18, 2002 INDIANA FAMILY PROJECT TO RECEIVE CITIZENS FOR COMMUNITY JUSTICE’S HAINES TURNER AWARD The Indiana Family Project, a program co-sponsored by the Center for Human Growth and the Center for Adolescent and Family Studies at the Indiana University School of Education and the Monroe Circuit Court and Probation Department, was recently selected to receive the Citizens for Community Justice’s Haines Turner Award. Each year, Citizens for Community Justice, Inc., recognizes individuals, groups, or businesses for significant contributions to restorative justice and the well being of children and youth in the Monroe County community. The Haines Turner award recognizes individuals, groups, or businesses who have made significant contributions to and have a breadth of concern for the development and practice of justice that heals and restores in the Monroe County community. Award recipients must have demonstrated in their lifetime or in the previous year exceptional commitment to work with institutions and for individuals that further the principles of healing and restorative justice. The IFP partnership is designed to assist adolescents and their families struggling with problems of conduct, drug use/abuse and delinquency. The free, pilot program features Functional Family Therapy interventions conducted by doctoral level counselors in training supervised by a licensed psychologist, in affiliation with the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology in the School of Education. The program staff provides confidential, professional family-based counseling services at the Monroe County Community Corrections office and at the Center for Human Growth.

History... Like most medical schools in the country, a Department of Family Medicine was essentially non-existent at Indiana University until February 1970. At that time a committee was appointed to study the feasibility of a Family Practice Program. In January 1971, A. Alan Fischer, M.D., a nationally-known family physician, was appointed director of the Family Practice Residency Program and was assigned the task of developing the School of Medicine’s first Residency. Indiana University's Kelley School of Business today (March 10) announced that one of Indiana's most successful business families, the Johnson family of Columbus, Ind., has committed to giving the school a minimum of $1 million to further the programs of its Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The family's new investment of $100,000 each year for a minimum of 10 years will establish the Johnson Family Fund, designed to propel the Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation to increased levels of performance and achievement, and will support faculty research, sponsor visiting scholars and sustain outreach programs. "We appreciate the Johnson family's continuing strong support of the center," said Elizabeth Gatewood, director of the Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. "This commitment not only benefits our entrepreneurship programs, but also the future of Indiana's business growth. Entrepreneurial development will be critical as the state focuses on the Life Science Initiatives." In 1957, with $500 in the bank, a small loan from their local bank and an insatiable appetite for success, Dick and Ruth Johnson saw a business opportunity and pursued it. Johnson Oil Co. began as a small distributorship of Shell Oil petroleum products, delivering fuel oils, gasoline and lubricants in the Columbus, Ind., area. Rick Johnson joined the company in 1981 after graduating from IU with a degree in business.
