Home IMPACT OF THE CANAL ERA ON INDIANA GEOGRAPHY
George Washington felt that canals offered the young nation the best hope of linking its regions into a united country. Although he never traveled to Indiana, he was a surveyor and always had a keen interest in geography and canals. He was the first to suggest that a canal might be built to connect the waters of the St. Lawrence via the Great Lakes with those of the Mississippi river. The connective passage for this link was a seven mile area between the Maumee river and the Little river at Fort Wayne. This historic "Glorious Gate" was used by Native Americans and the early French voyagers. In southeastern Indiana the Whitewater river, which flows into the Ohio near Cincinnati, also offered a natural route for taking goods to market. The problem there was the "white water." The rapids in the river made it largely unnavigable to commercial boat traffic. Canals offered the answer to a cheap, reliable transportation system and were built to open the Indiana frontier. With pick and shovel the natural geography could be modified to provide a manmade waterway that would be accessible almost year round. Canals allowed boats to go more than one direction. Goods could flow to eastern markets via Lake Erie and the Erie Canal of New York. Manufactured goods could be brought back to the growing state. Compared with railroads, canals could be built with native materials and the cash expended locally instead of flowing to outside interests or even out of the country. In the case of railroads, both the steam engines and the rails had to be imported.

Indiana: Geography Northern Indiana is a glaciated lake area, separated by the Wabash River from the central agricultural plain, which is rich with deep glacial drift. The southern portion of the state is a succession of bottomlands interspersed with knolls and ridges, gorges and valleys. Limestone caves, such as the big Wyandotte Cave, and mineral springs, as at French Lick and West Baden Springs, are found there. The unglaciated soil is shallow in S Indiana, and the cutting of timber has caused erosion, but there is still extensive farming. The capital and largest city is Indianapolis , in the central part of the state. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, with a 3-mi (4.8-km) frontage on Lake Michigan, is noted for its beautiful shifting sand dunes. Formerly a state park, the area was made a National Lakeshore in 1966. Four years earlier, in 1962, the U.S. Congress authorized the establishment of the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in S Indiana. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the site of the famous 500-mi (800-km) auto race, held annually.

Martinsville High School senior Kellie Packwood happily rattled off her favorite "ancient" video games: Tetris, the Zelda games, Mario Brothers. "I grew up on video games," the 18-year-old said. She also calls herself a TV addict. Sound like a typical teenager? Well, so far. Packwood gets just as excited talking about "Final Fantasy" on PlayStation 2 as she does talking about the capitals of different countries and the spelling of words such as "mnemonic." "It's not work to her. She likes learning for its own sake," said her mother, Sherrie Packwood of Martinsville. And Kellie Packwood's current challenges besides those on GameCube prove that.
