WHAT WE DO 1. ISIS K-12 Classroom Programming
We want to encourage you to take advantage of the diverse range of international studies programming opportunities that ISIS offers K-12 educators. ISIS programs are available, free-of-charge, to K-12 teachers, in Indiana or any states, whose schools have access to IAV technology. We even pay for the connection charges.
ISIS presenters include Indiana University international students, both graduate and undergraduate, visiting scholars, academic specialists, and world area study centers' outreach staff. Each is selected for his or her special expertise regarding a requested program topic.
ISIS topics can address a wide range of curricular subjects, including current events. Topics can be as general as "The Daily Culture of India" and as specific as "The Effects of the Rainforest Biome on the Local Culture."
Tailored programs originate with the teacher, who contacts us to request the development of an interactive video (IAV) program focusing on a particular curriculum topic. The relevant IU world area studies center identifies a presenter(s) and the ISIS Programs Coordinator trains her or him in the best use of the IAV equipment and assists in the design of the program. The final product is negotiated among the teacher, the presenter, and the ISIS Coordinator. Each "event" is scheduled for a broadcast time which fits both the teacher's and the presenter's schedules.

70. Marion Indiana | General Overview
malls and movie theatres, factories, schools, parks and the Indians in the State ofIndiana during the named for the Revolutionary War general, Francis Marion
http://www.marion-in.com/general_overview/
Introduction Marion, Indiana is a midwestern city like most others - tree-lined streets with tidy lawns, shopping malls and movie theatres, factories, schools, parks and playgrounds. Every morning thousands of men and women hurry to jobs - teachers, factory workers, doctors, shopkeepers. Likewise, their children head off to school, aspiring to be computer programmers and artists, teachers and homemakers. But there’s something very different about Marion. Perhaps it’s the rich history of patriotism and prosperity. Or maybe it’s the unparalleled excellence in the arts. It could be the presence of outstanding universities and technical colleges. Or a tenacious drive for success in athletics. More likely, it is the arch of courage and determination that connects Marion’s heritage of innovation and diversity to its vision of the future, made strong by a keystone of community pride. History of Marion Grant County was dedicated in 1831 to the honor of Captain Samuel Grant and Moses Grant, both killed in an Indian Battle in 1789, the same year that George Washington was inaugurated as the first president of the United States.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATES 2003
This page will be updated as information is released from the State House.
Please check this page regularly 03/10/03 Update Budget Clears House "The House of Representatives passed a new two-year budget proposal to the Senate last week on a 51-49 vote along party lines. As expected, the proposal tapped several funding resources including the pension stabilization fund, tobacco settlement savings, and additional gaming taxes. To accomplish increased funding for education, spending for Medicaid and corrections was curtailed. The House budget placed a priority on funding education for both K-12 and the state's universities. Specifically, the House restored the cuts in each campus' operating appropriations imposed for this biennium through the Governor's Deficit Management Plan and prior legislative action. In addition, for those campuses that experience growing enrollments, the budget allocates one half of the requested growth formula amount in Fiscal Year 2004, and an additional 25 percent in Fiscal Year 2005..."

Finds Strength in (automated) Numbers
The Alexandria (Indiana) School Corporation has successfully completed in May 2000 the year’s general assessment tests for all its first through fifth graders in record-breaking time thanks to their new electronic testing system made possible by Test Pilot from ClearLearning. "We were frustrated by the time it took to administer, score and record our paper exams the previous year," stated Diana Haggerty, Title I Coordinator for the Alexandria Community School Corporation. "We’ve calculated that the district was able to redirect more than 600 staff hours back into educating our students by converting to Test Pilot." The new system was a big hit with students, teachers, parents, and administrators. The district now plans to expand its use to high school assessments and other forms of progress testing. Too Laborious The Alexandria Community School Corporation contains three elementary schools with a total of 850 students. "In previous years, grading by hand was horrendous," commented Ms. Haggerty. "It took all 10 of the Title I teaching staff approximately a full month to score and record the end of the year assessments." Additionally, classroom teachers needed student achievement results more quickly in order to plan remedial interventions. The Indiana State Auditors also expressed concern about the validity of test results since so many people had been involved in the scoring and reporting process. To ensure greater accuracy, the Auditors suggested that the district incorporate a procedure with more quality control.

Charter Schools: Indiana
Pathways Home Page Contents Indiana does not have a charter school law, although there has been legislative interest. (For many years, Indiana schools have been able to appeal to the State Board of Education for the waiver of rules. Each year, a modest number of schools make this request; they usually ask for relief from the 180-day instructional requirement in order to give teachers time for professional development.) In 1995, Indiana passed the "freeway school" bill, a further opportunity for school districts and private and public schools to propose the waiver of state laws and regulations contingent upon the improvement of attendance, academic performance, and graduation rates. Freeway schools are schools or school corporations that have applied to the State Board of Education for freeway school status, which allows them to break free of bureaucratic red tape that binds locally controlled schools in Indiana. In exchange, these schools agree to be acountable for student performance (as measured by the ISTEP+ or other locally developed standardized test). Currently, there are about 10 freeway schools, several of which were private schools that voluntarily came under the power of the state in applying for freeway school status. Indiana's attempt to pass charter school legislation failed in January 1997. The legislation would have allowed local school boards to establish charter schools as public schools within the school corporation that the school board governs. The bill limited the number of charter schools to 60. It gave priority to those schools serving at-risk students and required that 16 of the charter schools would be designed to increase educational opportunities for at-risk students.
