Individual Schools
Every elementary and middle school in District 51 has at least 1 half-time G/T teacher. Each school develops its own philosophy when deciding how that teacher will use their time. Variations include:
  • traditional cooperative learning groups ability grouping independent study pull-out study groups
Identification of gifted and talented students begins at 3rd grade. Because District 51 has a "School of Choice" policy, the opportunity exists to transfer your child to a school with a different philosophy toward teaching gifted and talented students. However, learning which schools offer what is very difficult. There is no School District document that provides such a list. And a school's philosophy may vary from one grade to another, and from one academic year to another. For example, there might be ability grouping in math for 3rd graders and language arts for 5th graders. Each middle school offers a different range of advanced classes, as does each high school. The chart below shows the honors classes offered for 9th graders at all four high schools as of September, 2002.

Schools face shorter Ofsted inspections
Malicious allegations feared if pupils have more say
EducationGuardian.co.uk

Rebecca Smithers, education correspondent
Tuesday September 11, 2001
The Guardian

Schools in England face the prospect of much shorter Ofsted inspections, it emerged yesterday, as part of a shake-up of the system proposed by the government's education watchdog. But plans to dispense with the "gradings" awarded to individual teachers for their classroom performance, which were welcomed by teachers' leaders, were overshadowed by fears that giving pupils and their parents a bigger role in inspections might trigger a flood of malicious allegations. As part of a wider review on the future arrangements for school inspection from 2003, the Office for Standards in Education yesterday began a three month consultation on 16 proposals for change. A report proposed three models for the future of inspection - retaining the status quo of a mix of long and short inspections, with more of the latter over time; a three tier system of short, extended and full visits; or a flexible structure tailored to individual schools.

Chicago Public Schools
National Design Competition

Chicago, Illinois A coalition of educational reform organizations came together with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) to host a national design competition to build two new public schools in Chicago. Two pre K-8th grade schools were the subject of this competition. The goal of the Design Competition was to produce a high-quality design with innovative and architecturally-significant new buildings, while at the same time spotlighting the importance of good school design.
The schools were designed to serve an integrated population of students with and without disabilities. The schools were to be designed with universal design principles and solutions for creative ways of containing small schools within larger school buildings. The site for this new school was left over land, located on busy Elston Avenue adjacent to an industrial park, a large retail parking lot and near the old site of Riverview Park, a long gone amusement park on Chicago's North Side.
Our design focuses on creating an ecosystem for the children and the school's neighborhood. Our design places the individual "small schools" above a "main street" that houses all of the public functions. All three small elementary schools are located on the second floor, recreating the intimacy of "living above the store." Each small school has its own wing of the building and its own special entryway and ramp, extending up from the main street. The individual small schools are identical in footprint and core requirements, but each of the classrooms can be configured in many different ways.

Guidelines for Use of Name by Individual Schools and Units
Introduction The name "Tufts University" and how it is used affects both the institution as a whole and the individual members of the University community. Appropriate use of the name and insignias can benefit all, while inappropriate use may reflect negatively on both the institution and its individual members. Because of these far-reaching implications, oversight regarding the use of the University's name and insignias, and the names of individual schools within the University, will be conducted on an institutional level according to the principles and guidelines outlined in this policy. The Office for Technology and Industry Collaboration (OTIC) is responsible for protecting and licensing the University's intellectual property. Because the Tufts name and the names of many of our schools are registered trademarks, OTIC will coordinate all requests for use of the Tufts name. OTIC is located in the Office of the Associate Provost for Research at 75 Kneeland Street, Suite 401, on the Boston Campus and at Ballou Hall, first floor, on the Medford Campus. The Executive Vice President is the individual responsible for making final decisions on use of the Tufts name and insignias, including the names of individual units of the University.
