Keywords: digital libraries, collection development The New Zealand Digital Library project has developed the Greenstone software suite to create and maintain multimedia, multi-language, multi-site digital libraries (Witten et al., 1999). We view a digital library as a grouping of collections, where each collection is a set of like documents. Collections may differ radically in their search interface, document format, degree and type of available cataloguing metadata, search engine, and so forth. In all collections the documents themselves may be widely physically distributed across the Internet, yet the collection is presented to the digital library user with a single, unified interface. The Greenstone software also supports the indexing of each word in the full document text, as well as providing indexing on document metadata (if present). This paper describes the construction of a particular collection with the Greenstone softwarethe Indigenous Peoples collection ( http://www.nzdl.org

Pakiwaitara : A visually arresting and wonderful "Story Index" of 20 Maori storytelling sites; 19 of them offer one tale each, many told by Hana Weka in evocative, powerful prose (several of the others are nicely illustrated with photos of geological features "explained" by their myths). Near the bottom of the list is "Legends from Rotorua": if you click on this one, you'll access 12 more tales at a site called "Maori Memories, Legend and Folklore." For yet one more additional tale, look near the top of the list for "How the Kiwi Lost His Wings" (a great little tale! to save the trees, which were being killed by bugs, the little kiwi sacrificed his wings in order to remain grounded forever, eating the bugs): if you click on this tale and read to the bottom, its homepage link will give you access to yet one more story, "Te Houtaewa," about a swift running trickster. Note : see under "COMMON THEMES: Earth Goddesses" for direct links to three of Hana Weka's narratives about the Earth-Mother and her offspring; and "COMMON THEMES: Sky Gods" for Hana Weka's re-telling of the "forgotten brother" who stayed with his Sky-God father.

You could spend a long time exploring the many pages here. http://indy4.fdl.cc.mn.us/~isk/art/art_can.html This site from the late Paula Geise looks at First Nations' art and artists, including wonderful material on Norval Morrisseau and Daphne Odjig . Geise brought a depth of knowledge and passion to her work, especially when she wrote of stolen native art. Unfortunately, many links are broken and have not been updated since her death some years ago, but there is still much of great value here. (I have pulled a handful of her links at random and annotated them below....much more remains on her site, however.)

    IX Readings on Indigenous Peoples,
    Ethnic Conflict
and the Nation-State A. Indigenous People The first question we need to address is who are "indigenous peoples"? The question is of more than academic interest. With a new political awareness, indigenous peoples are asserting their political rights as well as their rights over their traditional physical and economic resources that have, for the most part, been denied them. Consequently it is important to define to whom such rights should extend. The following selections all address the issue of indigenous identity. Reading 1. Who Are the Worlds Indigenous Peoples?

Stephen Renard, Jaime Simmermaker, and Amy Stein provide an excellent discussion of the issues involved in the human and political rights of indigenous peoples. They also provide you with an excellent outline of what different organizations are doing about the problem, and supply links to those organizations. Reading 3.
